These ruins were our gift from the Anti-semites of the generations. Yet we discarded these ruins of despair and grasped again for the heritage that we would ensure our survival, the heritage that had ensured our survival against persecution throughout the centuries-the Torah. our Tree of Life. This is the source from which we and our parents have drawn life. Every action we performed is influenced by the laws of the Torah. The Torah is the consummation of all our desires. it eliminates the waste and keeps only the good. It is the great teacher that teaches us what is good: what is life. The Torah is the past, present and future-not just of our nation as a whole but of every one of us. It is our own personal source. and. through our fulfillment of it, It takes on for us its own personal meaning. 120 WP' 02 to the fulflhnent of our ideals and the preservation of our divine heritage we graduate and anxiously greet the future Wie lcnow the spiritual nourishment with which our parents and teachers have .sustained us throughout our lives. They worked themselves up to more difficult folk dances. The girls have danced in such school functions as the Chanukah Gha- giga and Purim Operetta. y The Ghalil Glub's main objective is to learn the fundamentals of music reading. At the outset, the girls learn most of the notes and play many simple songs. By the end of the term. they have mastered all of the notes and many of the beau- tiful Israeli songs arranged for Chalil. This is the first year that the Hebrew Music Club has been instituted into our vast array of clubs. Each week we concentrate on one particular Israeli singer and we play his or her records. Occasionally we hear reports on the individual vocalist. For each meeting girls bring records, therefore We have a vast variety of music. If one would walk into the club while it is in process they would probably find the girls clapping and sing- ing along with the records. The classical music club is one of the newly formed organizations in our school. Its leaders. F ay Xlfaldman and Barbara Forst. state that its objective is twofold: First it endeavors to give those who have had au introduction to great musical compositions an opportunity to further this knowledge: second it attempts to acquaint interested newcomers with the basic works of the great masters. This objective has been carried into effect through a flexible program which in- cludes the playing of various selected records. CLASSICAL MUSIC CLUB First Rolf: Fay XYaldman. Schwartzg E. Cerwirtzg Reimang Y. Senderowitz: P, CHANUKAH CHAGIGA Our Chanukah Chagiga, one of the major under- takings of the GO., was held this year in B.T.A. Festivities promptly commenced with the digni- fied ritual of lighting the Chanukah candles per- formed by Rabbi Moshe Berenholtz. This was followed with an address befitting the occasion by Mr. Josef Weinstein. At this point, the pre- sentation of the evening's entertainment was assumed by the girls themselves. Goldie Feld, an amusing and witty M.C., provided the ap- propriate introduction for the various performing groups. First, the Hebrew dancers, led by Aviva Ger- shuni, performed a series of popular and interpretive Israeli dances. Next, a group of Chalilists, under the able direction of Yospa Senderowitz and a choral group, led by Phyllis Motechin, presented a medley of Hebrew songs. The program ended with a short comic skit en- titled Malke and her Latke Makersf, The entire evening was acknowledged as entertaining and highly successful. T x . .- V I f - K I , X 'A 5 X -' . . The producers, Helen Stone and Helen XYolf. the directors, Miri- am Dominitz and janet Oselka, and the scenic designer, Naomi Burstein, had Certain Smiles all over their faces. The presence of a large amount of guests verv naturally added to the general exuberance. S'wonderful. S'marvelous to set a good precedent. May the future Student Councils be as radical in their ideas and as successful in their endeavors. qw CHARITY DRIVE' Each year, Yeshiva University, conducts a charity drive which is continued for ten weeks. All the undergraduate schools participate. Central, under the leadership of Bryna Charney, contributed Over- 340000. l The money was collected in various ways. Some classes held auctions and others cake sales. The GO. also contributed to the charity drive by giving 252 of the proceeds from the Purim operetta. The money was divided among many worthy charities both here and in Israel. .HE A BNLX L, eilxclyjfy MOTHER- DAUGHTER E1 rffliwi LUNCHEON v ll I! Under the chairmanship of Mrs. Coldblatt, the