We think it ' s appropriate because we feel everyone would be themselves and be proud of it. Our main goal with this yearbook is to help you recall some of the more memo- rable moments of the past year; locally, nationally, and internationally. When the school year started in September, it did so with two millage defeats; no buses, 5 hour days, and no Freshmen sports. The millage was defeated for a third time after the beginning of the school year and another election was set for December. 1986 was a hot year for Reeboks, Max Headroom, and Teddy Ruxpin. It wasn ' t such a great year for the kids from the Cabbage Patch, or those little blue creatures, the Smurfs. Being a Valley was definitely out, as were wearing crop pants and getting a mohawk. Dying your hair orange also seemed to lose some of its appeal in 1986. New groups such as Glass Tiger and the Outfield made nitches for themselves in ' 86, sharing the spotlight with such old favorites as Madonna, The Eurythmics, and Chicago ' s Peter Cetera. Madonna was certainly busy in ' 86. Not only was she recording an album, but she also made a movie with real life husband Sean Penn called Shanghai Surprise. Fortunately, for the Penns, at least Madonna ' s album was a top seller. T.V. wise. The Cosby Show started its second season where it left off — in the number one spot. Moonlighting was still a favorite, but Miami Vice began to slip in the ratings (is that why Don Johnson took up singing?), as did Hill Street Blues and the nightly soaps Dynasty and Knots Landing. The biggest joke of the T.V. season, though, had to be the Dallas ciiffhanger. Having killed off Bobby Ewing (Patrick Duffy) two seasons previously, and then slipping greatly in the ratings, Dallas brought back Bobby, telling us that his death was greatly an exaggerated dream of his wife ' s, Pam. The 1986 Mary Lou Retton award has to go to Chicago Bears Quarterback, Jim McMahon, who was seen selling everything from tacos to motorcycles. And were those Bears hot! After an almost perfect season, McMahon and his teammates, among them William The Refrigerator Perry, won the Superbowl and became overnight heros. But let ' s not count out the New York Mets, this year ' s World Series victors, who came from two games down to beat the Boston Red Sox in an exhausting, but exciting, 7 game series. On a more serious note, 1986 was the year Pres. Ronald Reagan and the U.S. dropped bombs on terrorist- backed Libya, headed by madman Mohamar Khadafi, also The House and Senate overrode a Presidential veto to approve sanctions against South Africa in response to their policy on apartheid. It was also the year for the unsuccessfully successful (depending on who you ' re listening to) Iceland Summit between Reagan and Soviet Premiere Mikhail Gorbachev. The one thing I ' m going to remember about this year, though, is that my class, the class of ' 87, won their first high school pep assembly, but did we stop there? NO! We not only won Spirit Week but for the second year in a row, our Homecoming Float won first place! Before I end this letter. I ' d like to thank all of the members of the yearbook staff — for all of the work they have done, without them, this yearbook never would have been com- pleted. ( C 4 5 i v -V A v s - : ' y s V ' Students young and old participated in Spirit Week in preparation for the big game. Spirit Week started with Oops, I Got up Late Day on Monday. Tuesday saw students wearing their favorite college or concert sweats and shirts. Wednesday was Beach and Surfer Day, as people came to school in their shorts and shirts with colors that could blind you. On Thursday, the halls were filled with all sorts of | creatures as Costume and Halloween Day passed. The traditional Blue and White day finally arrived with eager anticipation to the game. This year ' s SENIORS were the winners of the Spirit jug, and the float competition. This year ' s Homecoming Court consisted of I Freshmen Scott Porrett and Tricia Ronan. The Soph- I omore reps, were Mark Lawrence and Stacey McIn- tyre. Representing the Juniors were Bob Holley and Linda Cletcher, Tom Ruedisueli and Colette Dujardin. The Senior candidates were Steve McIn- tyre, Chuck Neubert, and Tom Kean. The Queen candidates were Loretta White, Kristin Manns, and Stephanie Shaieb. The 1986 Homecoming King and Queen were Tom Kean and Loretta White. The Bulldogs lost the game 28-12 in a hard- fought contest against Memphis. Steve Huffman scored all of Yale ' s points with fine running. Brian , Dambacher also played well for