We must make the same order of radical change in our attiude towards national defense. We must measure our educational effort not by what it would be easy and convenient to do, but by what it is necessary to do in order that our nation may survive and flourish. For if in the crucial years which are coming, our people remain as unprepared as they are for their responsibilities and their mission, they may not be equal to the challenge, and if they do not succeed, they may never have a second chance in order to try againf' ERNEST E. NEWLAND Superintendent of Yelm Schools University of Washington '4We live in an age of cooperative enterprise, which requires that one work effectively and happily with others. The impression one makes on others is therefore important to his success and advance- ment. MARSHALL Advisor O Born in the years '38 and '39, the class of 1956 just missed being classed as war babies. Nineteen forty-four found this group of boys and girls starting their education. and eight years, effort promoted them to the next step. With the years of grade school past, the year of 1952 found sixty-one excited and anxious freshmen hurrying through the doors of Yelm Hi. We adjusted ourselves quickly to our new enviroment. We chose Gene Coulter class president. We held our first dance that year. Carrying on from the freshman year, forty-three sophomores enrolled. Our selected leader was Tom Murray. Spring Frolic was the theme chosen for the Sophomore Hop. Dick Wood joined our group during the middle of the year. The junior year was a busy one for all. Charlene McLaughlin presided over our class meetings. Winter Wonderland was the theme carried out for decorating our Prom. Ann Prince, Gerald Riedl, and JoAnn Cullens were among those who helped with the preparations for the occasion. Kathy Welch reigned queen for the evening. The class play Crazy But Cute was cancelled. We also found ourselves busy selling pop to raise money for our annual. Our group gained a new member, Sharon Prince. After twelve years of hard work the class of '56 had thirty-four survivors to reecive diplomas. Ed Harrison was our capable leader. As our first enterprise we produced the play Act Your Age. The cast consisted of Mary Radabaugh, Kathy Robinson, Rich- ard Schneider, Margaret Pollard, Gloria Thompson, Carolyn Koeppen, Charles Dunham and Elsie Martin. We also produced the combination, Senior Ball and Homecoming Danceg both the play and dance were successful. Eva Baker edited the school paper with Dawn Donaldson assisting her. Christine Heath and Gary Smith supervised the annual. A few of the helpers were .loyce Longmire, Winona Story, Margaret Englund, Carol Lowery and Alice Riedl. Germaine Wilcox joined us again to complete her last year withus. Some of those who attended Yelm School for twelve years were .lim Jewell, Treva Buck, Darlene Cullens, Don Ferguson, John Ismay and Charlotte Noffsinger. 7 EVA MYRTLE BAKER 'gHave you finished your 5t0ry?u Block Y 1,2,3,43 Thespian 1,2Q Tennis Team 3,43 Press Club 3, 43 Tornado News Editor 43 Honor Society 3g Annual Staff 4g Class Dance Comm. 1,2,3.43 Photo Club 2.3.43 M Sz D Banquet Comm. 1.2,3,43 Perfect Attend- ance 1,2,3,4. We were proud of team not only because of their fine athletic ability, but also their display of good sportsmanship. As the senior basketball players finish game this year we wonder what the next year will be without them. But we see the material of a successful team for the coming years in those who have gained experience this year. The players, the cheer leaders and the rooters will remember 1956 as a most exciting year in basketball. 38 Left to Righzg Coach Groshongg George Hobartg Lyle Worrag Jim Piersonq Mike Gouldg Philip Peoples: Dennis Kinneyg Lawrence Kellyg Barrie Wilcoxg Ernie Bunnellg Terry Wright, Coach Tomlinson Managersg Raymond Wilson and Dick Brown 39 - f 35221 Searle ff: ,ignggsgigngk ,mme LEE ai 21 . nsiiezgdfm, ,,,sSfwmfeQw,. . iwgggg lai me , ., .... 12 ' 7 , A E.
