A Crack by Noemi Lowinger Time is change, Change is timeless. . . Was it just yesterday? Had that agony pervaded her being so short a time ago? A day ago when her heart was full of misgiving, full of fears of the unknown? No, it was four days ago to be exact. She had entered the room through a crack in the wall. Behind her was a haze, fearful and meaningless. In front was an even more dreadful sight. Tremendous, awesome and commanding creatures covered the scene, Lest they catch sight of her and devour her, she made herself as small as possible. The whole of that first day was spent in avoiding these beings, these entities with eyes that dared you to disobey. Suddenly it was night. It was morning. The second day. The end of the begin- ning, She had advanced from her secluded snare, unnoticed by the giants or even by herself. Another had taken her place, had she given but a glance she would have seen a gap in place of the faint cracks And yet the third day. She had begun to denote a glint of kindness in those eyes. In herself she perceived a growth. Wings? Perhaps a soaring of the spirits to greater heights? A look back would have shown a narrow window. Wisps of sunshine and light would beckon to her. But her eyes were turned only to this strange, small world. The fourth and final day! At last! Lo-upon emerging on this day, she had become one of those monsters. Fear not, she hadn't claws nor scales. Instead she felt and seemed ethereal, exquisite and heavenly. -A heady, airy feeling was about her. Now in fact she smiled at her previous imaginings. The crack was a wide open door. The view outside, the clearest and loveliest she had ever seen. Pro'udly and with confidence she strode through the open gate. , Was it just yesterday? Time had passed so quickly, yet she realized it was four days ago. With the passing of time many subtle changes had occurred. A frightened young-girl with few ideas about the world had entered in her stead. I left, the essential key in my hand. Now she knew. This wasn't the only crack she would encounter. In fact, she herself would have to make the crack many times in many a solid wall. One thought, however, loomed the largest-These four days I will never forget. . .

eUeI'l'l'LOI'e by Adele Lieberman I delve into obscurity Deep down into the abyss of darkness The chasm raises its sturdy hands Yearning to grasp me. I AM LOST. A heavy darkness engulfs me Its black amorphous mass Slowly absorbs my zvhole being Its long icy fingers clutch at my lzeart. I AM FAINT. A deep Silence! Tranquility resounds Throughout my living tomb. My mind is oblivious to all Except my odious foe Clad in nocturnal garb. I AM ALONE. A heavy sleep preys upon my eyelids. Soon all will be over. And as you step and climb and shove You grope and slip and slide And all that gold so polished bright Goes down in dusty pride. Oh, but you will never learn The world is hard and bleak But yet you strive and stretch your arms To try and reach the peak.
