I hope that this year's Arickara will always bring back pleasant memories ot your Yankton high school days. There will always be a Younger Generation, and as you folks grow older your station as the Younger Generation will be superseded by another Younger Generation, and no doubt their problems will be similar to yours. Some day you can open this book and recall the 1947 edition of the Younger Generation and see what goals have been attained, what hopes have been fulfil1ed,and how each one of you has progressed in becoming fine citizens of our America. With klndest regards for your future success, I remain, Dear Students and Alumni: Congratulations to you on the 1947 Annual. The conditions appeared to have been very much against you in your endeavor to get the material together for the book. However, through your persistence and the help of your advisers, you have succeeded. As you go through college and through life, you will find that a little of that same old persistence will help you to succeed in any undertaking. Nothing will be just set up for you. It will usually be necessary for you to make your own opportunities and by intelligent planning and persistent effort to capitalize on them. There is no reason why you cannot succeed in any reasonable undertaking. l-Iere's wishing you, and every. Yankton high school student, success and happiness in all your future activities. They selected Paul Smith, Jean Van Epps, and Bette Lee as their officers. When they were sophomores many were chosen as members of prominent high school clubs. Some became book worms since their desire for knowledge increased. The class found good leadership in Wesley Cimpl, Gladys Baade, and Wilma Pond, as their otficers. In their junior year the class was headed by Jean Van Epps, Bob Milliken, and Gladys Baade. Their advisers were Ella Bang and William Thrall. Many activities enlightened the year, namely: the Mardi Gras, the Arlckara Day cele- brations, the junior play, My Cousin From Texas, and the junior-senior prom and banquet. As seniors the class did outstanding work in the field of athletics. Jack Onstott was selected all-conference tackle. Bob Milliken was captain of the Arickara team. The officers of the senior class were Bob Milliken, president, Lyle Reynolds, vice-president: and Louis Nusinson, secretary-treasurer. , The present seniors now give a farewell salute to Yankton high school. They will go through the open door into their respective fields and will take many pleasant memories along. Class Motto: We are the architects of our own destiny. A highlight of the year was the State Press Convention at Brookings. F WCKSAPE STAFF Editors Keeping students informed on school life and giving staff members journalistic experience was the purpose of the Woksape. As had been the custom in previous years, the paper was called the Woksape, a name suggested by Doane Robinson, state historian, when the original issue was published in 1917. Under the direction of Mr. Laurence Wendt, the staff pub- lished 14 papers plus two extra editions. One of these extras was dedicated to the underclassmen' and their activities. Coaches Bob Milliken Captain 9 1 Season of 46 Under the direction of coach Harold G. Hal Meyer, the Yankton Bucks, with only two returning letter- men, finished a highly successful gridiron season with a record of four wins and five losses. The Bucks, with hard-chargin ' back, Bob Milli- ken, and bone-jarring tackle, Jack Onstott, started off the season at Norfolk, Nebraska, where they handed the Panthers a 13-6 setback. The following week, Coach Meyer brought his inexperienced squad back to the Mother City, and the Bucks were smeared 13-0 by the Le Mars Bulldogs in a Hknock- down, drag-out affair. Again the local gridders crossed the Missouri to Bloomfield, Nebraska, where the Yanktonians had an easy time in a 26-0 rout. On October 4, the Bucks entered Eastern South Dakota loop competition at Aberdeen, and the Golden Eagles downed the visitors 39-0 on a rain-soaked field. On October 11, with Arickara day spirit in their blood, the Bucks smashed a stubborn Madison Bulldog eleven 12-7 and rounded out the day's festivities. Once again the Meyersmen journeyed to Northern South Dakota, and the Brookings Bobcats walloped the invaders 40-6. Still nursing bruises they traveled to battle their arch rivals, the Vermillion Tanagers, but the home team welcomed the Bucks with a 20-6 beating. The Watertown Arrows came to Yankton- on No- vember 2, and the Yankton gridders downed the Arrows 19-7. With a four and four record, the Bucks put the Little Brown Jug at stake, and the Mitchell Kernels did their share by mastering the Bucks 19-0 in the season's finals. In the nine contests, the Bucks scored 82 tallies compared to their opponents 151. Page 57 Chuck Burke End Page 58 Wal! Little Bucks' Season Under the watchful eye of Coach George Bauer the B squad football team completed a successful season with three wins, two losses, and one tie. The Little Bucks, who played good scrappy football, opened the season by battling the Hurley Bulldogs to a scoreless tieg following this, their alertness gave them a 12-0 victory over the Vermillion B squad. On a muddy field, the Tyndall Panthers subdued the scrappy B gridders 22-0. It was a top-notch, power-packed, Scotland eleven, that gave the Little Bucks their second defeat in a 44-0 performance. Bauer's spirited bunch came back to sock the tough Springfield Trojans 6-0 in what was perhaps their best showing of the season. Climaxing a tough schedule the B squad finished the season by rolling over Viborg 7-0. Vernon Gleich, a hard-charging, speedy back, was chosen honorary captain by his team mates.
