VOCATION TAB 16 OF CONTENTS ON LOCATION INTRODUCTION t SENIORS 17 JUN iORS 49 SOPHOMORES 61 FRESHMEN 7t ORGANIZATIONS AND CLUBS 64 SPORTS 95 FACULTY 126 ACADEMICS 131 CURRENT EVENTS 138 ' ADS 145 Lights! Camera! Action! Welcome to the 1987-88 Yale High School Yearbook. The theme for this year ' s yearbook is On Location. We felt this theme was appropriate because of the many changes of fashion, movies, T.V. shows, and current events. This year ' s fashion took a massive turn— acid-washed denims were all the rage; Spuds MacKenzie made his mark; Reebok ' s were still steppin ' in style, and guess what ' s next! Pee Wee ' s Playhouse was the kid ' s favorite Saturday morning show. Madonna was still busting out on the charts, while groups like Whitesnake, The Fat Boys, and L.L. Cool J were making their mark. Comebacks were made by U2, Boston, and Starship. Dynasty and Dallas are on their way out in T.V. shows, but Bill Cosby and his family are still in the top ten while LA Law is really working its way up the list. The theaters were hot this summer with Eddie Murphy ' s Beverly Hills Cop II , Arnold Schwarzanagger was in the ratings with Predator , and La Bamba was ringing in the cash. Dirty Dancing , Stakeout , and Dream Warriors were also making it big. There were many current events this year. For many days people couldn ' t watch their favorite soap operas because the Iran Contra hearings were being televised. Oliver Ollie North became everyone ' s hero. Detroit airport became well known because of the Flight 225 Northwest Airlines crash. It was the second worst crash in the world. The Catholics around the world were honored with Pope John Paul II and his World tour. But let ' s not forget Robert Bork being up for nomination for U.S. Supreme Court Justice — will the Senate approve him or not? The one thing I ' d really like to say to my class, the class of 88 , is we came in winning and went out winning in taking Spirit Week by storm. Remember the winning float?! As I close this letter, I want to thank the whole yearbook staff — it wouldn ' t have been the best yearbook yet without them. 7A Q-cLi ' b t 87 Hit ' - fl r ' jU Jr CX- ' ij Xu ' CUIacJ uJa AuJ JT.d.U ' j, o J ha ■ pjfvO (AJCU) ysA ' ft - v nA vJ Or?A _ lAXmmS 4H Co-President: Jennifer Funk Co-President: Tracey Roy V. A A Senior can hold his head up high and be proud of what he has accomplished, or he can hang his head in disgrace because of some- thing he had done that was wrong. A Senior is someone who should be looked up to and respected, not someone to be laughed at or ridiculed. To be strong in mind, body and spirit is a prime goal of the 1988 Senior Class we hope that we will achieve that goal someday. In the future years of our lives. There will be many failures made in one way or another, but if we keep pushing on and strive for something else we will find success. And if we really work hard to achieve it, we can hold our head up high and proudly say I ' ve done it. I ' ve finally done it. Then work to reach other goals. If someone is a failure it is by his own doing, by giving up and accepting that he is what he has made of himself, nothing. Being a student here at Yale High, through good times and bad, I ' ve always found a friend. In Memory of . . . Christopher A. McGuire 1970-1988 Holy Sonnet 10 Death, be not proud, though some have called thee Mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so; For those whom thou think ' st thou dost overthrow Die not, poor Death, nor yet canst thou kill me. From rest and sleep, which but thy pictures be. Much pleasure; then from thee much more must flow. And soonest our best men with thee do go. Rest of their bones, and soul ' s delivery. Thou art slave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men. And dost with poison, war, and sickness dwell. And poppy or charms can make us sleep as well And better than thy stroke; why swell ' st thou then? One short sleep past, we make eternally. And death shall be no more; Death, thou shalt die. B? We will be quite involved with Homecoming and then Blood Drives and a Food Drive at Christmas. We also will be hav- ing a Student Council Exchange Day, where members will be able to go to different schools to learn how they operate. Also, we will be organizing a Foreign Ex- change Student Day. So, we will be quite busy throughout the whole year. Student Council President oJtJ Christy Wilt The 1988 Student Council had another successful Canned Food Drive, just one of the many activ- ities the Student Council does during the year. Yearbook stu- dents put a lot of hard work and deter- mination into the yearbook that you are now looking at. There is a lot of dedication put out by these people. Our chief editors, Julie Starkweather, Wendi Taylor, and Jennie Funk, keep pushing us to meet our deadlines. This class is not the breeze of a class everyone seems to think that it is. Writing articles, shooting photos, typing and organizing pages aren ' t the easiest things to get done. We work very hard to bring you a special yearbook ev- ery year. Helpers hat do you have for me to do? What shall I do next? These are some of the things that you would probably hear a cadet teacher saying to the teachers that he she is helping. Cadet teachers run errands, correct papers, and record grades for their teachers. This can help the teacher to have more time to prepare his her lesson plans and help out the students if the teach- ers seem to appreciate these stu- dents if they work hard and take the job seriously. Mrs. Wilier stat- ed, They ' re great! I don ' t know what I ' d do without them. Mr. Presnell said, I think they ' re a great value, they