unummummmmmm'numummmmumnnin1mumnumwinwinwu1nuwvuwnwnmnmmuwwnwnummrnnmimrmummuv1umminummmmnumummmumnmm ELI VVHITNEY Ll VVHITNEY, to whom this volume of the Yale Banner and Pot Pourri is dedicated, was born in New Haven on January 22, 1847, being the son of Eli and Sarah Dalliba Wliitney and the grandson of Eli Whitney, the in- ventor of the cotton gin. He graduated from Yale College with the degree of B.A. in 1869, and in the summer of 1870 was a member of the Hrst scientific expedition to the west under Professor Marsh. In 1872 he received the degree of M.A. from Yale. From 1871 to 1888 he was actively engaged in the affairs of the Whitney Arms Company, serving as vice-president of this organization from 1880 to 1888, when the business was sold to the VVinchester Repeating Arms Company. He has, since 1894, been president of the New Haven 'Water Company, of the WVest Haven VVater Company since 1900, and of the Milford Water Company since 1907. In addition he has, at various times, served as president of the Union and New Haven Trust Company, as vice-president and as president of the City Bank of New Haven, vice- president of the New Haven Chamber of Commerce, and as a director in many important corporations, including the New Haven Gas Light Company, the Security Insurance Company, the New York, New Haven 81 Hartford Railroad Company, the New Haven Bank, and the Connecticut Savings Bank. In spite of his numerous business activities, Mr. VVhitney has found time to serve the City of New Haven and the State of Connecticut in many capacities and has long been identified with educational and philanthropic work. He was alderman from 1883 to 1885, park commissioner from 1883 to 1885, a member of the Board of Public WO1'kS from 1885 to 1890, a member of the New Haven Board of Education from 1891 to 18941, and member and president of this Board from 1897 to 1909. In 19044 and 1905 he was a member of the Connecticut Senate, and has served on several of the State Commissions. From 1901 to 1918 he was president of the General Hospital Society of Connecticut CNew Haven Hospitalj, and has been vice- president of the New Haven Dispensary and of the New Haven Colony Historical Society. In 1901 he was elected by the graduates an Alumni Fellow of the Yale Corpora- tion, being re-elected in 1907 and again in 1913. He was renominated for another six-year term in the spring of 1919, but declined to stand for re-election. During his eighteen years on the Yale Corporation, he has served on many of its most important committees and has frequently been appointed to act as chairman of the meetings, both of the Corporation and of its Prudential Committee, during the absence from New Haven of President Hadley. 5
