ia 1-.ei WM, ,,.1 Waals 'H Freshmen Bewilderment best describes a fresh- man's life at Yelm High for the first few days. The continual hustle of up- perclassmen, the maze of new faces, and the difficulty in finding the correct rooms, all combine to make a fresh- man's first week rather hectic. Finally, though, things work into a routine, new friends are met, programs are stabilized and the freshmen find themselves full-fledged Yl-IS'ers. Sophomores The comedy of wandering lost through the halls is now in the past as the sopho- mores begin a new year. They have taken another step up the ladder of life. . .the first steps have already been taken but two years re- main before them at Yelm, that are as yet unexplored. uniors The return of the Juniors in the fall brings a new sense of independence but also waiting for them are many jobs and responsibilities. Although enjoying the present they must prepare for the future with the tests which challenge both their knowledge and understanding. Seniors It is the beginning of the end when orders for caps and gowns and announce- ments are taken, when graduation pic- tures are given out and thoughts are turnedto. . .graduation. . .one ofthe most important events in our lives. And yet, it is not the end but a beginning, for college, jobs, and marriage lie ahead.

SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS R . Muriel Pierce, Secretary, Doug Brewster, Treasurer, Tom Turner, President, Sterling jones, Vice President, Dennis Manley, Sergeant-at-Arms, Marilyn Mosman, Student Council Representative, Ken Austin, Student Council Representative We Challenge the World . . . FRESHMEN YEAR: Noted for being the peppiest class to ever enter high school, we charged into every activity and contest the school had to offer, emerging with a win nearly every time. We hully-gullied with pointed shoes, A skirts, and matching mohair sweater at our Freshmen dance Century 21 , and delighted in covering our Pee Chees with names. When the town added the dog foodplant and Joh.nson's corner Grocery, we added to our fads: ratted hair, pale lipstick, and different colored fingernail polish. SOPHOMORE YEAR: The first Homecoming Parade in the history ofYelm was a huge success with our Sophomore float walking away with top honors. The class danced the Monster Mash with the boys in short pegged pants and the girls wearing cutoffs and sweat-shirts with tenny runners to match. At our class dance, Father Time Frolics , the boys were seen wearing slim ties, round tie tacks and blazers. Everyday wear for the girls slanted towards wrap -arotuid skirts and shifts. JUNIOR YEA R: Do you remember the elephant jokes ? This is one that stumped many teachers: O. Why did the elephant wear red tenny runners ? A. Because his white tenny runners were dirty. ln their turtle -necked T-shirts the boys called each other Clyde, Clod, Fern, and Ratfink as they passed each other in the hall. Pizza and Coke was gooder, neater, and all thater with ski jackets the thing. Highlighting our junior year was our junior-Senior ball, Isle of Capri . In skirts with suspenders, and stacked heels the girls with their dates went to Burger jim's--the first drive -in cafe ever to open in Yelm--and swapped more elephant jokes. Our junior year ended progressively with a new bank in Yelm and construction on the new buildings begun. SENIOR YEAR: We began our Senior year with new spirit which could only mean a season of victory for our foot- ball team who rated a second place standing in the League. Having such fads as: Beatlemania, big bows, flavored lipstick, textured nylons, the jerk , and such express- ions as: too bad, you lose, bad scene, raunchy, and kabash, our senior year was called to an end. With all those memories behind us, we challenge the world to defeat a class such as this. by Karen Taylor and Ruby Hull