Yale. Homecoming came to an end with a very successful dance, in which over 300 people attend- 7 Seniors, you ' ve finally 4 v made it. You ' re at the top and there ' s no one bet- ter than you. For years you ' ve been here in high school, and now it ' s [almost over. Three years of friends you ' ve lost, and now it ' s happening to you. Reality ' is already slipping into place around you, preparing you for work, marriage, and col- leges clamoring all over. This year is both a sad and a happy time. You may cheer while you throw your cap into the air, then burst into tears looking at the face of a good friend you might never see again. May the years you ' ve spent here prepare you well. « Live Long and Prosper Seniors. Good Luck! f • V - « JT I H y. With one year left we are beginning to plan for our years ahead. Day by day we are getting closer to being seniors and leaving the friends we know behind. While we are here for our remaining high school years, we should all make the best of what we have. So ... live your life to the fullest and dream the impossible. Here ' s to us . . . the JUNIORS!!! _ r t W: 7 ' i J iff! n ®L 13 V ' i 4 V ; Sr N U Once you ' re a Sophomore, you ' ve risen slightly in the eyes of the other students. But only slightly. You still get picked on by the Juniors and the Seniors, though not to quite such an extent, and your on consolation is that you ' ve got someone you can pick on now, too. As a Sophomore, you get your first real taste of high • school life. With driver ' s training you don ' t have to always depend on mom and dad for a ride, and you don ' t feel so self-conscious around the upperclassmen. • All in all, being a Sophomore isn ' t too totally bad.” Fact is, it ' s definitely better than being a Freshman! m -• - V L ii A- ' i As a high school Freshman, you get treated with about as much respect as an ant at a pic- nic. Well, maybe it ' s not quite that bad, but ev- ery time a calamity occurs in the hall, or in the parking lot, or at lunch, the other students — blame it on a Freshman. In fact, it ' s not un- common to hear the other students, especially the Seniors, discussing how much better life would be without Freshmen. They conve- niently like to forget that only four short years before, they too had been so despised. Yes, the life of a Freshman is not an easy one. But it ' s not all bad either. Being a Fresh- man is a new and exciting experience. You are tie tricks you can pull on the next year ' s Fresh- men. Hello! My name is Tracey Roy and I am the Junior class President. The other officers representing our class this year are: Joanne Hachenski— Vice Presi- dent, Carrie Rapp— Secretary, and Krystal Meredith— Treasurer. Our advi- sors this year are Mr. Little and Mr. Schrand. This is Mr. Schrand ' s first year at Yale High School, and we greatly appreciate him for taking the big responsibility of our class advisor. One goal this year is to raise money for our senior prom. We are plan- ning on having dances and selling candy. We hope it will be a big success. Our first project, which was in October, was building our homecoming float. The theme for our Homecoming float was Inspection 12-Hanes Un- derwear! We all worked hard, but ended up in third place. Now we will work harder striving for first place our Senior year. One of the high points of our Junior year was winning the competition Victory Cry Cheer at the Homecoming pep assembly. I would like to thank the Junior Class, and to all those who participated in the making of our Homecoming float. One of their major goals was to try for the State Compe- tition, but they were unsuccessful. This year ' s team is relatively young with only one Senior. Next year ' s team should have a little more exper- ience and a more successful season. Equestrian team is open to all who want to join. This year, everyone on the team owns her own horse. It is a lot of fun for those who enjoy horses and are dedicated, and don ' t mind hard work. They went to two meets as a class B team which is less than 10 members. Both the meets were held in Goodells. At their 1st meet, they came in 4th place, and at their 2nd meet, they came in 3rd place. The advisor this year is Mrs. Dori Burke. The N.H.S. members tutor students from all grades at no charge. They also sponsor a sixth grade enrichment program, held in the spring, during which they built rockets, develop photographs and study the human anatomy. Toward the end of the year, the National Honor Society goes on a learning field trip. Past field trips include