His father was born in Lancaster, Pa., in 1854, and was a banker, with the First National Bank of Wrightsville, Pa. He died in Mountville, Pa., in 1914. Mrs. von der Smith lived in Columbia, Pa., before her marriage. Phil prepared at the Hotchkiss School, and is chairman of the Yale Branch, American Institute of Electrical Engineers. Hotchkiss Club.
