Each candle, a sentinel of time, shines proudly, beaming forth a tiny ray of light which glows as if with a secret vision, casting mysterious shadows whose vague shapes seem to contain the hidden secrets of the world. Look, deep in those flickering shadows lies the symbol of all the Iewish women who have passed through the annals of history kindling the lamp of humanity, shedding light on the seeds of civilization, reaping the fertile fruits to benefit all man- kind. Dark: The lonely wail of Ghettos, of grief beneath oppression, can be heard throughout the world. The ominous cloud of death hangs heavy over the Iewish people who cry out beneath the deluge of terror. The sparks of love inherent in every woman cannot be extinguished beneath this torment of tears, instead they wield together in a flame of hope, searing the bitter fruits of war and strife and blazing a path towards the promise of a land, a nation, a dream. Dawn: The vibrant throb of life swells into harmony, the birth of a new day floods the sky with light. Ever since the miracle which first set the pulse of the world in motion, Iewish women have brought us the guiding lights of prophetesses, the wisdom of Iudges, the spirits of warriors, and the encom- passing love of motherhood. Unobtrusively, they have endowed the treasures of the world with lavish gifts, leaving an indelible imprint upon countless vocations ranging from art to science, from education to housekeeping. With pure hearts and willing hands they have hewed compassion out of the rough stone of man's intolerance to man, smoothing the jagged edges of prejudice, molding destiny with the creation of brotherhood, the world's promise of peace. Pf0phc'.fy.' The great faith of all womanhood has served as an incentive throughout the centuries, guiding the paths of the preceding generations who have stum- bled along the byways of life in quest of an ideal. This great faith which stems from every woman is the light of the world, and, like a shining beacon, it will continue to light the path for posterity down through the ages. This is the rare quality that is to be found in all great actors. This trait requires an understanding of human emotions which is often brought about by personal conflicts and ordeals. Such was the case with Sarah Bernhardt, in the opinion of some, the greatest actress who ever lived. Sarah was born in Paris, France, in the year 1845. She was of Iewish descent. At twelve, her parents had her baptized, and upon her own request she was committed to a convent. At the age of 13, she entered the Conservatoire. There she won second prize for comedy and for drama. This inspired her to pursue an acting career. At seventeen, Sarah made her debut as an actress at the Comedie Francaise. After her debut she came to the decision that her life's desire was acting. She lived for the moments when she could stand on the stage and hear the applause of the audience, the great mass of people whom- she took close to her heart at every performance. Sarah found it easy to captivate the audi- ence after a short time, for the spell of her acting was rare and beautiful. Performances multiplied in number, and her fame spread. The power of her emotional acting, her magnetic personality, and her voix d'or soon made Sarah Bernhardt recognized unquestionably as being the greatest actress of her day. After breaking ties with the Academic Francaise, she started on a world tour. In 1914, The Legion of Honour was conferred upon her. An accident necessitated the amputation of Sarah's leg. Nevertheless, when the World War came she played at the front, toured America and went to London. Most actors are known only for the moment. When they die, their fame dies. When Sarah Bernhardt died, in Paris, in the year 1923, her fame con- tinued to live. She disproved the theory of the heartless public. Sarah will always be remembered as a courageous woman who was endowed with the power of bringing whatever emotions she wished to the hearts of others. She made them forget their heartaches, and brought them into a world of fantasy, enjoyable to all. Unfortunately, she could not escape the reality of her own misfortunes. lust as Sarah Bernhardt did not forsake her public at the time of her sorrow, we shall not forsake her memory for a long time to come. Naomi Roizmafz ww You and I have often hummed the haunting and hopeful tune of Ani- Maamin, and many are the times that we whirled deliriously to the rhythm of the Horah, or pitched in joyously to the Zmirot around the Shabbat table. Yet, have we ever stopped to wonder at the origin of this music? As long as it Hlls our hearts with joy, or brings a reminder of our glorious history and accurately expresses our emotions in beauty and splendor and sadness, this is all that matters. However, there is a great satisfaction in knowing that not only the un- known composers of these Nigunim were Iewish, but for us girls, there is the added pat-on-the-back of discovering that a large slice of this musical genius is composed of Iewish women. Since Miriam the Prophetess led the Daughters of Israel in song while courageously crossing the Red Sea, Iewish women composers and musicians have expressed their hopes and anguish, and translated their