Ci- 11.1 cdldfby Along with fifty-three excited and anxious Freshmen, I remember that sunny day in 1954 when I first entered Yelm Highschool to begin another phase of education. To lead us through our first year, we chose Gary Beggs, President, Dave Wolf, Secretary, Al Schorno, Vice President, Ron Gallup, Sergeant-at-arms. l'll never forget UTornado Week and initiation which resulted in fun and excitement for everyone. We sponsored Autumn Serenade as our first dance. Beginning our Sophomore year with thirty-nine, I felt more mature and ready for another big year. Dancing Under The Stars was the theme for our Sophomore Hop. We also sponsored the Julius Ceasar movie to raise money. Class officers were Ron Gallup, President, Barrie Wilcox, Vice President, Hap Pollard, Secretary. Dave Wolf and Connie Raab received the Best Citizenship Awards bringing distinction to our class. Time flew by and soon I was a Junior and considered an upperclassman. The selected officers were Dave Wolf, President, Jim Pierson, Vice President, June Kaufman, Secretary, Guy Sherman, Sergeant- at-arms. Our Junior Prom, White Christmas and class play t'Beauty and the Beef were successful events of the year. Again the Best Citizenship Awards went to members of our class, Dave Wolf and Donna Schneider. Highlighting the Senior year was the Senior Ball and Homecoming Dance combined, 'tChristmas Fanta- sy . Karen Hull and Dave Wolf reigned for the occasion with Connie Raab, Al Heath, Lynda Averill, Dic Parker, Linda Turner and Barrie Wilcox as attendants. The class play, 'tDrums of Death , held intrigue and mystery for the sixteen actors and actresses as well as the audience. l'll always remember the many honors won by the Senior class and the student body during 1957-58. As a class we won the world cloth- ing drive in class competition. Connie Raab won the county D.A. R. Award for Yelm. Donna Schneider and Connie Raab represented Yelm at the All-State Music Festival in Yakima. F.F.A. honors were re- ceived by Greg McKown when he was elected president of the Yelm Chapter and president of the Parlia- mentary Procedure Team which placed honors in sub-sub-district, sub-district, and district debate tourn- aments. He also received the State Farmer degree and was chosen Star Farmer by the Yelm F.F.A. Chapter. Linda Turner, Karen Hull, Vonda Florek, and June Kaufman were active in Journalism work and attended the Pacific Slope Press Conferences in Seattle. Never was there so much excitement at Yelm as when our basketball team won co-championship of the West Centeral League, first place in district and first place in the Washington State UB Tournament at Spokane. Dave Wolf was selected on the all-state basketball team and Al Heath received Honorable Men- tion. Senior playing their last game were Mike Gould, Garry Beggs, Dave Wolf, Barrie Wilcox, and Al Heath. Ten Seniors made honor roll ratings and were inducted into Honor Society. They were Gary Beggs, Karen Hull, Ray Jones, June Kaufman, Connie Raab, Donna Schneider, Linda Turner, Dave Wolf, Margaret Wright and Marilyn Wright. Leaders for the year were Donna Schneider, President, Guy Sherman, Vice President, Karen Hull, Secretary, Dic Parker, Sergeant-at-arms. Karen Hull edited the Tornado News and Carol Potts and Connie Raab were annual editors. Dave Wolf, Gary Beggs, Marilyn Wright, Margaret Wright, Karen Hull, June Kaufman, Lynda Averill attended Yelm schools for twelve years. On May 29th after four memory filled years of hard work, numerous activities, and lasting friendships, forty-two seniors received diplomas. The future looked bright and I was proud to say, l'm a graduate of Yelm High school, class of 1958. 9 LYNDA IRENE AVERILL CARRIE G. BALCH CAROL MARGARET BAYNE Diamonds are a girl's best friend. Ju net Jewell goaijqe, Qbllif aa ln 1957 Cinderella Tornado team captured third place in the State B Tournament, by turning in fine team play in District and State Tournaments. ln 1958 the Tornados were expected to repeat their triumph of the previous season and the pressure was on from the very beginning. Members of the team had no intention of settling for third place in 1958. However the State Tournament looked a long way off when Yelm lost to Tenino in a pre season non- league game at Tenino. Shaken by this unexpected defeat the Tornados realized the job that was ahead and buckled down to defeat Bethel in the first conference league tilt. Picking up steam they won their next two games from lllloclips and Tenino, both non-conference. The Tornados finished the first half of the season tied for the League lead with a 6-1 record. A low point in this period was the loss by one point to Peninsula. Starting the second half of the season the Tornados suffered a 6 point loss to Bethel which really built up the pressure, since this gave Yelm a second place tie with Orting. Due to classification of A and B schools it was necessary that Yelm place higher than Orting in order to gain a berth in the District Tournament. After their loss to Bethel, the Tornados finished out the season with twelve straight winsg the loss of any one of these could have spelled disaster. High moments in the second round came with victories over Peninsula and Orting, which made Yelm co-champions of the West Central League. ln District Tournament play the Tornados chalked up one of the highest scores of the year in defeating Neah Bay 96-61. ln the second District game Yelm downed a determined Tolt team to win the tournament and a right to go to State. The Tornados went to Spokane with an all possessing driving aim. After four closely contested encounters the Tornados accomplished this purpose. Good team work was shown in the 3 point victories over Odessa and Valley. ln the semi-finals the Tornados revenged the 1957 loss to highly rated Darrington by defeating them 55 to 51. The final game saw a 48 to 41 victory over Brewster and the State B Cham- pionship. One of the best defensive records in the State, along with the fine team work helped the Tornados attain success. Coach Bill Ward said 'tl think the keys to our success this year were the individual hard work and team effort, An opinion poll of the team would reveal only praise and credit to Coach Ward as the real