W ACADEMICSIS Math And English The English and Math Depart- ments underwent many new changes last year. One major change was the addition of two new teachers. Mrs. Garnick taught English while Mr. Fodge headed up the Algebra and Con- sumer Math section. Mrs. Staebler student taught in the fall in English. Another new change was a class called Advanced Englishg this was taught by Mr. Stiff. In September the Advanced English class went to Ashland for the Shakesperian festival. Marcia Garrick was the teacher added to the staff. Becky Lowe student taught the 3rd nine weeks. General science was re- quired for freshmen and health was made a junior or senior requirement. A. T. Typing, Shorthand, and Steno-Clerical Lab were taught by Mr. Kimurag Personal Finance, Bookkeeping, and Accounting Lab by Mr. Barnett. Alternatives, as taught by Mr. Heuberger, offered 12 week G. E. A resource room was a new addition to Y-C. Here, students learned the basic skills: reading, math, and spelling. Students were also taught study skills to help them in other classes. The Instructional Materials Center, kept in order by Mrs. Gorne and her aide Mrs. Jackson, provided many services such as film strips and file pictures. In the woodshop students were able to make Water skis, skateboards and other laminated items as well as the traditional projects. In the autoshop the greatest change was the largest classes in Y-C historyg this was due to the addition of another work- bench that was added during the summer. ACADEMICS! 13 Physical Education Vocational Agriculture Co. Ed. classes this year Went golfing several times in McMinnville. Some of the P. E. participants also enjoyed bowling and biking when it wasn't raining. Regular P. Ag department. Other classes were more metal oriented, and had more types of welding that weren't offered last year. The students were able to work on any project they desired as long as the project was completed in class. 3j Hope you can catch it. Frosh boys play basketball for fun, exercise, and competition. 4j The green house is a new addition to the Vo. Ag. Department. Kevin Thayer enjoys tall-cing to his plants. The course was called options, a study of Women's roles in our community. ADBGCI The Y-C Chorus held its Christmas con- cert. They also set up a scholarship for the outstanding chorus student. The ensemble made trips to league schools, held a pop concert, and sang for the Lions Club. Chorus and ensemble were directed by Kathy Koch. Martha Van Cleave was the sponsor for the Bible Club. The group went to see the play Godspell. They also held a spaghetti dinner in February. Their meetings were held Weekly. lk, Ls, xl: The band was directed by Bob Yonker who is a member of the Salem Wind En- semble. The band held an exchange as- sembly and participated in the annual band contest in April. Mr. Yonker felt the positive attitude of the members was the key to the band's success this year. CLUBSIZ1 'Q Newspaper, Student Council lj Y-C Expression editors Tami Miller and Rachel Hampton pub- lished 17 editions during the school year which covered both school and community news. Copies were distributed to boxholders in Gaston, Carlton, and Yamhill as well as to students. At the 1978 Mt. Hood Community College Mass Media Competition held in February, the newspaper received five awards and 4th place in sweepstakes for AA schools. ln April the staff learned that the Columbia Scholastic Press Association awarded the newspaper lst place in its annual newspaper fundamentals contest. Out of a pos- sible 1,000 points, the Y-C Expression received 878 points. NEWSPAPER STAFF--FRONT ROW: Tami Miller, Mrs. Dillin, Rachel Hampton. Student Council organized Parent- Student Swap Day, and sponsored 3 live band dances during the year. Bleachers were purchased for the 11-ack and baseball fields. They voted to have a football rally. They also purchased a letter sweater for exchange student Kristin Rikter Svendsen. Advertising sales in- creased considerably and this year's book sold more copies than any other Y-C annual. Besides working on the yearbook, the class took on a new project, a calendar to help raise money for next year's yearbook. Two community projects were done by NHS, painting the Yamhill park booths and painting the Carlton park benches. A picnic was also held at the Flyning M. CLUBSf23 This year's Speech squad increased its members from twelve last year to seventeen this year. These students participated in many tournaments