provide a great service to man and mankind. Block and T ackle M any things are needed to succeed in football, but blocking and tack- ling are the two basics for a suc- cessful football team. With thirty players on the squad the bulldogs ran a two platoon system without much luck. Finishing the grid season 1- 8 overall and 6th in the S.T.A. League, the bulldogs never once gave up striving on every posses- sion for a touchdown. The talent of the offensive backs, Steve Teichow, Brain Dambacher, and Dan LaMay, along with the Big Men up front made for a potent offensive attack. Leading the Bulldogs rushing was Brian Dambacher with 604 yards followed by Steve Teichow with 439. The offensive also turned in a great passing performance throughout the season, throwing 29 complete passes for 510 yards. This years defensive attack was led by the combination of Senior Todd Arnold, with an outstand- ing 94 tackles, and Senior Doug Mason, with 48 tackles. With Todd racking up tackles and Doug with his great tackling technique, the Bulldogs stuffed many footballs down a lot of op- ponents throats. Four members of the squad this year received awards for their efforts. Senior Jeff Caplinger re- ceived this years Coach Award. Senior Todd Arnold won the Outstanding Defensive Player, and Senior Brian Dambacher and Steve Teichow were awarded Outstanding Offensive players of the year. The Varsity team will be high- ly competitive in the years to come. Go for it. Bulldogs!!!! Running off the field with lots of enthusiasm is Junior Ed Milam. Senior Brian Dambacher runs it up the middle hoping for a Yale touchdown. Hoping for a score from the Bulldogs offense are Senior Ed Bradley and Junior Mike McDuffie. Going from 0-7 the previous year to 4-4 overall and 3-3 in the league. This was impressive consider- ing the Bulldogs had no home field advantages. They still amazed everyone in their quest for their league title. Al- though they fell short, the Bulldogs took third place. The offensive attack was led by Scott Porrett whose talent and speed helped him gain over thirteen hundred yards and score an impressive one hundred and four total points. Freshman Steve Pratt contrib- uted to the offense with 4.8 yards per carry and thirty eight points. This year ' s defensive squad held many opponents to short yardage. Sophomore Brent Ar- nold paced the Bulldogs with fifty-seven hard-hitting tackles, and Mark Snider made a fine effort with forty-five tackles. This season ' s co-captains were Tom Vincent and Scott Porrett who were presented with trophies. The Mr. Hustle award went to Mark Snider for his outstanding ability. Head Coach Karen Schneck, taught the Bulldogs many fine points and the squad turned in a great season. Leading the spikers this year were captains Julie Fisher and Tracey Roy, both Seniors. Julie, an all around player, was the team ' s leading spiker. Tracey played the setting position and did a great job. T his years wrestlerette squad wasn ' t a very large one but; nevertheless, they showed a lot of enthusiasm and spirit toward the wrestling team. Many people do not know what the wrestlerettes do. Their main purpose is to support the wrestling team. Supporting the team consists of many early mornings and late nights. Long hours are spent watching matches, taking stats, and cheering. One of the biggest jobs for a Yale Wrestlerette is working at the Yale Invitational to make it successful. Wrestlerettes are self supported and raise their funds by candy sales and dances. If you enjoy supporting the wrestling team then being a wrestlerette is a lot of fun! Margie Milam, Becky Peltier, Colleen Ciesinski, Michelle Weindl, Karen Thompson, Carmen Ryan, Laura Brdak B alance, consistency, and quickness — these are among a few traits needed for a quality tennis player. Although the team ' s record didn ' t show it, these Bulldogs worked hard every serve and ended with many close matches. As a two-year veteran, sopho- more Don Anderson thought the team worked together. I thought we worked hard every match. Our record wasn ' t very good this season, but we all played hard. While the season progressed, so did some players. Todd Arm- strong improved a lot and ended up with the Most Improved Player Award . I played twice a week to try to improve on my game. While Todd was improving his game, the combination of senior Jeff Jasmer and sophomore Erik Eide was going strong. With strong back hands, the duo handled their opponents with an 11-9 season. Jeff and I played well together, and that ' s what you need for a winning doubles team. The Bulldogs most valuable player was Denny Roy, Denny stood first in the singles for Yale. He had every quality for an ex- cellent tennis player, and he put forth the effort to win. This Spring ' s tennis team ended with a 2-8 overall record, but had a lot of talent to use. Leading the offense was Junior Jennie Funk and Senior Julie Vandenbossche with .619 and .468 batting aver- ages respectively. Julie Fisher, Ju- nior, also showed how to use a bat with a .429 batting average. Yale ' s defense was a big key to its game with Junior Jennie Funk who compiled a 24-4 win-loss record on the mound. Coach Robinson feels next year is the year to possibly regain the S.T.A. title. With all the emotion that goes with it Junior Jennie Funk pitches another strike. Senior Steve Huffman slugged nine homeruns, while Senior Tom Kean chipped in with a great pitching record, be- ing the top pitcher on the team. Last tri-captain, sophomore John Donnellon played a solid defense at third base. The varsity team had plenty of talent which included the start and relief pitching of Ed Bradley and Scott Hansen.
