From a win-loss point of view the 1970 football season might not seem very successful, but success must be mea- sured in more than in number of wins. It is very hard to measure the ways a football player succeeds during a sea- song he must give a successful effort and possess a success- ful character. With a victory over a tough Scappoose team in the first game it looked like success in number of wins would come easyg but through injuries to key players this type of suc- cess was not to be found. The next two games with Clat- skanie and Banks were hard fought, but victory was not to be the Tiger's. At this point it would have been easy to give up, but the spirit, drive and determination of the Y-C football players did not let down. Y-C had many fine football players, but those receiving recognition by the league for their outstanding perfor- mances during the season were Tim Frost-first team all- league defensive end and Sam Nichols-first team all-league defensive halfback. Others receiving second team all-league honors were Steve Bernards and Steve Hagen at defensive The season's final game was a good indication of the Y-C teamis spirit. The Tigers were victorious over the Sheridan Spartans by a score of 35-0. J .Vfs Show Gridiron Abilities with Winning Season In spite of lack of practice together, the 1970 J.V. foot- ball squad managed a 5-3 season, losing each game by less than one touchdown. They could have beaten any of the three teams on a given night with a little bit of luck. We were fortunate in suffering no injuries and a lot of potentially outstanding players gained a great deal of in- valuable experience. The squad was small with only 22 players and everyone got to play a great deal and started on one of the four squads: Kickoff and Receiving teams, Of- fense or Defense. With 14 of the 22 players receiving varsity letters as well, the quality of their ability becomes apparent. We were good enough to win three, maybe we could have won more games. This was the case this year, when the boys won 3 and lost 3. I am sure that the boys felt that they should have won a few more than they did. I know that I did. We started out the season with a loss to a very fine team, the Banks Braves. It was one of those games you would like to forget. The boys played a hard game, but they were completely out-manned. We came back, however, and won three games, beating Sherwood twice along with beating Willamina. In all, I feel that there is a lot of football potential here. It is hard to say what a boy will be like in two or three years. One might be a late developer and not show much potential until his senior year. Another might have matured in his freshman year and never physically improve much. Even though, a boy can still develop mentally and physical- ly and sports should be a factor in his development. Luoto Good Year For our first season in cross-country and a rather small number on the squad, I was satisfied with the season. Lloyd Goad moved in from Washington and along with John Cooper these were the only men on the team to ever have run two miles in competition before. Lloyd proved to be our most consistant front runner. Ken Burnham ran for us partly to help and partly to get in shape for wrestling. John Luoto, a Junior, was one of our top runners coming in first in one home meet. Mike Farm- er, a Sophomore, had had a little experience at McMinnville Junior High. Rafael Robles and Rolland Cranford, two Freshmen, rounded out the team. Things are looking brighter for next fall, but we will miss Lloyd and John. lt looks like Sherwood, this year's league champions, will again be the team to beat next season. We hope to have a long-orange-line of Y-C runners up and down the hills and roads of Yamhill, with other colored suits strung out behind, when the season gets going next fall. Five of the six team mem bers will graduate, and needless to say their experience and skill will be missed next year. The girls ended their season with a 3 win-5 loss record. Jo Ann Allyn was high point for the season, with 34 points while Anita Rainer was sec- ond in line of scoring with 27 points. Along with a lack of experience and plagued with in- juries the BU volleyball team played several close games, but always lost. A lot of good experience was gained by the girls and they show a lot of potential for next year. Ju- lie Frost and Trudy Strange tied with 42 points apiece, for high point scorers. The 1970-71 basketball season is one we could compare to the story of Cinderella without the handsome prince finding Cinderella. The goal of every basketball team is one winning a spot in the State Basketball Tournament. To qualify for the .state tourney you must first proceed through the District Tournament. This goal was almost a reality by the end of the season. Just as poor Cinderella used to be hassled by her sisters and mother, so it was with the Tigers, as they were hassled by such ugly sisters as Dayton, Willamina, Nestucca, Banks and Amity. T his, of course, was during the first found of Yamama League action. Cinderella had a fairy godmother who gave her a great carriage to help fulfill her wishes. The Tigers' godmother