It is only with this synthesis that we con exist in our turbulent world of changing values. At YULA we achieve this synthesis by becoming involved in a combined program of Torch and general studies. Not only do we learn the subjects necessary to prepare us for college and careers in the modern world, but we can approach our futures with the moral foundation we obtain from the teachings of Judaism, Synthesis is not an ephemeral ideal, but a tangible reality. At YULA we see fine models of this synthesis in our Rabbis and instructors, the successful product of a Yeshivo and college education. In this yearbook, we have endeavored to highlight tlie dual nature of our program illustrating the compatible coexistence of both our worlds. .fx m as n nn : ■' i . iD ' HTi o n ' ' 3a nannttn o ' Tio ' ' 7n niv o ' non tdod otto nya .13 my?? ? no n Dio c ' jnn ' ?! We wish him health, happiness, and continued success in all his endeavors. UrLiq UILL- iquMLiL The Senior Class Of 1981 Rabbi Moshe Meiselman Dean of Academic Studies The The end of the senior year nnarks Q major turning point in one ' s life. As you, the second graduating class of YULA High School, close the door on your years of adolescence and emerge into the adult world, we are confident that the many years of preparation in the day school system of Los Angeles will equip you to meet the twentieth century as mature, in- telligent Jews. The philosophy of YULA High is that a firm foundation in limud ha torah is the only way that a young Jew becomes equipped to deal with the realities of modern life. Our sages taught us 1f a man will tell you there is wisdom among the nations of the world, believe him. If He tells you that there is Torah among the nations of the world, do not believe him. The only source that a Jew has for his values, for his ethics and for his world-view is the Torah. It is that solid learning of the classic sources of our tradition that will continue to inspire you for your entire lives. It is therefore important for you to view the learning of Torah not only as port of the schooling of your adoles- cence, but also as a continuing and necessary part of your life as a Jewish adult. During your lives you may learn much wisdom in many schools and universities, but it is only the continual learning of Torah that will inspire you to live your lives as well-integrated Jews and complete human beings. Rabbi Moshe Meiselman Rabbi Herbert Hexter School Principal Dear Graduates, The Mishna in Pirkei Avoth says on three things, the world stands: on To- rah, on Avodah, (Prayer) and on Ge- miluth Chasodim (Kindness). Based on this, I can proudly say that you, the Seniors of 574 M 981, hove contributed to the establishment of the world. You have set an example for all of your fellow students in areas, not only ' Bein Adam Lemakome but ,., , also Bein Adam Lechovero. Your diligence and depth of Torah learning, as well as your devotion in davenina have served to set the standard at Y.U.L.A. High Schools. Most of all we have seen how you ' ve practiced loving kindness to your fellow Jews in your weekly Mitzvah Missions to the Nursing Homes as well as how you ' ve extended your helping hand to the less privileged students in Vancouver, British Columbia. We are extremely proud of our first boys ' graduating class as well The depth of Torah learning which has been attained and the appreciation of knowl- edge in general, has been demonstrated by so many of our students having decided to pursue their studies in Israel. May you continue on the path that you ' re on so that you will continue to bring Nachas to your parents and teachers. The challenges ahead are many but by continuing to learn and to practice honesty and kindness in our confused world, you will be perpetuating that whi ch the Torch teaches. Hotzlocha Rabba Rabbi Herbert Hexter t ' ' ' b- (. Dr. Bruce Powell General Studies Principal June 18, 1981 Dear Graduates, During the senior year, one often spends a great deal of tinne pondering tl e notions of endings and beginnings, Both ideas are exciting to the point of exhilirotion and very scary. On the one hand, you are culnninating twelve years of hard worl , discipline, set hours, and the close attention of your teachers and principals. You are bidding farev eil, in a sense, to a warm, closely-knit world, a world of securi- ty, open doors, and clear directions. On the other hand, and most importantly, you are offi- cially ending the safe environment of child- hood and entering an adult world where, all of a sudden, you become legally, morally, and socially responsible for making crucial choices and decisions for life. You must now apply the skills, knowledge and disciplines developed during the past twelve years to aid in analyzing various options. The most strenuous challenge will come in the making of moral choices. No longer will there exist a simple black and white moral scheme. The myriad shades of ethical decision making will tax your countf ° commitment to the extreme. In essence, the choices you make from now on really Even though it is important to ponder future responsibilities and past achievements you must not lose sight of your present existence. Be aware of the future and past, but plan to live right now I he future and past are inexorably composed of every action you do at the present time tssentially, the past and future is the present. Concentrate your energies in absorbing the magnifi- cence of G-d s world. Sensitize yourselves to the intricate and mystifying relationship between mankind and nature. Enjoy the very act of breathing, seeing, smelling, and touching. Don ' t miss out on your present life experiences by living in the future or past. By losing the now there will be no other chance to relive it in another dimension of time. Finally, in thinking about beginnings and endings, and about the time dimension in which you plan to