Mrs. Erps served on the school board for fifteen years. In 1945 she resigned from the school board to fill a vacancy in the faculty. She has taught for eighteen years since that time. There is a destiny that makes us brothers. None goes his way alone. All that we give into the lives of others comes back into our own. ' a This book is a bound tribute to the boys and girls who make up the Yale-Jamaica-Bagley School student body and to the faculty who have dedicated themselves to the cause of quality education. A much higher quality of education is required to turn students into thinking men and women, than to turn them into merely competent individ- uals. A well-rounded democratic education must do both. M. B. MCCURDY Superintendent HELEN CRABB District Secretary . . h THE IMAGE OF Y-I-B A figure of speech, common in current usage, is the 'Image' of some individual or organization. This word is used to signify the mental picture or conception of such things that an outside observer might formulate about them. Does Y-J-B have, in all respects, the kind of Image we would like it to have? We must be aware that it is primarily the students of a school that create its Image. Most 'people form their opinion of a school from their observations of the actions of its stu- dents and from the way the students talk about their school. Some of the things that impress people most favorably is a solid support of the teams, the school's organizations, and your fellow students. Naturally, appropriate- ness of dress and mannerly conduct are also equally important in their impact on others. Each of you needs to make it your purpose to strengthen the Image of Y-I-B: that you may be proud of that Image in the years to come. This yearbook will preserve many fond memories for you, A highly regarded Image of Y-J-B will give those memories greater pleasure to you. A. A. ALLEN Principal ' Scion! ?acaZz'q l MR. GALLIANO MR. We were the juniors of the newly formed YIB School District. We had just gotten to know each other when play practice started in mid-September, with Mrs. Towne as director. The play, Take Your Medicine, was presented on two nights, October 17 and 19. On January 18, the long-awaited day came when we received our class rings. We all had looked forward to this event, but some of us still didn't keep them too long. ln mid-March, preparations began for the Prom, which was held on Saturday, May 12. The theme was Fantasy of the Sea, and even if we do have to say so our- selves, it was very pretty. On June 2, our class, now 38 strong, received the coveted report card that stated we were now officially Seniors. August 27, 1962, found our class, now 39, arriving at YJBg not quite so quietly and shyly as the year before. Shortly after school started we gained Darlene Moore, who came to us from Canada. However, we lost Donald Kepple, who joined the service. On October 11, the Freshmen honored us with a party. Not quite on their own free will, but we had a lot of fun, Freshmen. The next day found us, still not too bright from the night before, on our way to Des Moines to have our pictures taken. We received our pictures right before Christmas The two weeks previous to Homecoming were spent decorating the Senior Class float, which, of course, won first prize. Sheila Barrett and Dave Minor reigned over the Homecoming Dance, October Embers, held on October 19, 1962. It was a big success, especially since our team defeated Menlo. The month of November was spent practicing for the Senior play, Deadly Ernest, which was presented November 16, under the direction of one of our sponsors, Mrs. Frye. Our Senior Soup Supper was held on December 13, it must have tasted pretty good, because Dick Donnelly ate 8 bowls of it. On March 23, Mr. Murray chauffeured us to Des Moines to tour the Capitol. We sat in on sessions of the House and Senate. There were some pretty tired Seniors on the way home. You would be, too, if you climbed to the top of the Capitol four uv times. The busy month of May began with a breakfast given in our honor by the Yale W. S. C. S. It was nice to be the guests of honor and eat without having to scrape our plates. May 3, we attended Career Day at Veisha on the Iowa State campus. Everyone got to visit the exhibits of their choice. In the afternoon, we attended the hilarious Cyclone Review, Continental Capers, in which Leo Sheehy took an active part. Guthrie County Court Day was held May 8 at Adel. All the Seniors in Guthrie County attended. YJB had the honor of having three Seniors, Peg Thornburg, Dale Deardorff, and Lyle Chaloupka, serve on the jury. May 11 saw the Bagley gym decorated to the theme of Moonlight and Roses. The Juniors and their sponsors, Mrs. Hill and Mr. Bridges, had transformed the gym into a lovely garden. After a delicious banquet, we danced to the music of the Five D's from Perry. It was greatly enjoyed by everyone. Thanks again, Juniors. We left at 5:30, May 15, for Winterset, where we ate at the Gold Buffet Dining Room. After a delicious meal, we went bowling. It was more crowded coming home than it was going down. No one even mentioned stopping for a snack on the way home. May 19 began the last busy week for us, with Baccalaureate being held in the Jamaica gym. Mr. Lockling of the Yale Church of Christ gave the address. Tonight we are holding class night. Commencement will be held Thursday night at 8 p. m. with Garry Lenhart as speaker. We will then officially end our high school career as we walk up on the stage and receive our diplomas. ' 65444 We? O Hello, everyone. This is the year 1983. My name is Dave Miner. I have just blasted off on an orbit flight around the earth. I am now scanning the earth through our powerful, new telescope. I will relay what I see to Verneta Slaybaugh in the cen- tral control station at Cape Canaveral. She is the head engineer in charge of sending off astronauts. My ship is orbiting over the Atlantic Ocean now. Below I see a large ocean liner. There seems to be a bit of confusion aboard. Looks as if the hostess has led someone into the pool. Good heavens, the hostess is my old classmate, Susan Griffith. I am now approaching London. I see an art gallery below. A beautiful blonde is carefully studying a picture. As she looks up at a statue, I see it is Peg Thornburg, the art collector. The main attraction in London seems to be the circus. The sign says it is featuring the ever-so-graceful trapeze