And then again I heard the voices. Reason commanded that I go. The heart warned me to disobey. I watched those eyes. They were there to lead me to the abyss. No. I would not go. Those eyes intensified my fear. I spoke. You have seen me through both good and bad. How sad to'see the truth within your eyes. What pain to find I cannot go. Yes, Go. You will be hid among the crowd. No one there will notice that you don't belong. No, You will be hid among the crowd. But you alone will feel you don't be- Iong. I was not ready. I could not go. I knew so little when there was so much to know. They would not let me stay and learn. They wished to cast me out so soon and unaware. They ruthlessly willed to see me go. I could not face them. l would not leave. I knew I was not ready. Those eyes bore witness to the truth. And then I heard THEM speak. My child, take heed of reason which bids you go. You will find your way within the crowd. No one there will feel the absence of that knowledge which you fear is lacking in yourself. Your heart has warned you right. You will be alone amid the crowd. For there are few who realize the futileness of that which they know compared with that which they need to learn. Your heart has only sought to spare your feelings. Go out and face the world. And never cease to learn. At times when confronted with the haughtiness of the world remember to return and gaze into our eyes to view the true replica of yourself. But above all, when alone, remember your replica has been placed in the most cherished part of man. Strive to retain that posi- tion. And you shall succeed. That night I feared no more. I was readv. I had come to face the world-to challenge the abyss. I heard the music's piercing sound. I marched with steady step and as I went I caught my PARENTS' eyes among those who came to watch. It pierces my very soul and my heart bleeds. Fear. Cold beads materialize and then disappear, leaving me chilled. I am alone. Ira-he is dead now. They hauled him off one night and played a game with him. They fired. He was their target. Miriam-she is gone too. They starved her and beat her until she melted in convulsing pain. My father, my mother-members of the long parade that slowly marched. Animals to their slaughter, sensing in every step the nearing fumes of death. Heavy chains lacerated their mortal flesh. Muzzled like dogs. Abomination. I will fool them. I will not let them throw me into their ovens and laugh as I turn to floating ash. I will not be tortured. I will not be killed. I will not die, a toy of their ugly game, a plaything of their inane pleasure. Oh, please help me. I must escape. I must leave this infernal hell-hole. I must once more breathe air that is fresh and alive. Air that is not putrid with the rancid fumes of death. I have the pass. I know what to answer. My name is as one of theirs now. My clothes are as theirs are. My speech has been assimilated. How dirty I feel dressed in the garb of scum, how repulsive, But this shall not last! Once I escape, my soul shall be cleansed by freedom. No longer will I wear the yellow badge of shame. I will wear a bright badge of pride that will glisten as I walk and radiate with the brilliance of self-respect. The wire fence is near now. Like the deadly thorns of a desert plant its lethal claws protrude. The sentry paces back and forth with a hard, conditioned gait. His steps are short, direct, equal, precise. I hate him. I hate them all! My eyes brim with anger and its violent offspring reach my lips in moist, briny droplets. He de- mands the pass. Oh, be with me now. . . The next morning the mangled body of a I5 year old girl was found. They played their game of darts and one more was added to their pile of human flesh. The body of the toy lies dead, but the soul is rising upwards. . . The heavens seem happy now. Their beauty is embellished by a strange antici- pation. The milky-white clouds spread their fluffy arms in welcome. The smiling sun beams down on the little soul with caressing warmth. On earth she was tred upon and stepped on. On earth she was hated and shamed. But here the little soul knows it will be different. Here the little soul knows she will be loved .... jk? A day ago when her heart was full of misgiving, full of fears of the unknown? No, it was four days ago to be exact. She had entered the room through a crack in the wall. Behind her was a haze, fearful and meaningless. In front was an even more dreadful sight. Tremendous, awesome and commanding creatures covered the scene, Lest they catch sight of her and devour her, she made herself as small as possible. The whole of that first day was spent in avoiding these beings, these entities with eyes that dared you to disobey. Suddenly it was night. It was morning. The second day. The end of the begin- ning, She had advanced from her secluded snare, unnoticed by the giants or even by herself. Another had taken her place, had she given but a glance she would have seen a gap in place of the faint cracks And yet the third day. She had begun to denote a glint of kindness in those eyes. In herself she perceived a growth. Wings? Perhaps a soaring of the spirits to greater heights? A look back would have shown a narrow window. Wisps of sunshine and light would beckon to her. But her eyes were turned only to this strange, small world. The fourth and final day! At last! Lo-upon emerging on this day, she had become one of those monsters. Fear not, she hadn't claws nor scales. Instead she felt and seemed ethereal, exquisite and heavenly. -A heady, airy feeling was about her. Now in fact she smiled at her previous imaginings. The crack was a wide open door. The view outside, the clearest and loveliest she had ever seen. Pro'udly and with confidence she strode through the open gate. , Was it just yesterday? Time had passed so quickly, yet she realized it was four days ago. With the passing of time many subtle changes had occurred. A frightened young-girl with few ideas about the world had entered in her stead. I left, the essential key in my hand. Now she knew. This wasn't the only crack she would encounter. In fact, she herself would have to make the crack many times in many a solid wall. One thought, however, loomed the largest-These four days I will never forget. . . 1 W1 V ,A V . ,V 1 ..
