SALUTATORY. IN those old college times, when that famous rivalry between the two crack literary societies, the Brothers and Linonian existed, the war-cry of the former was the hrst verse of their celebrated campaign song, Then sling the old blue Banner out. These societies have long 'since departed, but for many years after their death was this same old war song revived throughout the college world at the beginning of each year, showing the need that is felt by all, for this our publication. If college is a miniature world, the catalogue its directory, then cer- tainly is the BANNER its guide book, without which all, but especially those who are now for the tirst time entering our midst, must wander aimlessly and in danger. As this is so, we have endeavored to supply this want, and now issue another copy of the BANNER,H feeling that if hard work has its due, our reward shall be ample. In it the Freshman may, with pardonable pride, see himself for the iirst time enrolled as a member of the Academic department. With the same feeling the Sophomore may underline his name in the list of the Campaign or Class Supper Committees, as he sends a copy to his friends. And the upper-class men may fight their battles o'er again as they contemplate the many victories they have won. VVe recommend to our patrons our Advertisers, who not only oifer a time class of goods, but show by their dealings with us a liberality towards col- lege publications which should be rewarded.