around the state including ones at Tillamook, Canby, Linfield College and many others. Top honors this year Went to Eric Wood, who brought home a trophy in which he was awarded from his After Dinner Speaking, Shiela Long who was awarded a trophy for her humorous speech and Matilda Myers who earned first place in District in the Grand Masters Youth Oratorical Contest and second in Regional. janet Thornton also captured first in both area and district in the Voice of America Contest. This year the Pep Club did such things as making signs and selling spirit ribbons to promote spirit among the Y-C stu- dents. Under the leadership of President julie Fox, this club earned money for such things as a group activity and money for the wrestling rally to go to State . This year the Art Club did such things as paint windows at Christmas and sponsor a KYTE dance which was hosted by dis jockey Ron Leonard. Two new clubs, Science Fiction and Radio Communica- tions, were added to the list of clubs at Y-C this year. The Future Homemakers of America were very busy throughout the year, participating in money-making, community service, and fun projects. The season, accord- ing to Coach Barnett, was most en- joyable because of the character of this year's squad. They went to state for the 4th straight year, but lost their first two games. The Tigers were led in scoring and rebounding throughout the season by Lynel Strand. She was named to first team all-league and teammates Renee Fortune and Kathy Buxton were second team. Gone from next year's team will be seniors Debbie Baker, Ingrid Hermens, Sue Neubig, Lynel Strand, Renee Fortune, and Kathy Buxton. The V.V. team had a season record of 16-2, losing only one league game. High scorers and rebounder was Kelly Stanley. 5 W - . SPORTSf43 Wrestling fx auf 1 Y-C wrestlers this year provided tough compe- tition. The team consisted of one senior, two juniors, five sophomores, and three freshmen. Y-C's Bob Stroh 136 lbs. team captain main- tained a 25-1 season record and easily won district for the second year in a row. Bob also placed 5th in state. Several other surprises came when Y-C wrestlers Paul Peloquin 98 lbs, Mark Kimura 123 lbs, jeff Mode 141 lbs, and Ron Stroh 148 lbs, advanced in district to take third place at their respective weights. A win- ning season performance existed for each of the four wrestlers. jeff Nicassio 115 lbs, Jim Tuohy 130 lbs, and Richard Simonson 168 lbs, were active varsity entrants in the 1977-78 season. The season outstanding wrestler award went to senior Bob Stroh. Most improved wrestler was received by Sophomore Richard Simonson. A few of the highlights were beating Jefferson, the A state champs, and ending Amity's home winning streak with a 96-49 vic- tory. The team extended its home winning streak to 34. Three school records were broken, Bob Strahle in the high jump, Terin Tolleson in the pole vault, and Paul Miller in the 300 intermediate hurdles. Ten boys qualified for the state meet. The girls track team with a 10-6 record had a strong finish sending 7 girls to state in 8 events and tiing for second place at district. Five new school records were set. The 3 senior girls on the team, Debbie Baker, Renee Fortune, and jonni Hefflin, were among the leading point scorers and all went to state in their events. 5 3 4 1 SPORTSf49 Baseball The 1978 varsity baseball season was a very successful and rewarding one. The Tigers were picked in a pre-season poll of coaches to finish 6th in the Yawama League. This year's squad was primarily made up of sophomores with a strong nucleus of seniors and only two juniors. This combination of players with a great deal of hard work and desire surprised everyone but themselves and finished the sea- son in a tie for the league championship. The team missed out on another trip to the state play-offs when they lost the league play-off game to a very strong North Marion team. Their season record was 18 wins and 6 losses, in league 10 wins and 2 losses. The J.V. team had a 10 win, 7 loss season record. ln league they won 8 and lost 4. Eleven of the 17 girls finishing the season returned from last year giving the needed strength for a successful Season. Others having Winning seasons were Becky Larsen, Shelly Miller, and Dawn Whichurch. Yamhill -Carlton's 1978 softball team despite it's record this year showed great promise for the future. The team made up of 2 seniors, 4 juniors, 5 sophomores, and 3 freshmen was very young.
