God bless you, Mom, and also you, Dad, For bringing me into this world like you have. When I was in grammar school you didn't fret If I came home with my clothes torn and wet. When I had the measles and chicken pox too, Who stayed up with me at night? I'm sure it was you. My Birthdays! You always remembered them and more 'Though I often forget the day of yours. You never lost your temper when I was late For dinner or a very important date. The dinner was kept in the oven to heat So that I wouldn't have to eat cold pig's feet. My clothes were washed and ironed each week And the holes were mended before they could be weak. When I asked for the car it was usually given Because you knew I thought I was really livin'. You footed my bills for eighteen years And taught me to smile in spite of my tears. Supporting my viewpoint in the face of opposition And helping me to better my position. And all the fuss you made over my first date, Even though I got home late. I brought home my homework night after night You helped me get A's with all your might. On Sundays I'd always sleep late, And wake up in time to keep a date. When I received my diploma, you looked so proud, I could see your face beaming as I looked into the crowd. I Thank you for being the Mom and Dad you are, I hope that you will always be proud of me as I You have been so far. I -ROSEMARY BARCELLOS f A N rr f . it 4 s'E5' ani ard ,fxlh , x xr Q, di? For the past four years she has instructed us in all phases of our high school work. She unselfishly gives of her time, energy and ability in both curricular and extra-curricular work to the students of Yerington High School. PRODUCERS 4 f 4 I :B s f- : f I M I H 1,2 55 '11 zz H7 12? M . 7 it is .m-' Many people have a deep misconception of what processes are carried through in our present day schools. It is felt by many that schools teach children to pass examinations - this being the proving ground for the future. However, through many trials and errors, it has been found that the ability to pass an examination is a minor attribute and the main obiective of our present day high school is to train youths to live and grow intelligently. You young ladies and young men of the graduating class of 1954 have gone through this process and now, we sincerely hope, you are prepared to make further progress toward your final goal. The rest is up to you. Stop staring up the steps and start stepping up the stairs. My sincere congratulations on your graduation and many best wishes for a grand future. GRANT DAVIS Principal VERNON PURSEL President STUDENT COUNCIL Perhaps the most democratic and entirely student run organization in the school is the Student Council. Composed of representatives from each class, they govern the student body wisely and well. Under the direction of their able president, Vernon Pursel, and sponsor, Grant Davis, they have thus far planned the school calendar, guaranteed national assemblies for next year, taken care of all financial business of the student body, and planned interesting student body assemblies. Whenever a group of people are gathered to work for the welfare of another group, their task becomes one of iudicious unselfishness. Through their untiring efforts Yerington High School has made great strides in the past school year. Under the guidance of Miss Anne Lucas and Mr. Tod Carlini, the class of '54 enioyed another successful year. Revenue came in from selling at basketball and football games, and from the senior play, a three-act comedy-mystery, entitled Stranger in the Night which was given in April. The biggest event of our year was the Senior Ball. Our theme was Lamp- Iighter's Serenade. John Perry and Leona Mayginnes were crowned King and Queen of the Ball. June second-Senior Sneak Day-was memorable. We all iourneyed to Lake Tahoe for the day. Then the night of June fourth-and another class graduates, ending their high school education and activities. This year has been a very favorable one for the Juniors under the leadership of our class officers, pictured above, and our advisors-Miss Cecilly Golden and Mr. Stanton Oates. Some of our many activities included-handling concessions at football and basketball games, our class play, The Beauty and the Beef, which was presented in the fall, Junior Assembly, Box Social Dance, and the Junior-Senior Banquet. Stardust was chosen as the theme of our Junior Prom. Silver stars were hung from a blue crepe paper ceiling, and the bandstand was draped with angel's hair to represent a cloud. The freshman class that entered the beautiful new Yerington High School September 8, 1953, is one of the largest classes in the history of the school, and will be the first one to go through its four years in the new school building. The officers for the year led the class through a very active season which in- cluded entertaining the student body, selling at the games, a very special Frosh Return on May l, and contributing many loud voices to the cheering section. We feel this has been an exceptional year, we have had two very capable class sponsors, Mrs. Madden and Mr. Gray, to help us when we needed it. We undertook the iob of planning, preparing, and planting the lawn in front of the high school, and we installed the pipe for the underground sprinkling system. We held two successful turkey shoots on December 6 and 13, helped to complete the new shop, and staged a magazine sub- scription drive to sell the Farm Quarterly magazine. Thirteen members attended the Northern District F.F.A. Conven- tion in Reno on March 29 and 30, and the group placed third. Jamie Domenici and Bill Penrose qualified for the livestock judging team which goes to Kansas City this fall. bn TOP ROW: D. Runyon, D. McGowan, H. Scierine, G. Francis, A. Tamagini, B. Penrose, J. The boys really felt at home with our coach, Tod Carlini, and our assistant coach, Dale Riddle, settled down and quickly went to work. They won all of their conference games and lost only two of the non-conference games. Our boys built up a terrific momentum at the first of the season and kept right on coasting until the last two games before the championship tilt with Manogue in which they cap- tured the state A division crown. It was this game which was the thriller of the season. The Manogue team was fired up and allowed the Lions only one touchdown in the first half while they piled up twenty apparently easy points.
