For a teacher to be more a friend to many students than an instructor is a cherished rarity. However, Mrs. Vicki Pearse is just this type of teacher. Mrs. Pearse has been a member of the Y-C High faculty for the past three years. During this time she has taught such classes as College Prep, Drama, Theatre Crafts, Shakespeare, English and American Literature, Poetry, Creative Writing and Mythology. While at Y-C Mrs. Pearse has also given an abundant amount of her time and talent in the direction of the high school plays. We, the annual staff, dedicate the 1972 TIGER LINES to you Mrs. Pearse, in appreciation for all of your time, effort, talent, helpfulness, and never ending thought- fulness. Mr. William Fi. Opitz Coming in 1968 many changes have appeared during his four years of administration. One of the first changes was the new English program and redecorating the lower hall. The new library was moved to where the old shop used to be and in its place now is Mr. Barnett and Mr. Smiths room. Additional room was added also to the Home Ec. de- partment. A new shop building was added for Art, Industri Mechanics, and Shop classes. Just recently four more new additions with Mr. Opitzs, help were added also. Vocational clusters were open to interested students. Such clusters were Industrial Mechanics, Steno-Clerical, Accounting, and Vo. Ag. The new lunch program was added in 1971 and the new Off-Set machine was put in this year for the use of the school news- paper and various other classes. Two new offices were put in for counseling purposes. For all these accomplishments we feel the 1971-72 TIGER LINES should be dedicated to Mr. Opitz. The second year of Cross Country for Y-C showed uch improvement in the number out for the team as well s the win-loss record. John Luoto, a senior, was the only returning letter- ian. He, along with two other seniors, Greg Geelan and ark Cooke, three Sophomores, Stan Gardner, Denny Mc- aughlin and Loren Collins, and one freshman, Mike Wyf- ls, made up the varsity seven. Other runners were Jerry anTasse1, Jim Cooper and Jesse Kobs. The team defeated North Marion, Dayton twice, mity twice, Sherwood twice, Banks three times, Forest rove, Vernonia and Clatskanie. They lost to Gervais in e regular season, and to Scappoose in a practice meet. e North Marion Invitational was encouraging, with Y-C king 4th and Mark Cooke Sth in a group of 134 runners. In the district at Sherwood, our top five runners were the top ten of the thirty-three runners, with Stan Gard- r second, Mark Cooke fourth, Loren Collins seventh, nny McLaughlin eighth, and John Luoto tenth. I feel this is the best group of distance runners I've er coached. They were not afraid of work or competi- n. We will lose some good men at graduation, but we should have a good, young team that will be back next year. Coach Judd Record Y-C 72 . . . .... Vernonia 6 Y-C 58 . . .... The 4 league losses could have been our victories as well, as we lost these games by a total of 21 points. The big scorers of the season who led the J.V.'s were Larry Cook, 16.045, and Bob Neill, 16.182, John Sitton al- so scored with good consistency for a 7.688 average. The leading rebounders were Larry Cook with 11.545 average and John Sitton with 6.688 average. Banks Hustle Key To Success The 1971-72 Frosh basketball team possessed nearly all the tools and talents ofa championship team. The only element missing was heightg the Frosh played against taller teams throughout the season. The lack of a blg', man was more than compensated for by extreme hustle, desire, and most impor- tant, teamwork. The season saw many different players share in the role ofbeing the key to victory. A well-balanced team is always the most difficult type to defenseg the five starters were an extremely well balanced group, scoring consistently and playing excellent team bas- ketball. Yet, no team can be a winner without a strong bench. A big reason for the 15-7 record of this year's Frosh was not only its teamwork and balance, but also its fine group of re- serves, who contributed a great deal to a very successful sea- son. Coach Barnett Coach Barnett lst row: Dave Rodriguez, Ron Bonofiglio, Dave Mealue, Troy DeVan, Cliff Hadtield. 2nd row: Coach Barnett, Greg Bellwood, Steve Neubig Tom Camarillo, Ben Mullen, Mike Stonebrink. lst row: Dan Luoto, Sam Nichols, Alan Fox, Rod Buxton, Tom Baker. 