artist, James Leog and the bravest lion tamer of them all, Dale Deardorff. A special attraction is the fire-eater, Judy Wolfe. Passing over the French Riviera, I see Deanna Shiilet, the heiress that inherited a couple million dollars, lying on the beach in her bikini. Even her French poodle is wearing sunglasses. Coming to Rome, l see a group of girls surrounding the newly crowned Mr. America He is on a world tour and is making headlines all over. It couldn't have happened to a more deserving person. Congratulations and have fun, Loyal Dorr! To my left I see the country of Russia. There is a sneaky looking person approach- ing the Kremlin. I recognize him now. It's Bill Hoyt, the famed spy in Russia. Now I turn toward India. In a very secluded part I see Marion Allen, a missionary, surrounded by a group of friendly natives. Some of the women seem to be curious about a new attraction, a wig collection and their owner Phyllis Jensen. Passing over Indonesia, I see a group of girls fanning our own major of the armed forces, Robert Sellers. I am now approaching Australia. I can see the world's first kangaroo training farm ahead. It is run by Angela Hooper. Her love of horses led her to this occupation. Hawaii is coming up in the foreground. I can see its gleaming capital. Their new governor, Keith Frantum, is doing a wonderful job. Hollywood is sparkling below me now. I see Mary Ann McCa1'tney's name in lights. She is presently starring in the picture, l Was a Human Meatball. I can see the buildings ofU. C. L. A. in the distance. Karen Deardorff is the head biology teacher here. Just below is the famed California freeway. Looks like that new dragster, Llciyd- Middleton, is trying out his car. He certainly is driving dangerously. Oh - oh, here comes that fearless patrolman, Fred Hagge. He's revolutionized that old saying to Fred always gets his man. As California fades into the background, the even-brighter lights of Las Vegas come into sight. There at the famous Stardust we see the new bartender, Leo Sheehy. As I come to Arizona. I see that crazy dream of one of my classmates is coming true. Laura Deardorff's cat ranch is almost completed. lust crossing into Texas, I see a large semi-truck and its driver. Sharon Thomas. I have just received word from that great weather forecaster. Sherry Strait, that weather conditions will remain the same. Lyle Chaloupka's love of noise, as shown by his car, is revealed in his new interest, bowling. He loves to hear those pins fall. He's a member of the Professional Bowling Association, now playing in Austin. Texas. l'm passing over my home state of Iowa now. One of my classmates still lives here. It is Dennis Kraft, who now farms 2, OOO acres of land. Passing over the land of 10,000 lakes, I see one of my classmates has taken advan- tage of all this water. Jane Latimer is running a very successful fish hatchery. I see Jim Chaloupka up here as the center with the Green Bay Packers. Up in Canada I see Darlene Moore has run down the wanted criminal Tuffy Ma- lone. She is the head of the Canadian Mounted Police. I am approaching the outstanding university of Notre Dame. Their science de- partment has been greatly improved with the addition oflack Burk as head chemist. The math department has become world famous with Dave Clark as head mathematician Now I see a distinguished looking doctor. Oh, my mistake. That black bag fooled me. It's Dave Dvorak, the radio-TV repair man. What's this? A woman tramping through the woods of Pennsylvania. I should know her. Oh, it's Sheila Barrett. She married a game warden and is apparently going to their secret still to find him. The lights of New York City are approaching. I see Sing Sing below. They are putting a person into solitary confinement. My gosh, it's Jerry Burkhardt. I wonder what he did. There is a concert going on in New York City. The New York Philharmonic has a new orchestra leader, Bill Overman. He has a new trumpet player, John Hollar. Our class has contributed two authors to the literary field. Kathi Remele is rapidly taking Abby's place with her advice to the lovelorn. I see the orher's huge mansion below. He is lounging by his pool. It's Max Gilli- land, who became a millionaire from his book lOl Ways to Get Out of Study Hall. I am almost at the end of my flight. Below me now is Washington, D.C. The president is just returning to the White House. They say he will be another Abraham Lincoln. Congratulations, Harvey Crabb. His private nurse, Mary Moore, is coming to meet him. There are rumors of a marriage between the president and his nurse. Well, I am now at the end of my flight. I have certainly enjoyed seeing all my old classmates and hope you have, too. This is Dave Miner signing off. CLASS MOTTO - One Goal Reached - Many Beyond CLASS COLORS - Powder Blue and White CLASS FLOWER - White Rose 0605! ' F954 It all started when Henry's boss fired him, and his girlfriend threw him overboard, and Aunt Ethel ordered him from her boarding house because of no rent money. Well, poor homeless, girl-less, and jobless Henry, spending the night in a park, meets one, Mr. Bumpus. He pours out his troubles to Mr. Bumpus, who tells Henry life has dealt him a miserable blow. Mr. Bumpus has a friend named Ernest who, for only 317. 83, gets poor downtrodden souls like Henry out of their misery. So Henry, in his pitiful, forlorn condition, pays the money, goes back home and finds fly Aunt Ethel is ready to forgive him, Q23 his girl wants another chance, 135 his boss has given him a raise, Q43 life was never happier and better and - BOING - he remembers he's paid his last cent to someone named Ernest to get him out of this world. Needless to say, he's really in misery now, especially when virtually everyone he encounters is named Ernest. Then, as fate would have it, Mr. Bumpus and a friend come looking for a room and when Henry sees them, well, that really puts the icing on his cake. Things now reach a fever pitch, because poor Henry - weak from fright - finally goes to Mr. Bum pus and demands payment in full, immediately, so he'll be out of his dismal misery And imagine Mr. Bumpus' consternation. You see, he never planned on seeing Henry again, thinking the deal would be just a simple way to get some money. So now he has to carry out his part of the bargain. But finally the whole thing comes to a showdown and everything is brought to light, and Henry learns of Mr. Bumpus' scheme.
