1 Q w ' 1 , f MM fy-M1337 0Lll C MP S CLASS OF NINETEEN HUNDRED FORTY FIVE PUBLISHED BY THE YALEQBANNER IVER N E W II AV E N C0l'Ll'leCiLClfl,t E742 SITY Metz of 1945 E give you hearty welcome into the family. It is part of civilized tradi- tion to celebrate the arrival of a baby, and despite the fact that this happy event is with us annually inevitable-we can control its size but we have no methods of academic birth control-we rejoice in your appearance. And while it is proper that without these walls we should preserve a decent modesty, it is a fact that being a close-knit family We think well enough of ourselves to believe that you too deserve congratulations as you join us. Like all newcomers, you will find that the celebration occasioned by your appearance will shortly subside. You must not be dis- appointed, therefore, as shortly you discover that you are being taken rather for granted and, like the youngest in every family, dis- cern in the attitude of your elders, whether cn the faculty or among the undergraduates, a combination of interrogative doubt as to your qualities, paternalistic regard as to your manners, and an affection which however sincere will not always be obvious. As you adjust yourselves to new conditions, you will find many helping hands. You will also find various rules and regulations. For myself I dislike rules and I wish that I had the wit or the courage to evade them. But I have lived long enough in an academic community to 4 ' The Presid ent's Message WooLsEY HALL, September 20, 1941 Preridefzt SUWZUZIV at lair desk recognize the futility of the impossible and I have come to accept them. For what my experience is worth, to follow or reject, you may have it without cost. So also in my rela- tion with the Dean and his faculty. They are gentlemen not only of wisdom, but with a sense of humor. But I have found it better to avoid attempts of my own at arousing their humor by over-unconventional behavior, for the consequences are not always clear. On the whole, I think the Dean and Faculty should be taken seriously. You will discover, also, I believe, that the chief treasures of Yale are not those you see around you in the material equipment, but are rather to be found in your own personal relationship with things of the mind and the spirit that the university traditionally fosters. Many of the ways of Yale seem strange to a newcomer. Appreciation of them cannot be taught as from a text book. It comes only by opening yourselves freely to their influence, by actually living the Yale life until you gradually catch the real meaning of places, and things, and traditions which have become very dear to us :-an appreciation of the Yale of the past which we count on you to pass on to future generations. These are all matters of tasteg but here are seven phases 'of life common to all . 3-l e6Al'I'l,el'I, The College Plan BY AN UNDERGRADUATE N about four months, you of the Class of 1945 will be asked to make a decision of great importance-you will be requested to give your preferences as to the College in which you would most enjoy living during your last three years at Yale. It is a problem which should be answered only after con- siderable thought. lf you are interested in Yale, you will be interested in the College Plan. For it has been the saving factor, as Yale increased in size, which has preserved a certain cohesion among the undergraduate body and has pre- vented it from becoming merely an amorphous mass. In earlier days Yale was a small col- lege, and as President Charles Seymour, 1908, has expressed it, it was a family the members of which, Faculty aswell as students, were intensely conscious of the bond that held them together. The students, following the natural tendencies of youth, emphasized the social rather than the intellectual aspects of the bond, and developed that sentiment of solidarity that came to be called Yale Spirit. Four years on the Yale Campus pre- pared the undergraduate not merely for in- tellectual power but for a sense of social responsibility. As Yale increased in size and as the curri- culum became more complex, the original single-unit organization became inadequate. Graduate and professional schools were found- ed. Another undergraduate unit, the Sheffield Scientific School, was set up. The University spirit permeated the institution before the oflicial name College was changed to Univer- sity. But always the undergraduate body was regarded as the soul of Yale. Changes in organization were developed to meet changed conditions. The Class, now as large as the old College, became an undergraduate unit, with its own highly developed erprit :Ze corps, bound always to the other Classes by the sense of loyalty to tl1e larger all-embracing Yale. But as the Classes continued to grow in size, the integrity of the Class as a unit broke down-a return to the principle of the 8 original small College seemed not merely de- sirable but possible, provided it could be given physical expression. It was the generosity of the