live, remember the line from Shakespeare ' s play, Hamlet, where Polonius advised his son Laertes: This above all- to thine one self be true; And it must follow, as the night the day. Thou canst not then be false to any man. Since I cannot improve on the Bard ' s advice, I shall end as he did, Farewell: my blessing season this in thee. c , : :tr Sincerely, Bruce J. There ore programs geared for those with fine Jewish backgrounds, and for those with linnited backgrounds. Additionally, there is a Kollel for young scholars who hove come to Los Angeles to serve on the staff of YULA and to pursue their own studies The Weisenthal Center for Holocaust Studies, affiliated with Yeshiva University, is the first major Holocaust cen- ter in the United States, Those involved in the center study, research, and analyze every possible aspect of the tragic holocaust in order to enlighten the public about this catastrophic event in human history YULA has also established Operation Outreach , a program designed to bring non-religious students on various college campuses closer to their heritage In addition to these schools of higher learning, there is also the Kollel Bais Avrohom, a branch of the Lake- wood Kollel, where men devote their time to Torah study. The Kollel offers classes to the community at large, as well as providing a setting for individual learn- ing The Orthodox educational institutions affilated with the Bureau of Jewish Education, are among the finest in the country. The elementary schools include Hillel He- brew Academy, Yavneh Hebrew Academy, Emek, Se- phardic Hebrew Academy, Yeshiva Ohr Elchanan, and Yeshivath Rav Isaacson (Toras Ernes), Secondary schools, including Yeshiva University High School (for- mally Rambom Torah Institute), Valley Torah Center, Yeshiva Gedolah, Bois Yaakov, and high school pro- grams of the Sephardic Academy and Ohr Elchanan have produced many fine scholars who hove contin- ued in the field of education The growth of the Orthodox community has brought about an abundance of kosher butchers, bakeries, groceries, restaurants, and caterers There ore also several mikvooth and shotnez laboratories, things that no Jewish community can be without Los Angeles also has a lorge number of Jewish ceme- taries and several Chevrot Kaddishot which involve dedicate d individuals who assume the responsibility of caring for the deceased until burial The Rabbinical Council of California was established to assist in any problems that may arise in the community There is also a Koshrut department of the RCC that supervises various products and businesses Los Angeles also has a large Sephardic community with its members coming from Turkey, Greece, Moroc- co, Spain, Iraq Iran, India, and many other Eastern European Countries, Their fascinating culture is an ad- ded richness to our Jewish community. The Los Angeles Jewish community has grown from a handful of Jewish inhabitants in 1841 to a thriving Jew- ish metropolis of over 700,000, making Los Angeles the second largest Jewish community In the United States B ' ezrat Hashem, we will continue to grow and to strengthen the bonds of Yiddishkeit throughout the city My Neighborhood When the Jewish population moved westward from Boyle Heights in the nineteen forties, the Fairfax area became the center of Jewish community life in Los Angeles This neighborhood is one of the few places in the United States where Jews can feel the true sense of tradition The shops of Fairfax accommodate the community with all the kosher and religious articles needed to maintain an observant life. On Erev Shabbot, the bak- eries and markets are teeming with people anxious to make their lost minute purchases before the Sabbath arrives Young Chosidim, eager to perform the mitzvot of the Torah, urge male passers-by to put on tefilin, while young women with covered heads distribute small brass candleholders to encourage Jewish wom- en to light Sabbath candles Israeli music con be heard from the outdoor loud speakers of the Jewish record store, and wishes for a good and peaceful Shobbat fill the air After the preparations for the day have subsided, it is at last time to relax and enjoy the upcoming Sabbath, My family watches as first my mother lights the Sab- bath candles, followed by my sister and me As we look onto the street through the large picture window in our dining room, we see families, groups of men in striemels , and young boys with pais and over- sized kippos hurriedly making their way to Friday even- ing services As my father rushes out to join them, he is soon engrossed in a discussion with the rabbis concern- ing various commentaries on the week ' s Torah portion The girls in my family bustle about our house, making last minute additions to the table setting Fresh flowers are placed on the table ' s center, along with salt for the chollah and the kiddish wine. When my father ar- rives home, the family sits down to enjoy the evening meal. After kiddish is recited, we watch through our window as the men walk briskly homeward to their families who ore eagerly awaiting their arrival. Watch- ing the members of our community, faithfully keeping the Sabbath, we understand the essence of Judaism individuals worshipping G-d, forming community united in religion and the observance of customs and tradi- tions that have been passed down throughout the centuries. ,oyD ijtVtjv. iotdq .u .-ddr q ' dj!- ij- ' j- ' d i; ■• --D nViya a ' ni nyD in .rT oT : i-ioor. 1 n;:iD-i ,np ■!:nn,-j ,yTj toV o 3mn ,b nb .D -ipirT mvi:;po2 ,DT2K rT n DT Ol ' jTpO D- -|0 1Kn C- C3!; !-• . l ' - KDm 2 Z ' 7. Is the answer I ' m seeking, too hard to find? How can I know what G-d wants me to be? How can I tell what ' s expected of me? Where can I go for guidance and aid to help me correct the errors I ' ve made? The answer is found in doing three things and great is the gladness that doing them brings.