2nd row: Mr. Smith, Randy Mason, Larry Patershall, Bob Dudding, Dave Johnson, Randy Foster, Larry Nichols. Desire, determination, and dedication would be words used to describe this year's basketball team. When it seemed we were doomed to finishing on the loser's side of the win-loss record, the team pulled together and played some exciting basketball games. Winning four of their last five games is evidence of the character and persever- ance of this team. Losing six games by five or less points indicates that we were always within striking distance of all teams played. If the breaks had fallen our way, who knows where we might have ended. Injuries to Alan Fox and Randy Mason, and not having Larry Nichols for a full season were certainly handicaps to our team. But with the excellent play of seniors Sam Nichols and Rod Buxton, and also Larry Patershall, the Tiger's had a successful season. The future looks bright, as many underclassmen also contributed to the Y-C basketball program. A few of last year's team decided not to participate in football this year, and Sam and Larry Nichols had trouble passing their physicals. The season started with a win over Scappoose in a nonleague game. Randy Mason quarterbacked the team to a 12-O shutout. The following week the Tigers defeated Clatskanie in another non-league game 35-21 , and it seemed like the team was beginning to get things together. The third week of the season started the league play. The Tigers marched into Dayton high-spirited, and came home with tails between their legs after a 34 to 8 defeat at the hands of the Pirates. The Y-C team then defeated Sheri- dan, Banks, and Sherwood before they reached the very crucial game against Willamina. The game ended 8 to 6 in favor of the Tigers. This led the Tigers to Homecoming, and a victory that could have assured the Tigers of a possible tie for first place in the league, but victory did not belong to Y-C. The final score was Nestucca 21, Y-C 8. All hope seemed lost for Y-C going into the final game against Amity. In order to continue into the state playoffs, Y-C had to defeat Amity, Banks had to beat Willamina, and Sheridan had to defeat Nestucca. With great guidance and help, this is exactly what happened, and Y-C was declared the district representative in the state play-off by a one-point system. Y-C's first play-off game was the quarter-final game held at Seaside. The underrated Tigers completely domin- ated the game, and defeated the Seagulls 25 to 9, The next step on the ladder was the semi-final game against Siuslaw on the Y-C field. Siuslaw was a very powerful team, and picked to defeat the Tigers with their power-running attack, but the Tigers again dominated the game with a very tough defense and balanced offensive attack. Now, for the first time in the history of Y-C, they were playing in the AA football finals. Gladstone was a very strong team, and picked to win by as many as 20 points. The Tigers traveled to Gladstone, and in the mud and wet battled the No. 1 rated Gladiators even for three quarters. Gladstone did finally score in the final quarter to defeat the Tigers 18-6. Even though the team had sophomores, they were usually overpowered by opponents. The team fought and scrapped on a willingness to win. Even though they lost 7 games, they never quit, and proved this by beating Sherida 18-6. Mr. Kelley said, Even though we didn't have a win- ning season, this was a great bunch of boys. At the beginning of the year the fact that ll seniors, 4 of which were lst team all-league selec- tions, would have to be replaced by non-letterman and sophomores gave the opposing coaches in the league the basis for selecting Y-C to finish near the bottom of the league. However, the three returning starters from last year, Sam Nichols, Tom Baker, and Larry Nichols provided a good nucleus to build around. Randy McLeod, Larry Mc- Ilvaine, and sophomores Mike Collins and Bo Buxton along with freshman Greg Bellwood contributed more than was ever expected. Rod Buxton, Ron Jenkins, Jim Harwood, Greg Dull and Bob Staser provided strength in key situations which often meant the difference between winning and losing. This year's team attitude was one of never givingfup which is proven by the fact that in seven of the last vic- tories Y-C had to come from behind in the late innings in order to win. I don't think that I can say enough about our pitching staff of Larry Nichols, Randy McLeod, Mike Col- lins, and Rod Buxton. Larry threw only 6 213 innings last year and the others didn't pitch any, but this year, they proved their varsity ability by combining for 21 vic- tories against only 7 defeats. I don't think any one person can be singled out and called our key player, during the season but we did it as a team and not individuals.
