N onrished by Maris imagination it flourishes and bnrgeons forth as a vision of the future-a dream gnafwing to be fulfilled-the staff of which empires are biiiltg that 'which deposes monarchs, wreaks holoeansts, and impels the steady drive of progress. As certain ethereal images lifted Man from the dnst whence he came and raised him to be king of all the world second only to G-d who did create him, so does the reali- zation of others, return him to his place of origin. W'e dream with the fer-vent hope and belief, that only youth can possess, that our dreams shall be realities and a better world 'wrought throngh them. THE DREAM 5 1 4 3 9? Cor studentsj and the ad- ministration. While waging a constant battle with the head of the opposition, Rabbi Friedman, is a primary plank in the G.O.'s platform Cand a time-consum- ing occupation of Rachel and Henniej it is by no means the only one. In fact all programs end up with bi-partisan backing. Some such projects this year were the assemblies before each Yom-Tov, the Chanukah Chagiga, the Purim Play, the Charity Drive, clubs, theatre parties C The Tenth Man, New York Philharmonic, The Pirates of Penzance, Israeli Dance Festival, Phoenix Pro- ductions, etc. When all is said and done it is the G.O. that governs the fate of all extra- curricular activities. Though it may be regarded as slander by some, the members of Arista, or the Segulah Chapter of the National Honor Society, are a select group con- taining the cream of Central's crop. The bi-weekly meetings ruled over by the advisor, Rabbi Dardac, and conducted by Miriam Landesman and Betty Sachs frequently result in verbal jousts between the more eloquent parties of Arista. Despite this, things are accomplished. Arista-led Tephila fills the classrooms each morning and tutors are provided for girls encountering difficulty in their schoolwork. A program of speakers who address Arista and all other interested people has been intro- duced with three resounding successes thus far. The girls are good eggs but normal Centralites in most respects. The aver- age record of latenesses and absences equals, and even surpasses Csince a majority of the members are seniorsj that of the other students. . . I . li . 'Tis good to have a dreamland in which to gaze, And see it unmarred with strife. I surmise it will never be as we yearn. We must live our lives! VVe must face reality! It is, however, pleasant and serene to turn To our world of dreamsg Soul's haven through eternity By Susan Nobel jhe .gnalairafion 0 jruflz by Freyda Fisch DREAMS, the word itself sets up a picture in one's mind. This picture, inevitably, is something hazy, unclear, and unreal. Dreams are wonderful- in their time. But dreams alone are not enough. A good life needs a good foundation, one that is solid, and real, and true. Judaism, whose basic elements are Truth, Justice, and Freedom, provides this foundation. Judaism is a code of laws, setting forth a way of life. These laws, stated in the Torah, govern every facet of our lives, both spiritual and material. The corner-stone of the foundation is the belief in One Being, perfect in every way, who created the world, and through His will keeps it in existence. The Torah, His gift to Bnai Yisrael, is the only means to true happiness. The Torah way of life embodies f'good, and wages a constant war with evil. The mitzvot are battle strategies for the forces of good Our prophets throughout generations were the generals of the army, and courageously led the battle. But Judaism does not stop with the mitzvot, the path to happiness, it goes on to the conclusion-the realization of this happiness: the knowledge that the time will come when good will be victorious, when the mitzvot will be kept in their entirety, in short, when Mashiach will come. Y'mos I-Iamashiach is not a dream, it is a reality that exists now, but only in a different plane-in potential. It is not yet here in our plane-an actuality for us. This very concept is one of the basic beliefs of Judaism. Our prophets elaborated on this future state in many places. It will be the time when all nations will recognize G-d as the creator and the all-powerful. It will be the time of the punishment and reward of complete nations. At this time Bnai Yisrael will be elevated to the heights, our oppressors will be vanquished, and the glory and supremity of Hashem will be apparent to all. This belief in the final triumph of Good may seem to breed complacence in people, that despite their personal action Good will triumph and Mashiach will come. In reality, however, this does not hold true. The fallacy in so thinking is two-fold. First-there is a matter of personal reward and punishment. Each person shall receive according to his actions, an incentive providing constant ammuni- tion in the personal battle. Second-Mashiach shall surely come, but the time of his coming is determined by our actions. It is stated in Yeshaya 6O:22, I am the L-rd, in its time I shall hasten it, in reference to Y'mos Hamashiach. Apparently, this is a contradiction: if it is in its time, a set time, how can it be hastened? But Rashi explains it beautifully thus,-If they CBnai Yisraelj are worthy, G-d shall hasten the redemption-If they are not worthy, it shall come in its set time. No, Judaism is not a dream in the general sense of the word. It is reality, it is truth, it is a way of life. But it is also an ambition and an incentive. It is an inspiration for dreams more glorious, more uplifting, more comforting than any mere hearts could invent. THESE ARE THE DREAMS THAT FIRE MEN'S HEARTS-TO BUILD, TO MAKE, TO DO THE AIITZVOT, TO SING AND SAY THE TORAH.
