WITH MALICE TOWARDS NONE: AN EDITORIAL Tiil Commentator has had a long and •mpestuous history here at Yeshiva College. : has come to grips with many complex, philo- phic problems such ns synthesis, Zionism and uti-Semitism and has dealt with more mundane latters such as Yeshiva ' s scholarship policies nd th e athletic teams. There has been but one ■uly significant area of discussion that The Commentator has never really editorialized rongly about. Whether this silence was due to intimida- on by administration officials or simply a fear lat Yeshiva ' s name would be dragged down, e know not. We feel that we are responsible ) the student body in presenting their views, and that any continuation of our silence would violate the sacred trust placed in us by the student body. We arc saying what we feel to be extremely important not to hurt any administrator ' s feel- ings nor to damage the reputation of the school which we love so dearly. We arc fully cognizant of the sensitivity of Yeshiva ' s position in the community, but we feel the time has come for us to remove our kid gloves and come down to basic issues. We realize that there may be threats of reprisal and discussion of censorship of The Commentator, but we are not to be dissuaded. Our job has never been more difficult than it is now, but our conscience cannot rest whet we see what is happening at Yeshiva. There ha been a call to duty, and this is our response. This editorial actually began last Decembe when two sociology students undertook a com prehensive survey to determine the behavior oJ Yeshiva students with respect to ethical practice; during examinations, dating, and religion? liefs. Of the 269 students who were approached 148 attend the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Thcologi cal Seminary, 91 are students of Teachers In stitutc, and 30 are enrolled in the Jewish Shidie: Program. Some ideas are expressed by con- cepts—the ethical and spiritual values of the Torah. Some, by sentences— an aesthetic communication or a rational analysis. Others, by symbols— notations through which we transmit our under- standing of natural phenomena. The three serve to guide the student in his decision — how to use the ideas he has received. To the Class of 1963: The underlying philosophy of education at Yeshiva College is to provide its stu- dents with the knowledge which will deep- en their dedication to the observance of our traditional laws and customs while giving them at the same time a broad humanistic education which will make them fully aware and prepared for the realities of modern life. As you leave these hallowed halls of learnings of Yeshiva College, you take with you the blessings and best wishes of the faculty and administration, and their hope and trust that the education you received here will serve as a guiding light on your path throughout life. It is my personal hope that all your endeavors will ever be within the framework of our Torah and that from it you will draw the strength that will lead you to success. I wish each and every one of you who is graduating with the class of 1963, farewell— in the sense that you may truly Rabbi Jerry Hochbaum Assistant Director of Admissions fare well. Dr. Isaac Bacon ADMINISTRATION To the Class of 1963: As you take leave of Yeshiva College, I offer you my sincerest best wishes for every success in the years ahead. You have earned the approbation of your teachers and their firm conviction that you will continue to grow in faith and knowledge. You are fortunate, indeed, in having attended Yeshiva College. Here you re- ceived an unparalleled foundation in the arts, sciences and Jewish studies as a foundation for the future and for further intellectual and spiritual development. For at no other institution in the country are the rich treasures of Judaism and western civilization perpetuated in one program. This unique education invests you with a special responsibility— to carry on the quest for knowledge and the study of Torah for the benefit of unending per- sonal growth. In this way, you best serve G-d and your fellow man. Men, like institutions, must forever develop their resources if they are to with- stand the pressures of modern life. For the Jew in America, this means a constant return to those sources of inspiration which have sustained our people through thousands of years. Only through the un- ceasing study of Torah and the carrying forward of our sacred traditions can we maintain our identity in a world where shifting values indicate a lack of moral purpose. One of our great sages has writ- ten, It is the way of the wise to call themselves students all the days of their life. In the 20th century, this is true as never before. May you be granted the blessings of life, peace, and understanding. Sincerely yours, Samuel Belkin President RABBI ISAAC ELCHANAN THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY Dr. Hyman B.