thoughts into immortal music. Iewish music has captured the colors of the skies beneath which our people have wandered. French, Russian, German-there is a dash, a sparkling of every land, in the gay and sad notes of our songs. But the leitmotif is its unique quality, the individual emphasis that singles it out from all the other music in the world. I am speaking, of course, of the Yiddish touchf' How can I best describe this touch peculiar to our music? Perhaps, if you think back to all the Iewish music you have heard, you will grasp what I mean. Do you recall that quality of sadness, elusive and tantalizing, that note of joy that carries a future promise rather than a past regret, the mingling of tears and smiles? That is the Yiddish touch. Like our people, our music has the heart of youth and the head of age. We are the oldest in wisdom, learning and experience. But ever, and at all times, we have sung with the conviction, enthusiasm, and open heart of eternal youthi. Our music is a conglomeration of our experiences. We suffered-it is in our music. We hoped-that is in our music too. We never despaired-our history proves that, and our music accents it. The Bible's many descriptions and praises of women's sterling qualities are well known, especially through the acrostic poem in Proverbs which is recited every Friday evening by the husband in honor of his wife. Women were the first to evince willingness to accept the Torah. They did not participate in the sins of the worship of the golden calf and in the sending of the spies. It was through the merits of women that the Israelites were redeemed from Egypt. Two books of the Bible, Ruth and Esther, are named after women. The main function of women was that of guardian of the home. The home is the real temple of women, the education of her children is her divine service, and her family is her congregation. It was her duty to supervise all domestic matters, the maintenance of the Kashruth, the home celebration of the Sabbath and festivals, the early education of her sons and her daughters. The wife also encouraged her husband to study Torah and engage in con- tinuous study. As a rule, women never studied Torah as academically as men, but by constant practice they became familiar with the main body of the everyday laws. Many women are recorded as being Torah scholars in the fullest sense of the word. The legal opinion of Beruriah, wife of Meir, is quoted with deference in the Talmud. The wife of Iacob ben Iudah Mizrahi continued to direct his Yeshivah after his death. The daughter of the Exilarch Samuel ben Eli of Baghdad and Miriam Shapira both taught Torah to male students from whom they were separated by a curtain. Another Miriam was one of those who brought about deliverance from Egyptian bondage, Achaliah and Salome Alexandria reigned over the Iews. During the medieval period there were a number of women scribes, translators and publishers. In the nineteenth century the Maid of Ludomiru functioned as a Hassidic Rebbe and had many adherents. Other worthy women were Iael, Iudith and Hannah. In modern times we see the growth of Zionist and religious move- ments. Thus we see that Iewish women throughout the ages have functioned in the past, present and will continue to do so in the future. We svs itch you now to the editors of the news section of our paper, Hadassah Kain and Aline Borowsky who are at this moment in the sh aylon papered room of the Hoffman building 1n Tel Aviv Ladies and Gentlemen, we truly Wish you could all be here with us to- night The excitement is overpowering, and everyone who is anyone is here with us in this room. Naturally it will be impossible for us to speak with all those present but we ll do our best. There on our left is the great artist Fran- lill if f0NVfNl'0N Tonightoa great event is taking place in Tel-Aviv, Israel. Of course, we cine better known as the second Rembrandt, and to her right the illustrious Hadassah Teitz who was nominated for the Nobel prize on the basis of her new found cure for the common cold. There's a group of people in the middle of the room, let's listen to their conversation. They seem to be discussing Shirley Sonnenfeld's newly published book on modern Israeli literature. She seems to have completely captured the attention of the eminent mathemati- cian, Rochelle Kellman, and Esther Walkin, Professor of languages at Tel- Aviv College. Stop-we interrupt this program for a brief announcement. We have just learned that Rebecca Cohen and Rebeccah Handel have become the first two people to successfully reach the moon. It is especially significant that this happened on the eve of this Iewish Women's Convention. Congratula- tions! W'e switch you back to Tel-Aviv. Tl1e hall has quieted down. The Chairman and Vice Chairman of this affair, Cecily Stolnitz and Sura Schreiber respectively, have now entered the room and people are beginning to take their seats. Oh, but wait, no Conven- tion could be complete without the style added to it by those famous designers, Kushner and Nusbaum, and here they are now. Tonight we have with us the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra. As I look at the orchestra I notice that great pianist Marcia Margulies. You know that this