annual Mother-Daughter luncheon was a great success. Greetings were extended by Dr. Lewin, Hebrew Principal, and by Mrs. S. J. Chill, P.T.A. President. The highlight of the afternoon was a fashion show with our own girls modeling the dresses. A wonderful afternoon was the opinion of one and all. LAG B'OMER This year our annual L'ag B'omer outing was a trip to Bear Mountain. All those participating met in school at 10 a.m. and then left in a group for the boat. The girls were accompanied by Rabbi Friedman, Mrs. Green, Dr. Jofen, Miss Z. Epstein, Rabbi Perlman, and Mr. Cantor. At Bear Mountain the program followed was similar to those of our previous outings to Alley Pond Park. This included a picnic lunch, basket- ball, volley ball, and races. The return trip was marked by spirited sing- ing of Israeli songs. YOM HAATZMAUT I wifi O Qt, ll 'S P W' QQ WVe are proud of the extraordinary ruach dis- played by the girls of our school when we cele- brated Israel's eleventh anniversary. This was the Forest of Education, and each of its trees was representative of one form of institution of learning. The trees of the forest were of a great variety of species. Nevertheless, they all seemed to share certain traits in common. To begin with, they all stood tall and erect, and their great height served to emphasize their mighty strength. Furthermore, they all seemed to be most healthy, and their hearty, robust appearance tended to indicate unfailing vigor. In addition, they were all the common possessors of an unfaltering sense of self pride. They seemed to be well aware of their handsome demeanor and of the deep admiration which they evoked from all who observed them. This caused them to assume a guise of haughty arrogance as they exalted in their self-impor- tance. Only one aspect of these trees failed to meet the high standard of excellence which characterized all their other portions. This was by Cecile Baer their fruit, which, for some incomprehensible reason, was generally small, shriveled, and un- unsightly. Deep in the midst of this Forest of Education, however, stood a little tree which differed greatly from its brethren. This tree was of a rare species known as Arbor Yeshivae. It was rather short in height, and, unlike the rigid erectness of the other trees, it bent slightly. It also lacked the healthy vigor of its fellow trees and was, in fact, often plagued by minor illnesses and disorders. But the aspect which caused it to differ most greatly from the other trees of the forest was its humbleness and humility. While all- the trees around it spoke ostentatiously of their great im- portance, it kept silent and tended rather toward an attitude of self-abasement. The other trees mocked it and laughed at it incessantly. Never- theless, in spite of their scorn for this little tree, they were forced to admit that in one aspect, it far surpassed them in excellence. Its fruit was of an exquisite nature. Round, healthy and ripe, it was indicative of a pure wholesomeness of nature that could not be equaled. One day, a storm began to brew far off in the distance. At first it was merely an excessively strong breeze, but the little tree, upon perceiving this early sign of a storm, was immediately Filled with apprehension, and it began to take measures to protect itself and its precious fruit. The other trees, however, ridiculed its alarm over the small breeze, and took no precautions at all. Soon the breeze grew into a huge gust of wind, and this was presently accompanied by thunder, light- ning, and heavy torrents of rain. The skies dark- ened in anger, and the storm wreaked its vengeance on the earth. It raged for several days and nights, then suddenly, it ceased. Back in the Forest of Education, the signs of devastation were overwhelming. The trees, which had stubbornly maintained their arrogance against the storm, had been completely de- stroyed. Only one little tree remained standing -the Arbor Yeshivae. Thus, in spite of hardship and misfortune which have succeeded in quelling others much stronger than it, Arbor Yeshivae continues to live on, together with the institution of learning which it represents. lffli ?E?2E?iE252?E?E5E?2:2 4 '41' -..,,., . ,.,... 1 .,..-.. - Aww ' . . it ' 'r '-'r '4f-1-1f1111f1 2 1 1 .,..' ?f:i1i1Aii.1:eia1a:2l ..., 1 '- ,,..,,.:,:. 5: Etemal Lmk ,,.,. t .,.,..,.. f-:- .... .,.,.,.,.,.,.,. by Linda Greenfeld A chain of Fate links through manis destined life While in and out man's life it curves and bends, We cannot cut it with a blade or knife For, lo, 'tis G-d who holds the very ends!
