SENIORS if 3 Q ,,, ,-JE v-...N SENIOR HISTORY Talent, spirit, and the will to take over the lead, have and will always be the guiding directions of the Class of '66. These three molded together made not a few individuals, but a group acting as one. The talent has been found in many wide and dif- fering fields. Members have had the ability to be outstanding scholars, musicians, athletes, and Thes- pians. Each member has had the spirit which enabled him to gain the top goals which he has strived for. With class spirit high, we, as a group, were able to attain all the heights of greatness. From the beginning our class worked by qualities of leadership which has shown like a beacon for the rest to follow. In the light of future years we hope these three become as one to direct us in our tasks of life which we now face. As Freshmen we were determinedto become the best! We seventy-five freshmen were greeted at the hallowed halls of Yelm High School humble , respect- ful, and with the will to take over the lead. After initiation, spirits were regained and we were back on our feet to elect jack Kominski as president and Earlene Hemess as vice-president. Susie Tobin was there withpencil andpaper as the secretary. Jennifer Murphy was the money taker with Terry Gould as the sgt. at arms. We played a big hand in the first Home- coming parade by taking the third place with the float, Remember When. We took over the lead when all danced to Sax's Fifth Avenue as the band played--the 1:radition of the live band was then set for the rest to follow. As Sophomores we still had the drive to become the best. We were on our way with four of the varsity yell leaders coming from our class. Our classmates were among the top in sports with the boys playing on the varsity football squad and winning games on the junior varsity basketball team. Aside from the sports, we elected Mike McFaul to the presidency with Diane Stunmers as his hand- mate. Mary Cameron kept the minutes as secretary. Jack Kominski held the order with the office of sgt. at arms. Earlene Hernesskept Us informed as student council representative. The second annual Homecomingparade included ourfloat, The Spirit of '63 . All gatheredto dance to the eerie sounds of the Outer Limits for our class dance. 'iz H., llsfl: wvilxihmy. XX Class 016196675 Jim Henderson, Student Coun- cil Representative, Robert Ol- son, Sgt. at Arms, Pat Shat- tuck, Secretary, Terry Gould, President, Kathy Aschenbren- ner, Student Council Repre- sentative. As Juniors the directions of greatness were grow- ing stronger. The all-school plays found juniors with many of the major leads. We also seemed to have fine voices and instrumental abilities as three of our classmates attended Music in May , a re gional music festival. Between plays and concerts, Leon Nutter gained the majority and became class president. Jerry Brown gathered the vice president vote with Earlene Herness as secretary. Lonnie Butler was sgt. at arms, while John Copeland representedus inthe student council. The float We're Coming Alive to Knock Them Dead was constructed by the class in the Herness barn. It was entered in the annual Homecoming pa- rade. The live band blared again for the third time as all danced to the Ho Ho Ho's of the Valley of the jolly Green Giant. We played our part in our first formal dance, Moonlight and Roses. The firstjunior-Senior Prom to be held in the newly built McKenna playshed. Coming back for our lastyear as Seniors, we were now truly in the lead. Class members were student council officers and the presiding officers in clubs. No one could stand in our way as we became the top scholars, musicians, athletes, Thespians, and above all, student leaders. Our Senior year was busy from the start as we s e le cte d our final group of class officers. Terry Gould, president, Mike Fredricks, vice -president, Pat Shattuck, secretary, Robert Olson and Ron Huret, sergeants at arms, and Kathy Aschenbrenner and Jim Henderson, student council representatives. The last Homecoming parade saw our float We 've Got a Tiger On Our Team, and our first Homecoming victory in four years. As the days, weeks, and months passed, we pre- pared ourselves for our moment of glory as the details were worked out for graduation. Between the plan- ning of graduation, we found time to sponsor our class dance and Junior-Senior Prom. As the tears from sorrow and rejoicing were wiped from our eyes, the mighty Class of '66 gathered for the last time at our senior party after graduation. Facing the world, now we hope the guiding di- rections of our high school years will become the guiding directions in our lives of tomorrow. TORNADO ANNUAL STAFF Dave Steggell, Lorraine Dickerson, Kathy Lynne, jim Siggelkow The purpose of the annual staff is to produce the annual Tornado Yearbook. It is composed of two co -editors , an art editor, business manager, two photo- graphers , two S e n io r representatives, two junior representatives, and an ad- visor. I-Iarta Studio takes all pictures and p ro duc e s them free of charge for the annual. The annual consumes many long and tiring hours, but it is all very worth- while. Part of it is drawing layouts, gettingpictures taken, arranging pages, typ in g , and trying to meet deadlines which seem to approach all too quickly. Finances for the yearbook come from ads sold by a group of seniors who go into the surrounding areas of Yelm, Olympia , Lacy, Lakewood, and Tacoma each year. Miss Fairbanks advises for the pub- lication of the yearbook. Lorraine Dickerson and Kathy Lynne we Miss Fairbanks Advisor Annual Editors EDITO RS Future journalists of Yelm high school put their utmost efforts forward to publish the school newspa- per, the TORNADO NEWS. The paper is a member of the Pacific Slope School Press and is distributed to the entire student body every two weeks. The purpose of the school newspaper is to serve as a communications device. It acts as an informa- tion center for every student. It p ro mo te s school spirit and it acts as the leader of student ideals. Co -editors for the year were jerry Cowl es and Suzie Rochester. S e rvin g as the statistics -minded sports editor was Walt Coffel. Miss Eugenia Fairbanks, journalism instructor, advised the students in their publications. A girl is qualified for office as a junior. The purpose of the office girls is to assist stu- dents that come into the office. They also pick up attendence slips from each room each period and register each absent studenton the daily ab- sentee summary sheet. Besides marking the attendence, the girls are kept busy filing, answering the telephone, and running off tests for the teachers. Since a credit is not given, most of these students must give up the ir study halls. As their reward they are given a free lunch. The main job, of course, is to check books out to the students and enter the book on the student's card, showing an accurate list of what he has checked out. In order to work in the library, a student must learn the location of all the important tools of the library. The job of being a librarian in high school can have many advantages in later life. jobs in the modern age require many of the functions of a librarian and a work- ing knowledge of libraries. The discipline of keeping things inorder, filing correctly, and workin g with others is beneficial to anyone. It is the story of Helen Keller, a blind deaf mute, and the open- ing of anew world for her--a world of comprehension. Not only is it a story of Helen, but a story of her great teacher, Anne Sullivan . Anne herself had known the frus- tration of blindness, Through patience and determination, the defiant Helen is transformed from an animal-like beast to a human being. Undaunted, this meager group struggled to understand this new phase of learning. Some students came up with the idea that the teachers were finally ganging up on the pupils. They soon decided that this was not the case as they learned of the difficulties of this type of teaching. By discussing their problems with the teachers , they began to solve them one by one. Driver's Education and Physical Education Were no longer separate classes. They had been combined because Driver's Education used to be six weeks of class and thirty Weeks of study hall. When they were teamed up, the Sophomores had six weeks of Driver Education and thirty weeks of P.E, with an extra class period. The Sophomores now can carry seven solids and a study hall. They won the first prize for their float which was made in the shape of a huge beanie. The Freshmen found, as they entered their class- rooms, that high school was work. The challenges of biology and Washington history faced them but they showed they would do their best. Theold familiar classes, English, physical education, and math, seemed changed by the hurry flurry of the four minute bells. They also found out that lockers open better when one uses the right combination.