t'key to the Tornado success. Yelm was fortunate in having two members of the team hominated for all State honors: David Wolf and Alfred Heath. Gary Beggs was selected lVlr. Hustler of the 1957 -58 season. Loyal Yelm fans would have placed ten tornados on the All-State team. 54 e t ,gm.A-ttfU,-1,5W,qffffwfwt VALVAN M,e,tm.mmwmW, , , ,,,. ,,.. , , . ,.1., ,.. m,t,,-WW , , . . The members of Wesleyan Guild were hostesses to the twenty girls who attended. The hall was beautifully decorated with potted red geraniums and candlelight. Tea, cookies and after dinner mints were served during which the girls and Guild members had an opportunity to meet each other. The program consisted of two solos by Mrs. Grinde, Scarlet Ribbons and 'tFour Ducks on a Pond . Mrs. Truman Wilcox gave an inspirational message about service and life after high school Mrs. Marshall closed the evening with devotions and the following poem: For a Child, Leaving Go now: I shall open the door for you. Everything is in store for you. There is a room beyond this room, beyond the circle of my arms and voice, a further warmth, a further sound. Rejoice: the world, my Sweet, like any other womb, is round! Go now: you are ready to go. l know - leavings are lonely. But look: going is only a larger kind of living, and l swear: tomorrow will be better. fTake your sweater.l Nothing stays: the ways of love are always moving, loving itself is a growing being as spreading as pain. Go now, while there is still light for seeing. CTake your rubbers. lt might rain.D Good-by now: and remember what l've said to you: Be nice to the man who asks you in, he loves you, too. When he gives you a gift, smile, say thank you, even send a card. CLittle things like that makes life less hard? Come on now: nothing is really so bad. Think of what you've had: it's all there - among your packed belongings: the rightings and wrongings of years. No - please. No tears. You are Old Enough, the time to leave is how old Old is CDrink lots of orange Juice. You know how common the cold is.J Go now: only in part will l be left behind. We have shared one heart and one mind. No one ever goes alone through any door. Yes, yes - I shall miss you l CWait. Class officers who helped make graduation arrangements and made it one of our fondest memories were Donna Schneider, President, Guy Sherman, Vice Pres- ident, Karen Hull, Secretary - Treasurerg and Dic Parker Sergeant-at-arms. Despite the lightning and loud claps of thunder and a sudden fire in the com- munity, the exercise proved to be very successful and a happy event for all. Have a purpose in life, and having it, throw into your work such strength of mind and muscle as God has given you. With this motto in our minds, we the graduates of 1958 are prepared to enter out prospective phases of life. Out of this class will come teachers, doctors, lawyers, homemakers and familys. Never will we forget the students or faculty at Yelm High School and we say thank-you for the wonderful friendships and memories established. l .Y ' 1 L N 66 Commencemeni speakers, left to right: Connie Raab, Donna Scheider, Karen Hull, David Wolf and Gary Beggs. By 11:30 P.M., May 29, the weather had quited and thirty-five alumni board- ed the school bus and headed for Tacoma for a two hour cruise on Puget Sound on board the Gallant Lady Chaperones for the event were Mr. and Mrs. Bob Sherman, Mr. and Mrs. Milo Schneider and Mr. and Mrs. Glen Hull. Snacks were prepared by the chaperones and a good time was had by all. After the cruise, we headed for College of Puget Sound and the indoor, heated, swimming pool where we stayed until 5:00 A.M. Tired but in gay spirits, the alumni headed home to attend a breakfast given by our parents in the Scout Cabin. The all-night party could not have been possible without our parents and we thank you for giving us such a memory filled evening. Incidents we remember about our party: Remember all the singing and noise on the bus and how quiet it was on the way home, except for a few characters who kept everybody awake, Donna Schneider's shoes, Connie Raab taking flash pic- tures, just plain Mike Gould, graduation kisses, all the food on the cruise, the chaperones with flashlights looking forpop bottles, the janitor in the girls dress- ing room the hair dryers in the dressing room, our parents' reception when we arrived home, the delicious breakfast, and sleeping all day Friday '? ? ? 7 We really had a 'lball , and we had more fun and l'Boy, l'll never forget tonight were a few coments made, proving that everyone had fun and we hope that it will be a tradition in Yelm High School in years to come. 71 It was a refreshing swim in the heated pool at the College of Puget Sound We're no angels, What a happy happy feeling- Don't frown Marilyn, it was worth staying UD all night fOr- A tired but happy bunch heading for home What's so fascinating, Carol? Donna Schneider, school photographer and Don Miller of Yelm co- operated to take activity shots.Charles Gray, of McKenna, took all of the pictures for our graduation pages. Special thanks goes to Bill Knight of the Daily Olympian. He not only gave the Yelm Tornados numerous write ups through out the basketball season and state tournament, but he also appeared at a public reception for the team and gave us pictures to use for the annual. Due to the co-operation from the Yelm merchants and businesses the annual was financed greatly by ads which they purchased. Of course, this annual could not have existed without staff members. Cheryl Newland, Wanda Eide and Mary Waters were ourJunior Representatives and helped us greatly. David Wolf and Guy Sherman helped with the selling of Ads. Linda Turner and June Kaufman were the art editors. Special appreciation goes to the faculty of Yelm High School for their patient help and understanding. We especially thank Miss Fairbanks, our advisor, for her help and co-operation during the year. Instead of the annual coming out in the Spring as was the practice previous to this year, it will arrive at Yelm High School this fali. As this annual goes to press it is our hope that the championships established in 1958 will never be forgotten. We present this record for the year 1958 saying Thank you to everyone.