was a feeling of confidence that would carry them all to the fancy ball, called the second round of Yawama League ac- tion. All eyes were on Cinderella as she entered the ball- room in spectacular form. The Tigers entered the second round in spectacular form also, as they eliminated Banks from the unbeaten status in Yawama play. The Tigers continued their winning Ways by defeating Dayton, Nestucca, and Sheridan. But much like the story of Cinderella, the clock struck twelve and the handsome prince did not find the Tigers in time, so they settled for a lesser reward than that of the district tourna- ment. The Tigers' reward was that they knew, by seasons' end, they were one of the best teams in the league. If the ball had bounced different ways in different games the prince might have found us. There were many outstanding contributions throughout the year by the 5 seniors, 7 juniors and 1 sophomore that made up this years' varsity basketball team. And with many juniors and sophomores coming back for another year of basketball, maybe our carriage will not turn into a pumpkin and the glass slipper will fit. Success The first night of practice looked as though it would be a bleak season with only 7 guys out and only one of these was over 5' 8 . But then as the varsity had to release some of their candidates down to the J .V. level and a few others turned out to help the team, it began to get a little crowded at practice. There was a good nucleus to start with since this group had compiled a 15 win-6 loss record from the year before. Coach Smith kept Randy Foster on the varsity, even thgouh he was a sophomore, and this obviously weakened the rebound strength from our team. But Larry Nichols came up from the freshman team and proved to be a big factor in our team,s success. The physical strength of our team, man for man, seemed to be a little superior to that of our opponents. So, even though we were shorter than our opponent, every game we always had a little more hustle and speed to win with. Since we were a strong team, we used a full court press and man- to-man defense all of the time. It was a very pleasant and rewarding season as we ended up with a record of 19 wins and 3 losses overall, and a 12 win-2 loss league record, which was first place. Coach Leatherwood Scappoose. . . Looking merely at this record, one would be able to say that it was a very successful season. However, success should not always be measured in terms of wins and losses alone, it should include individual pro- gress and improvement throughout the season. The beginning of the season greeted 10 individuals with only one thing in common, the hope of earning a starting position on the team. As the season progressed many changes in attitudes as well as basketball ability took place. These 10 individuals were no longer individuals compet- ing with one another, but, one unit of 10 players striving to improve themselves, not for personal glory, but for the ben- efit of the team. The simple fact that there were no individuals on this team of 10 is a tribute to the mental attitudes which they developed and the primary reason for a successful year. Coach Barnett Sheridan. Barber. fDedication, Desire, and Determination' Dedication, desire, and determination are perhaps the key words to describe the attitude of this year's baseball team. With these three ingredients present in each and every member of Y-C's baseball team the season ended a highly successful one. Its record of 22 wins and 8 losses was one of the best in the state. Unlike most seasons, the 1971 baseball season had no one turning point or highlight, instead its highlights were when each individual could look at himself and honestly say that he had become a better ballplayer because of his efforts and dedication. Although the 1971 Y-C Baseball team finished second in league play with a 12-2 record they possessed all of the qualities of a true championship baseball team. All of which was the result of lots of hard work. The season payed tribute to five members of the team who were voted to the F irst-Team Yawama League All- Star squd. This was a record number of players from any one team to be elected to the First-Team. Those selected were: Paul Coppinger-Infield, Tim Pfeiffer-Infield, Dan Stieg-Outtield, Keith Nichols-Pitcher, and Larry Nichols- Catcher. Being placed on the Second-Team All-Star Squad was Sam Nichols at an infield position. The 1971 Y-C Baseball Team finished second in league play with both losses coming at the hands of the Sherwood Bowmen, who eventually finished second in the state play- offs. Although the Tigers finished second in league, they possessed all the qualities of a true championship baseball team. Carol Barnett Gaston . . . Gaston .... Gaston .... Rex Putnum Gaston .... One with McMinnville high school, Linfield College, McMinnville J r. High, and two with Sherwood. The girls were very en- thusiastic despite the fact that defeat was in the bag each time they played. The girls had 4 league meets and l nonleague meet. In predistrict meets, Y-C's Tigresses were victorious. The league meet was held at Willamina, where the girls placed second.