late Edward S. Harkness, '97, that made this idea possible. In 1930 he provided funds for the building and educational endowment of those Eve quadrangles which are known today as Berke- ley, Calhoun, Davenport, Pierson, and Timo- thy Dwight Colleges. He also gave funds for the remodeling of the Memorial Quadrangle, which had been built from the gift of his mother, Mrs. Stephen V. Harkness. In 1933 the southern portion of Meinorial Quadrangle became Branford College and the northern portion became Saybrook College, and the interiors of some of the dormitories were re- modeled to provide rooms for Fellows, a library, common room, dining hall, and a Master's house for each College. The build- ings which completed Jonathan Edwards College in 1932 were also the gift of the late Edward S. Harkness. Dickinson and W'hee- lock Halls, now part of Jonathan Edwards College, had been constructed in 1926 from the bequest of Robert M. Judson. A ninth College, Trumbull, was ready for occupation in 1933 through a gift provided from the Ster- ling Fund, the Estate of john William Ster- ling, '64. In 1939 work began on the tenth and last quadrangle, Silliman College, made possible by the bequest of Frederick W. Van- derbilt, '76S, and Silliman was opened as a College for the first time in September of 1941. Thus the hopes and dreams of yesterday have become reality. Menubers of the three upper Classes in Yale College, the Sheffield Scientific School, and the Engineering School are now admitted to the various Colleges so far as possible in ac- cordance with their individual preferences. Your preferences cannot always be followed, and you may not be admitted to the College of your first, second, or third choice, but it is also true that the Allocations Committee makes a sincere and thorough effort to follow out your desires. NORTHROP, Maxter Profenar of Pbilafophy Timothy Dwight College JAMES GRAFTON ROGERS, Ma.rteV Profemor of Law Trumbull College CHARLES HYDE XVARREN, Master Doom of the Sheffield SCi67ZfiflC School, mul Profeysor of Geology NE important factor in the organiza- tion of the Residential College Plan was the desire to preserve Yale's demo- cratic traditions regarding self-supporting students by enabling them to participate fully in the life of the Colleges. From the outset it was obvious that much of the normal social life would center around dining halls, making it desirable for self-supporting students to be free at meal time to enter into this phase of life by associating with fellow members on an equal basis. This meant eliminating stu- dent waiters in the College dining halls which, in turn, would remove a large source of remunerative employment, thereby making it impossible for many self-supporting stu- dents to become members of Colleges unless some substitute could be found for the board jobs. The substitute was supplied through the generosity of Edward S. Harkness, 1897, in the form of an endowment whose income should provide stipends for self-supporting members of the Residential Colleges in return for services rendered in various types of em- ployment other than waiting on table. This endowment was subsequently increased by be- quests from the estates of John W. Sterling. 1864, and Frederick W. Vanderbilt, 1876, and the income from these endowments forms the Bursary Fund which is administered by the Council of Masters through the Committee on Bursary Appointments. The Fund pro- vides aid for nearly six hundred College mem- 20 The Bursary Plan By JAMES MCLANE TOMPKINS bers and stipends normally enable to defray either the cost of board or a portion of room rent, although for certain jobs requiring ex- ceptional personal qualifications or carrying unusual responsibility the stipends provide a substantial part of college expenses. There are two classifications of Bursary Employment, In-College and Out-College positions. The former comprises jobs involv- ing administrative duties within the College units, sucl1 as aides in student offices, librar- ians, athletic secretaries, messengers and printers. Out-College jobs include aides to Fellows, faculty and laboratory assistants, attendants in the University Library or the Gallery of Fine Arts, and clerical aides in many University offices. In every instance the Committee attempts to place each student in work for which he is best qualified and has a real interest. The student's record, the per- sonal preference expressed on his bursary application, and the results of interviews with his College Master and the Secretary of the Committee form the basis of selection for the employment the individual eventually receives, and in many cases men can receive employment directly associated with their field of study or be placed in jobs which will give them practical experience useful in later life. Although the Bursary Fund cannot pro- vide for all self-supporting College members, each application receives careful individual consideration and thus far all qualified stu- dents needing such assistance have received it.
