CELIIINDC l AMONG 0UR SOUVENIRS l Leaving grade school in the spring of '57, the class of '61 joyfully entered the halls of dear ol' Yelm High. Figuring the upper ciassmen needed to be cheered up a bit, the 64 new freshmen brought with them many fads and lots of fun, 'Elvis' was the freshmen favorite and his greatest hit was Hound Dog. The theme of the Freshmen dance was Deep Purple, a favorite song of the freshmen. Class officers included, President, Dave Kinney, Vice President, Eddie Heath, Secretary-Treasurer, Gail Edwards, and Sergeant at Arms, Bob Koeppen. The highest point of the year was when Yelm won the State 'B' basketball championship at Spokane. The next year, in came the Sophomores with 'thula hoops. Sack dresses were the rage and the Sophomores felt more in the swing of things with their 'Hop' titled Mardi Gras. Some of the songs they danced to were Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, by the Platters, Love me Tender by Elvis Presly, and t'Autumn Leaves. The Russian's Sputnik made its appearance in 1958. This was the first satellite ever to successfully orbit the earth. Then there was the clothing drive that the Sophomores almost won. They claim that they would have won, except the Seniors stole all their clothes. We chose Dave Kinney to lead us as President. His helpers were Don Hansen, Vice President, Gail Edwards, Secretary, and Mike Walker, Sergeant at Arms. Ah, finally upperclassmen! As Juniors, the class was 'like c o o I man. Leotards and beatniks along with hayrides and the Junior Prom kept this class alive. The Prom, Moonlight and Roses, was a a success. Music was provided by the Midnight Sons. Running competition to the Wailers were the Knighthawks, composed of Walt Bowen, drums, Chub Coulter, guitar, Dave Rogers, guitar, and Jack Butler, sax. All the good shows came on TV in '59, among the favorites were Peter Gunn, Maverick, and of course t'Huckleberry Hound. The class officers elected for this year were: President, Larry Schorno, Vice President, Mike Walker, Secretary, Elsie Sherman, and Dan Longmire, Sergeant at Arms. Pink Champagne was the theme of the Senior Ball. It was held December 10 in the cafeteria. By Christmas time, graduation excitement was in the air. The commencement speakers chosen were Elsie Sherman, John Pierce, Eugene Kulan, Kent lsenburg, and Karen Morris. Out of the 49 students graduating from Yelm High, 21 of them began their school career at Yelm Grade School. They are: Marilyn Peoples, Dan Longmire, Karen Morris, Arline Meyer, Carol Brand, Gail Edwards, John Pierce, Orrin Fox, Mary Games, Bob Halstead, Jim Raab, Irene Robison, Larry Henderson, Elsie Sherman, David Kinney, Linda Stewart, Carol Triplett, Bob Koeppen, and Betty Vancil. Some favorites of the Seniors this year were: the spine-chilling movie, Psycho, a TV program called Hawaiian Eye, and all the special privileges the seniors got for just being seniors. The sad and the glad came to school November 9, 1960, the day after the Presidential elections. Kennedy won over Nixon by a very small popular vote. At last the great day came. On May 26, 1961, 49 seniors marched down the aisle of the Yelm High School gymnasium, to receive their diplomas. And thus ends the history of that great class of 1961. l l Don Hansen, Vice President, Larry Schorno, Pres- ident, Elsie Sherman, Secretary, Ken Laughlin, Sergeant at Arms. At times, particularly in the mud, the TORNADOES were impressive, .but the team had one serious weakness which hampered them during the entire season. This weakness was a lack of SPEED. The TORNADOES could put up a fierce goal line defense only to have opposing halfbacks break away for long runs to win the ball game. Some of YeIm's finest moments were highlighted by rugged line play. Tackle Rick Raab and guard Bob Koeppen were standouts in this veteran line. Newcomers such as Jim Spencer and George Carl give the TORNADOES hope for a better season in 1961.
