Text from Pages 1 - 140 of the 1955 volume:

The imprint that our Alma Mater has made upon the minds and hearts of its students will never be lost. But it is possible that the details of our school activities and the remembrance of our school associates may be dimmed by the years. We, the Mingo Chito Staff, have earnestly striven to produce for you, in picture and in word, not only popular and accurate recordings of our happy student days, but also those whose melody will linger on. May this annual be to you a treasured record album . . . one which will bring real enjoyment now and warm memories in the days that lie ahead. She has been more than a teacher. She has been a wise counselor and an understanding friend. She has given to us encouragement, praise and helpful criticism when most needed. She has instilled in us a true appreciation of our language and literature, which will remain with us throughout our lives. Because she is dear to our hearts and to those of the countless students who have known her through the years, we affectionately dedicate the 1954-1955 Mingo Chito to MRS. J. W. Mississippi They do me wrong who say I come no more When once I knock and fail to find you in; For every day I stand outside your door, And bid you wake, and rise to fight and win, Opportunity—Walter Malone Graduation from high school will soon usher you into another epoch of your life ... a period of wider horizons and more mature objectives. You will experience many failures and disappointments while striving to achieve the objectives of purposeful living, which the aimless wanderer will not have because he is not going anywhere, anyway. The beautiful poem Opportunity inspires you to rise above failures and disappoint- ments, to feel stronger for the day's work and superior to the day's faults and failures, and to fight again, to achieve the lofty goals and ideals of a constructive life. I congratulate you on the splendid job you have done in publishing this fine edition of the MINGO CHITO. May the efficiency and energy which you have demonstrated in this excellent publication, and may the loyalty and fidelity which you have given to all of your activities in Yazoo City High School follow you in the years ahead in the pursuit of happiness and successJ FRED W.v YOUNG Superintendent ‘PxcKCcfrai TfteA cKpe F. Principal YAZOO CITY, MISSISSIPPI Dear Students: We have experienced another successful school year at Yazoo City High - another school year that will go down in our History Book, and be long remembered. It gives me pleasure to congratulate the Mingo Chito Staff, sponsor, and members of the student body for a job well done. This Annual portrays the high spots for the many events which happen throughout the year. A high school yearbook is often the only record one has of his school days - the only record of, and perhaps, the most eventful years of one's life. It is my hope that the educational experiences you have had at Yazoo City High School will be exemplified in promoting the American way of life. Sincerely, Harold C. Kelly Principal MR. STANLEY C. Career Day was one of the most important projects sponsored by the Council. This day wds set aside to help students decide what vocation they would like to choose in later life. School spirit was raised when cheering sections for students were designated at home football and basketball games. Also a well-organized volleyball tourna- ment caused a strong feeling of competition between the various homerooms. The problem of congested traffic in the halls was successfully dealt with by the Student Council. The Southern School Assembly programs, an annual presentation of the Student Council, greatly entertained the student body as a whole. tfctCd-' State FIRST ROW: Dotsie Coleman, Barbara Cline, Betty Ann Miller, Gwen Sim- mons. Sut t H4suf, As another great football season goes on record for the outstanding Yazoo High School team and the smoke of conflict clears, the merits and greatness of this squad can be calculated. The '54 Indians, who were weakened considerably through graduation, proved to be a pleasant surprise to most sports enthusiasts. For the third successive year the Redskins have compiled a brilliant, well respected record. The chief of coaches Doug Hamley, Howard Woods and Zerk Wilson finished the gridiron year with a 8-2-1 record. In the process they captured a tie for the District 6 title and placed third in the powerful Delta Valley Conference after a playoff loss to the Winona Tigers. In compiling this respected record the Red and Black defeated teams from Drew, Indianola, Belzonia, Cleveland, Catholic High of Memphis, Kosciusko, Crystal Springs, and Louisville in that order. They suffered unfamiliar defeat from Vicksburg and Winona and fought to a deadlock with a surprising team from Canton. The big disappointments of the season came with the loss to Winona in the championship playoff and the tie with Canton on Thanksgiving which kept the Indians from having permanent possession of the silver trophy presented to the winner each year. The Indians placed Bubber Trammell and Burley Smith on the AII-DVC team. James Roberts and Ronnie Smith garnered positions on the second team and Guy Hitt, Bee Barrier, Joe Allen Powell and Howard Fulgham were given honorable mention. The '54 roster was made up of 43 players . 13 seniors, 9 juniors, 15 sophomores, 2 freshmen and 3 eighth graders. Graduating lettermen are: Pickett, Roberts, Ball, Trammell, Hitt, Bryant, Fulgham, Brister, Ivers, Holmes, B. Smith, Burns, and R. Smith. Coach Howard Woods' Yazoo Indians, to this point in the season, hold a 6-9 record and are preparing for the forthcoming District 6A-AA tournament. After a slow start the Quintet finally settled down and with hard work, sports- manship, and teamwork, began showing impressive victories. The Chiefs defeated Indianola (2), Canton, Bentonia, Holly Bluff, and Winona, while absorb- ing defeats from Belzoni, Forest Hill (2), Clinton, Canton, and Holly Bluff. In the Delta Valley Conference match the Chiefs defeated Winona before falling victim to the Belzoni Warriors by the slim margin of five points. Forward Bubba Trammell and center J. B. Barrack were Yazoo's placements on the All- D.V.C. squad. In the individual spotlight, Bubba Trammell and J. B. Barrack, have been the point pacers. Coaches Margaret Hester and Sabin Rush, prolonging the tradition of pro- ducing one of the more dangerous teams in the state, have again established an aggregation of adept girl cagers. The sextet, improving as the season progressed, proved to be a serious threat to all opposition. Stunned by the loss of four graduating starters, who were AII-D.V.C. per- formers, the Indianettes have toppled Holly Bluff, Canton, Indianola (2), Bentonia, Leland, and tied Belzoni. Defeat has been absorbed from Forest Hill twice, Clin- ton, Belzoni, and Cleveland once each. The team, although eliminated in the semifinals of the D.V.C. tournament, placed our girls, Nancy Shackleford, Dotsie Coleman, Ruby Pettigrew, and Irene Williams on the all-D.V.C. squad.
