It pierces my very soul and my heart bleeds. Fear. Cold beads materialize and then disappear, leaving me chilled. I am alone. Ira-he is dead now. They hauled him off one night and played a game with him. They fired. He was their target. Miriam-she is gone too. They starved her and beat her until she melted in convulsing pain. My father, my mother-members of the long parade that slowly marched. Animals to their slaughter, sensing in every step the nearing fumes of death. Heavy chains lacerated their mortal flesh. Muzzled like dogs. Abomination. I will fool them. I will not let them throw me into their ovens and laugh as I turn to floating ash. I will not be tortured. I will not be killed. I will not die, a toy of their ugly game, a plaything of their inane pleasure. Oh, please help me. I must escape. I must leave this infernal hell-hole. I must once more breathe air that is fresh and alive. Air that is not putrid with the rancid fumes of death. I have the pass. I know what to answer. My name is as one of theirs now. My clothes are as theirs are. My speech has been assimilated. How dirty I feel dressed in the garb of scum, how repulsive, But this shall not last! Once I escape, my soul shall be cleansed by freedom. No longer will I wear the yellow badge of shame. I will wear a bright badge of pride that will glisten as I walk and radiate with the brilliance of self-respect. The wire fence is near now. Like the deadly thorns of a desert plant its lethal claws protrude. The sentry paces back and forth with a hard, conditioned gait. His steps are short, direct, equal, precise. I hate him. I hate them all! My eyes brim with anger and its violent offspring reach my lips in moist, briny droplets. He de- mands the pass. Oh, be with me now. . . The next morning the mangled body of a I5 year old girl was found. They played their game of darts and one more was added to their pile of human flesh. The body of the toy lies dead, but the soul is rising upwards. . . The heavens seem happy now. Their beauty is embellished by a strange antici- pation. The milky-white clouds spread their fluffy arms in welcome. The smiling sun beams down on the little soul with caressing warmth. On earth she was tred upon and stepped on. On earth she was hated and shamed. But here the little soul knows it will be different. Here the little soul knows she will be loved ....

eUeI'l'l'LOI'e by Adele Lieberman I delve into obscurity Deep down into the abyss of darkness The chasm raises its sturdy hands Yearning to grasp me. I AM LOST. A heavy darkness engulfs me Its black amorphous mass Slowly absorbs my zvhole being Its long icy fingers clutch at my lzeart. I AM FAINT. A deep Silence! Tranquility resounds Throughout my living tomb. My mind is oblivious to all Except my odious foe Clad in nocturnal garb. I AM ALONE. A heavy sleep preys upon my eyelids. Soon all will be over. Thou hast conquered. Murderer! -Black asassin of KNOWLEDGE, Slayer of THOUGHT and MIND, Take me. I AM WORTHLESS. ime by Rivy Halberstam Time for whate Iust give Me the time you'll see what can be done . tick rick tick But time flies by no time to do What... Oh anything Anything can be done with time for doing it Then . . . The void, vast, vacuum BooM, CraSh, ba.Ng . . . and I, left alone have time to do- nothing. Quest My search of life has been profound. Adventures on this earthy ground Have led me on to many ways Nestled within me to this day To serve as food for thought. The seven seas of sin did I Travel throughout the years And now I cry from above the hills With words of hellish seraphic will: Climb Climb Climb Climb higher higher higher Until you reach the golden heights Then unto depths of fire. And as you step and climb and shove You grope and slip and slide And all that gold so polished bright Goes down in dusty pride. Oh, but you will never learn The world is hard and bleak But yet you strive and stretch your arms To try and reach the peak. So wander on my roving star Roam near, roam far, and high But with you take my pondered words The world,s for YOU to hndf' ,. X.':j,,g'.- ins: V '55 Q-ff? A, - -emi. I ' all
