This girl is chosen from the junior and sen- ior classes. The choice is based on the gir1's beauty, poise, talent, and and her ability to type. Other than the honor she feels upon being selected as sweetheart, she finds she has certain other re- sponsibilities. She assists the of- ficers, participates in the local area sweetheart contest in Pike County, and helps to carry out-the plans for the Father-Son, Mother- Daughter Banquet. The outstanding service that Dianne has contributed to the club had definitely proven to the FFA members that the choice of Dianne for sweetheart was a wise one. , ,V Q. Q, as 'c-if . ,,.1:-1. Competing against a vastly improved Byron team, both the boys and the girls came home victorious. Ad- vancing to the mid-season, the teams went to Manchester to play in the Tri-County Tournament. Although, the girls were not successful, the boys proudly brought home the second place trophy. Bringing even more esteem to Yatesville's basketball squad was the selection of four of our players to the All.-Tourney Team. Later both varsity teams boosted everyone's morale when they traveled to Crawford County to win two second place trophies in the Sub-Region Tournament. Excitement had filled the air, both teams were gradually making their way to the final goal, they were almost at State. Unfortunately, the boys lost to' Milner and Greenville in the Regional Tournament, leaving them with a sea- sonalrecord of 13 wins and 15'losses. The girls, having defeated Meriwether, advanced to the Regional Finals and competed against lvlilner, their arch rival. With excellent coaching and adequate preparations, the girls were sure of success. Determined to win, despite the loss of a key player, our girls did prove victorious. A berth in the State,lTournarnent was assured. In the first game they defeated Putnam County, the second day Duluth felt thefpain of defeat in the Yellow Jacket's sting. Unfortunately, in the Semi-Finals, the girls bowed to the State Champions, Cave Springs. Soon the basketballs were shelved, and Coach Sheets brought out the tennis rackets, baseballs, bats, and track equipment. In tennis, five out of the six member team won second place medals in the region competition. Yatesville competed in the Annual Track Meet at Matthews Field. They successfully captured third place, out of the six schools competing.. One member of the track team represented the school at the State Meet. Combining the pitching and hitting talents of several of last year 's varsity players, the boys' baseball season moved along at afifast clip. Having -secured the region title, Coach Sheets's boys advanced to district. There they proved victorious and were on their way to State. To conclude the athletic program at Yatesville, we feel honored in announcing Coach Sheets's selection as the Coach of the Year for girls' basketball.
