ALUMNI OFFICE YESHIVA UNIVERSITY ENUE AND 186th STREET NEW YORK, N. Y 10033 AMSTERDAM AV GROWTH Growfh is a basic funcfion of all life. As such, if has long been recognized and appreciafed by mankind. The presenf era of considerable scienfific developmenf has caused fhe universal recognifion of growfh on a higher plane, fhaf of fhe mind. Yef, in one of fhe greaf paradoxes of all fime--fhe sfep from a primal fo a higher level of man's undersfanding-has become a seemingly insurmounfable barrier againsf furfher advancemenf. Forfunafely, if is no+ necessary fo search deeply info-fhe complexify fha-l is man fo find an undersfanding of 'lhis parficular incongruify. Through fhe ages, man has gained fhe power 'lo govern his surroundings only fhrough a refusal fo sfagnafe. The greaf minds of all fimes have recognized fhis, buf have used 'lhis necessify as a rafionale: We musf forge ahead, grow numerous and all powerful. Only when we have achieved fofal confrol of our environmenf can we afford a crifical evaluafion. Only 'l'l1en can we roof ouf l'he evils we have amassed. Unforfunafely, 'lhe evils have become ingrained in our sociefy. Today, we sfand amazed by fhe sighf of man unable fo achieve peace, even wifhin himself, because of his inabilify fo differenfiafe befween fhe means he has been given and fhe end he should affain: frue moral advancemenf. Yeshiva has also gone asfray. She has become confenf fo live by fhe ma-lerialisfic values of fhe sociefy in which she is locafedg 'lo have fhe firsf medical school and fhe finesf physical planfg buf nof fo serve primarily as fhe sfandard bearer of fhe only lasfing value--fhe Torah of Judaism. There is a Midrash fhaf sfafes: Torah is l-he only worfhy possession, for all of man's ofher valuables may be 'laken from him. Our Rabbis were perplexed by fhe obvious quesfion fhis sfafemenf broughf fo mind. Why is only fhe Torah menfioned? No form of knowledge can be sfolen. The answer fhey presenfed sums up wifh 'lofal clarify fhe fhesis herein presenfed. Torah is menfioned above all because only Torah can change fhe essence of man, basically and inexorably for 'lhe beffer. The fofal inabilify of mundane knowledge in making man morally beffer was finally and unequivocably demonsfrafed by fhe flourishing of secular science and philosophy in 'l'he besfial afmosphere fhaf was Hifler's Third Reich. We, fhe producfs of an enlighfened age, have long been cognizanf of fhe imporfance of developmenf in 'l'he physical and menfal realms. Yef, we are faced wifh fhe apalling sighf of man, ready fo march forfh and conquer fhe Universe wifhouf having firsf conquered himself. lf is for us, fhen, 'lo rededicafe ourselves 'lo a moral sfandard reiecfed in fhe name of infellecf. Those of us who remain here musf work diligenfly fo improve Yeshiva so fhaf she may serve us in beffering our world. Those of us who leave musf use fhal' which we have gained here so fhaf we may serve as a beacon, guiding man back onfo 'lhe road of humanify. Only in fhis way can we bring abouf 'lhe Efernal Goal. 'l'o which we are dedicafed-THE F-ULFILLMENT OF MAN lN THE IMAGE OF' G - D . Sheldon Fink
