For three days beginning October 15, 1947, a group of distinguished scientists gathered in New Haven to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the found- ing of the Sheffield Scientihc School. Underlying the learned speeches of the solemn academic gathering a dramatic story could be perceived-a story of pioneer- ing, of searching for th escientihc truths Which an ever- more complex civilization so desperately needed. It is a story made manifest by the tremendous expansion of the school and its scope, by the scientific giants it has produced, and the enthusiasm With Which the Uni- versity and the nation paid homage to its Hrst century.
