True Colors— that ' s this year ' s yearbook theme. We think it ' s appropriate because we feel everyone would be themselves and be proud of it. Our main goal with this yearbook is to help you recall some of the more memo- rable moments of the past year; locally, nationally, and internationally. When the school year started in September, it did so with two millage defeats; no buses, 5 hour days, and no Freshmen sports. The millage was defeated for a third time after the beginning of the school year and another election was set for December. 1986 was a hot year for Reeboks, Max Headroom, and Teddy Ruxpin. It wasn ' t such a great year for the kids from the Cabbage Patch, or those little blue creatures, the Smurfs. Being a Valley was definitely out, as were wearing crop pants and getting a mohawk. Dying your hair orange also seemed to lose some of its appeal in 1986. New groups such as Glass Tiger and the Outfield made nitches for themselves in ' 86, sharing the spotlight with such old favorites as Madonna, The Eurythmics, and Chicago ' s Peter Cetera. Madonna was certainly busy in ' 86. Not only was she recording an album, but she also made a movie with real life husband Sean Penn called Shanghai Surprise. Fortunately, for the Penns, at least Madonna ' s album was a top seller. T.V. wise. The Cosby Show started its second season where it left off — in the number one spot. Moonlighting was still a favorite, but Miami Vice began to slip in the ratings (is that why Don Johnson took up singing?), as did Hill Street Blues and the nightly soaps Dynasty and Knots Landing. The biggest joke of the T.V. season, though, had to be the Dallas ciiffhanger. Having killed off Bobby Ewing (Patrick Duffy) two seasons previously, and then slipping greatly in the ratings, Dallas brought back Bobby, telling us that his death was greatly an exaggerated dream of his wife ' s, Pam. The 1986 Mary Lou Retton award has to go to Chicago Bears Quarterback, Jim McMahon, who was seen selling everything from tacos to motorcycles. And were those Bears hot! After an almost perfect season, McMahon and his teammates, among them William The Refrigerator Perry, won the Superbowl and became overnight heros. But let ' s not count out the New York Mets, this year ' s World Series victors, who came from two games down to beat the Boston Red Sox in an exhausting, but exciting, 7 game series. On a more serious note, 1986 was the year Pres. Ronald Reagan and the U.S. dropped bombs on terrorist- backed Libya, headed by madman Mohamar Khadafi, also The House and Senate overrode a Presidential veto to approve sanctions against South Africa in response to their policy on apartheid. It was also the year for the unsuccessfully successful (depending on who you ' re listening to) Iceland Summit between Reagan and Soviet Premiere Mikhail Gorbachev. The one thing I ' m going to remember about this year, though, is that my class, the class of ' 87, won their first high school pep assembly, but did we stop there? NO! We not only won Spirit Week but for the second year in a row, our Homecoming Float won first place! Before I end this letter. I ' d like to thank all of the members of the yearbook staff — for all of the work they have done, without them, this yearbook never would have been com- pleted. ( C
