It seems like a long time ago when we first started in September, I945, a little frightened and a little awed by our first teachers, but in reality the years have flown. We finished the sixth grade in the old grammar school then took our first big step when we moved up to the high school for iunior high. Most of us graduated from the eighth grade and then we were actually Freshmen in high school. Our biggest excitement that year was the fire which came during the Christmas holidays. lt destroyed part of the school but left our Latin books intact. We were sophomores next and we really began this year to take an active part in school activities, clubs, and sports. Our iunior year was the best yet. The highlight was our Junior-Senior party when everyone in costume came to the gym which was disguised as gay old New Or- leans at Mardi Gras. Vincent emceed the program. Of course our senior year was the greatest. We really knew we had made it when we received our senior rings. Our biggest concern was to make money for our trip. Making footballs and rah-rahs on Thursday nights was fun and helped our treasury too. The Christmas card and magazine sales, after-the-game dances, and the senior play also helped the fund. We finally reached our ambition, New Or- leans, and it was all we had hoped for. Parties were the order of the day during the spring and before we knew it Class Day came and then the night we had waited for for twelve years-graduation. We donned our caps and gowns realizing that it was all over too soon and then blink- ing back the tears we received our diplomas and bid our high school careers and happiest days farewell. r K F 3 XZ' . Ms '56 DVC CHAMPIONS SEASON SUMMARY As the final whistle blew sounding the end of the past season's clash with West Tallahatchie at Greenwood, the Yazoo City Indians had pushed themselves to the top of the DVC ladder. Being undefeated, untied, and scored on only twice in con- ference competition, the Indians are well-worthy of being champions of the Delta Valley Conference for 1956. The DVC Trophy proves the fact that the Braves had an extremely fine season. Although the team was very well rounded in ability, the record shows tremendous defensive talent. Leland was the only Delta Valley team that crossed the goal in regular conference play. Only three other teams scored and only one made more than one touchdown. The total points against the locals amounted to thirty-nine for an eleven-game schedule. On the other hand the offensive power made itself known. Two hundred and thirty-eight points were chalked up for the Indians who scored on all teams but Vicksburg. The backfield contained two All DVC members and the line, one. The line also had two second team All DVC players and two who gained honorable mention ratings. There were nine senior lettermen: B. Barrier, Kenneth Netherland, Charles Rey- nolds, Buddy Moses, Vincent Vincent, Kelly Collins, David Milner, Pepper Gulledge, and Dan Pugh. The nine returning lettermen will be William Barbour, Hollis McCoy, Robert Martin, Larry Stevens, Billy Francis, Chris Gerrard, Travis Powell, Bobby Smith, and William Powell. J SEASON REVIEW . , Although the lndiansldid not show an impressive record they had a surprisingly good Team. The win and loss column shows T3-7, the larger being the losses. On the' other hand, the quintet led Belzoni for three quarters in the semi-finals of the DVC Tournament. The height of the opposing team wore the locals down and Belzoni and then went on to win the tourney. The lettermen for the Indians are: Kenneth Netherland, Buddy Moses, Bobby Smith, Charles Reynolds, Pepper Gulledge, Johnie Nesbit, Malcolm West, Buck Harris, Buddy Dew, and Morris Richards, Manager. This will leave Bobby Smith as the only returning letterman for next year. 1 5.7 . if ' J V? M I , - fe J v Q as 5? SEASON SUMMARY The Yazoo sextet had another of the fine seasons which seem to be a tradition of the team. They have a record of T4 wins and 7 losses in the games already played and they still have the District 6 Tournament to participate in which will be held after our deadline. With their three All-DVC players the lndianettes reached the finals in the Delta Valley Tournament but were defeated by Charleston. The record alone could make a successful season but the tournament play shows the sextet as outstanding. BASEBALL In the T956 season the lndian's baseball team won games for the first time in two years. Under Coach Ralph Stutts the team was victorious over each team on the schedule but also was defeated by each of them. There were seven returning lettermen which formed a well-experienced nucleus for a much improved team over last year's. With the lettermen plus several new members the team fielded a starting lineup composed of: Billy Kennedy, pitcher, Buddy Dew, catcher, Buddy Moses, first base, Marion Falkner, second base, Kenneth Netherland, shortstop, Pepper Gullege, third base, and Richard Mansfield, Joe Allen Powell, and Charles Reynolds in the outfield. The schedule was composed of Canton, Murrah, Vicksburg, and Forest Hill. All provided top competi- tion and wins were not easy for the Indians. Every member on the team was awarded a letter. They were Billy Kennedy, Kenneth Netherland, Buddy Dew, Buddy Moses, Marion Falkner, Charles Reynolds, Buck Harris, Travis Powell, Richard Mansfield, B.
