At one point in the first performance a terrible discord was heard and the man- ager noticed that the local musicians were playing at least half a tone lower than the key maintained by the company's orches- tra. What's the matter? , whispered the manager to the local orchestra's leader. Your men are playing half a tone lower than the others!