orchestra is the only one that has a chalil section. The one person responsible for this is a woman known to all of us-Anna Wolf. First on our program are those three musical comedy stars, Rikki Klein, Rhoda Lerner and Edith Freier. The audience is quiet as the program begins .... Weren't they wonderful? Iust listen to that ovation. Next on the program is Nora, the successor to Arthur Murray .... What applause! A fifteen minute intermission will now follow. We switch you to our reporter, Pearl Kidansky, on the opposite side of the auditorium. Thank you Aline and Hadassah. Good evening ladies and gentlemen. Well, this is a great night for all of us. As I look about me at the audience I see many well known celebrities and many personal friends. In the front I see Barbara Gross, creator of the character Sue, known and loved through- out the world. Next to her I see Debra Simanowitz, noted decoder for the F.B.I. Next to her are Anne Rosenbaum and Rochelle Rothberg. These two women are great philanthropists whose money made this convention possible. Near them I see my good friends Rosalie Rabinowitz, Roslyn Hoffman and Iudith Lapidus, the noted authority on opera of the Nineteenth Century. Sit- ting directly in back of her are the ofhcers of the Crown Heights Women's organization, Gloria Frank, Devora Cohen, Audrey Katz, Rachel Youlus, Harriet Bassiur and Vita Sladowsky. Oh, I see the noted historians, Debra Winter, Florence Leibowitz and Saranne Eskolsky. Speaking to them are the Miss Israeli' winners of the past three years, Denah Goldman, Diana Bernstein and Adele Levine. I just noticed some of my friends from the vari- ous kibbutzim in Israel, Renee Kirschner, Esther Presler and Leah Botwinick. Foreign correspondent Ruth Reutlinger is covering this convention for Asso- ciated News. Miss Reutlinger is able to catch every word here because she learned stenography from Sema Edelman. Miss Edelman recently compiled a new system of shorthand designed to enable the writer to catch 250 Words per minute. From Bnai Brak we have with us tonight Dina Horowitz and Eva Oster- reicher., Right now I am waving to Adelaide Strahlberg and Claire Solomon, noted biologists. I hope they see me. Oh, I just received the signal and the intermission is about over. Miss Iudyta Bernstein has just announced that the first lecturers are about to be given. One on Anthropology will be given by Dr. Marcia Ginsberg. The second, on Progressive Education will be by Prcr fessor Saralie Zeitz of Stern College, the third on Modern Literature by Pro- fessor Betty Goldberg also of Stern College. Since We are not broadcasting these lectures we will switch you to the Betty Friedman Show which is now in progress. , This is the World Iewish Women's Convention in Tel-Aviv signing off for the night. Sum Schreiber, Cecily Slolnilz 6' Rebeccah Handel llzlzaf Centra! Girls Are Macfe of An uninformed gent once, long ago, On the subject of girls thought there was little to know, Vfrote that a girl contains sugar and spice, And thoughtfully added all that is nice. However, this rhyme no longer holds true, If you see a Central girl, you'll change your view. Her assets and charms take too long to compute, Ask any fellow-he won't dispute. A Central girl is curved and neat, Not too much bone, and not too much meat, For what can compare to three flights of stair, When a girl has pounds shed like to pare. To make out well in this fair school, A girl must surpass the golden rule. To get her 90's she must provide, Hard work, study and favors on the side. A Central girl's charitable, I'll prove to you, Shelll give money and time when you ask her to. But first take heed, for your own protection, 'Cause the money goes to the yearbook collection. My reputation I will stake, To say that Central takes the cake. In conclusion, though, let me state, Pardon if I exaggerate. Debbie Simanowitz 6 Florence Leibowizz Dear Central, We've been together for four long years, Through thick and thin, laughter and tears. I suppose I should say I've had lots of fun, Which is true, I'll admit, now I've begun. With high ideals and a lofty dream, In every eye a hopeful gleam. From the five boroughs and beyond too, For education we came to you. We came here that first day of school, And were promptly herded to the chapel--er, shul. Programs given, classes assigned, Into two strongholds we were combined. Four years have passed and now we are older, We're much more weary but very much bolder. We're wise to the ways of our pedagogues, Whom we thought of as tyrants and demagogues. We've had lots of laughs and shed lots of tears, It was a long hard climb, these four years. Some of us climbed with the greatest ease, Many of us stumbled and Uskinned our knees.n You've caused us many worries and cares, Central, and many the time you gave us a scare. Finals and such were pains in the neck, With their end who wasn't a wreck? Not only the students but the teachers too, And why was this? Because of you. We've come to eighth term and are about to leave, It has come so soon it's hard to believe. The time has dragged and the time has flown, But it has been a pleasure you to have known. When the last class ends and we hear the final bell, We'll leave with fond memories.
