On. flu? if-Zbeafh ofa jriencL The shot rang out, Piercing the sizzling air, Hitting my friend. He leaned over, My friend, For he had felt the pain. And a second, And then a third shot rang out. And the third Hit my friend. He fell, My friend, lnto the arms of his sobbing wife. And then, He was no more. They placed him in a casket, My friend, And they bore him to a waiting plane. He said nothing. He lay still, for My friend Was no more. They bore him to his house, My friend, They placed him there to rest. We saw my friend there, Lying in the casket, Wfith a bullet hole through his head. We saw him there, And wept, for our friend Was no more. They bore him from his home And placed him under the dome Of the place where he had worked. They draped a flag over his casket, My friends, They placed an honor guard near him. His friends came to him then- To watch, to grieve. They came to respect him, To pray for him,'for my Fallen friend, For he was no more. His wife, his sorrowing wife, Came to him Under that dome. And she brought to him his two small children. They said good-bye to My friend, ludith Rosner 26 And they prayed for him, For he was no more. And they bore his casket down the stairs, And they placed it on the horse drawn caisson. And the bands played, And the mtrfiled drums boomed, And the soldiers marched, To honor My friend On his last journey- His last journey, For he was no more. They prayed over him, The priests, The bishops, The Cardinal. They prayed for his final rest. They prayed that he might enter Paradise My friend, For his life upon this earth Was no more. And they bore him farther yet, My friend, And they placed him on the ground. They saluted him, They praised him, They prayed for his rest. Bur what good are salutes, What good is praise, lf he for whom these are meant, Hears no more? And they placed him in the ground, And they covered him with earth, And he was gone- Gone, never again to be seen by me, His friend, Never again to be seen by His wife, i His son, His daughter, We who loved him. I shall see him no more For he is no more: My friend is dead.
