In truth we can only give what we have discovered for ourselves, freely and without intimidation. 3 I To the Class of 1974: Individually and collectively you have excelled in many ways during your tenure at Yarmouth Junior-Senior High School. ' I first met you six years ago when you were seventh graders, and I have watched you changed from that beautifully awkward age to an age of physical and emotional maturity . The changes which you have experienced have been difficult at times , but you have successfully coped with problems which have confronted you and thankfully your optimistic outlook towards life has brought you more moments of happiness than sadness. I have shared so much with you, and each year I have become closer to you. There will be a void in my life next year. I have mentioned excellence , and I can cite example after example of how your class has excelled in scholastics, athletics, citizenship and many other often mentioned areas of concern. But nothing is more important than excelling in your relationships with other people . Most of you have exhibited the human qualities which I admire . Concern for the welfare and hap- piness of others, tolerance of the weaknesses and mistakes of others, and love of the beauty of life characterize your class. I like you, and I will miss you. The key to Coach Felk- er's success was team togetherness and his special formula , FSP. With only three graduating seniors, no jun iors and many enthusiastic underclassmen, a State Championship can't be far off. W s N V 60 t One Monday morning in late August, several girls gathered to begin a memorable field hockey season. As the days passed, more and more girls were attracted to the sport. Conse- quently, we had four teams: a varsity team and three junior varsity teams. As the unusually alluring, new uniforms were passed out, a self-appointed Senior String Cj . v.J was formed . An interesting event of the season was the J . V. game with Bonny Eagle , featuring this string. Sheer determination helped these girls pull off a tie in a shortened period. Of course, the varsity team performed excellently in their new attire . Every team had a fine season - from the var- sity down to the third string junior varsity. FIELD HOCKEY MAINE STATE OCCER CH MP In the summer of 1973 , Yarmouth High was hoping for a dream to come true - The Trip to Rhode Island. However, before we could make this trip, we had several opponents to challenge. First, we had to take home the Triple-C trophy after having lost it last year for the first time in seven years. We achieved this by ending the season with a perfect 14-0 record. All of us were pleased to accomplish this, especially beat- ing our arch-rival Greely, 3-1 and 3-0. With the Triple-C under our belt, we went after the Class B Championship by defeating Winthrop on their field, 6-2. Back home, we entertained a good Lincoln Academy team and defeated them, 4-2. We were now on our way to the state B championship at Orono . We brought home the Class B Championship trophy with a 3-1 victory over Van Buren. Now we were to challenge Scarborough, the A champions, for the overall championship of Maine. This was to be the most important game of the season. This was our most rewarding victory with a 2-O shut-out, and the right to represent Maine in the New Englands. With great honor, we went to Rhode Island carrying a 17-0 record. We lost our first match against the New Hampshire team, 5-4, but only after we had gone down fighting in eight overtime periods. It will always be a game to remember and people will never forget the 1973 team as one of the best teams Yarmouth has ever had . Our thanks to our coach, Mr. Roberts, for his all-out effort and to the cheerleaders and fans for their support. Each individual member of the team showed great skill and effort and therefore proved to be great young men and athletes. BASKETBALL SKI TEAM NORDIC -..W E Ice , rocks, grass and mud did not hinder the dedicated athletes of the Yarmouth Ski Team under the coaching of Bill Richards and the enthusiasm of team captains, Bill Holden and Dick Mowatt. Bob Moose Morse and his cross-country team had an excellent season, setting a new school record. Dick Mowatt won both the Regional and State meets. David Beckelman possesses the record for breaking cross-coun- try skis C7 pairsj. Due to the lack of snow cover on the home jump , the jumping team could jump only in competition. How- ever, this did not suppress the release of their talent. Jumping, being one of the team's stronger events, helped win points during the seasonal and State meets. Thanks to Alan Ward's unfortunate experience, a new pair of jumping skis were donated by Fryeburg Academy. The Alpine team was a grab bag of talent sharpened by regular practice sessions at Sky-Hy. Although the team ran into problems at the State meets, the coach was satisfied with their performances. Dick Mowatt received the ski maestro award for Western Maine Class C . A great disappointment for the team was the broken ankle of last year's ski maestro, Bill Holden, who was not able to compete in any of the four events in the Regional and State meets. Even so , the team finished only four points out of first place in the State meets. Under next year's captain , Jamie Brooks , the ski team has high hopes for a winning season. They performed an early Pops Concert followed by a well-attended Christmas Concert. The well-deserved Exchange Concert was held with Pentucket Regional High School of West Newbury , Massachusetts. All members of the band showed extra effort to make this a successful event. Again this year, the Senior Band performed in the Bands In The Round Concert held at Greely High School and the Large Band Competition in Old Orchard. The school year culminated with the Spring Concert and the Memorial Day Parade in May . Band members would like to express their sincere appreciation to Frank Clark for his expertise and devotion. - 1 x'f Q y as iffifsf .. f t 5- k Q 1? -X 7. ,E k . ' X f gdlg lx' , 5 .f??.'