Washington D.C., Niagra Falls, and ca- noe trips. The National Honor Society members contribute their time and energy to Yale High School. Shhh!!! A few of the tasks assigned to the Student Library Staff during the course of any given day is checking out books, slipping books, fil- ing, clipping, shelving, typing, straightening, pulling cards, and running errands. Often they are surprised at all the work there is to do in the Library and how infrequently they get to just sit at the desk and read. Accuracy in the performance of all work is stressed. Stu- dent staff members are required to be friendly, courteous, and business like in working with teachers and their fellow students. These stu- dents are truely indispensible to the operation of the Bulldog Think Tank. Their jobs may seem like unimportant tasks, but they allow the secretaries to do more time-consuming and complicated work. Office aids must be responsible, honest, and caring students. They run errands, transfer phone calls throughout the school, and help organize the office. They also run errands for teachers, xerox materials, deliver important phone messages to teachers or students, and they deliver messages from the Counciling Office to the students. They learn to meet the public, prepare for the future, and be good- will ambassadors for the school. Setting a Mental Pace Pace is the program for academic curricular enrichment. Students in grades nine through twelve are se- lected as participants based upon their grades and standardized test scores. The purpose of the program is to offer students an opportunity to study subjects in depth that are not normally available in the curriculum. Last year ' s topic was flight, the students built model air- planes, study how airplanes func- tion, and studied the historical de- velopment of manned-flight. This year ' s major topic is law, the group has planned mock trivials, debates, and several appropriate field trips to better understand how laws are formed and enforced. Additionally, the group is planning to serve as the nucleus for a play production to be presented this year. If you want to acquire the knowl- edge of foreign countries, and broaden your horizons, then the Spanish Club is for you. Mi Amigo. There are sixty-five people in the Spanish Club. We generally have one to two meetings per month and at least one activity. We earn money by selling Love-A-Grams and Smuffets, plus having a dance and a car wash. Spanish Club President, Amy Becker Yale Teacher ' s Valuable Resources Here at Yale, Cadet Teachers are a valuable resource to all of our teach- ing staff. With the help of these ca- dets, teachers are able to spend more time teaching their classes and less time doing odd jobs which take them away from the needs of their students. Instead of the teachers having to check and file all their own papers, cadets will do this for them. They also take attendance, run errands, and help organize the teacher ' s room and desk. With these cadets, many teachers are able to spend more time with their students or give more individual help to the students who need it. The season started slow but quickened as they rolled to a season ending 44-12 victory over Richmond. Leading Yale ' s large yardage game was the trio of Steve Huffman, Brian Dambacher and Dan Lamay. The team also worked as a well oiled machine in their passing game. This was a surprise to the Bulldog fans. So looking forward to the following season Yale foot- ball finishes with a 2-7 record. Junior Brian Dambacher breaks around end, as he picks up some good yardage. Yale ' s defensive line surges forward to put a halt to Memphis ' s bid for a touchdown. This years team should keep the fu- ture Varsity teams strong and talented. The Bulldogs were led by Ju- nior Tony Toton who was among the team leaders with his batting average. Also hitting well for Yale were Sophomores Eric Beiber and Todd Arnold. Yale was also blessed with some talented Freshmen some of which are Mike McCulley, and Clint DeVought. Ed Bradley and McCulley also handled the pitching duties along with Roger Welsh. These players along with many others should provide a contending Varsity squad for next season. Crossing home plate is 14 Tony Toton, in a victory against New Haven. 115 The Baseball Blues Sliding under the tag is 9 Mike Simmons in a 6-5 victory over New Haven. Following in the footsteps of a league champ can be a tough task. This years Varsity squad may not have brought home a championship trophy, but did manage to play some exciting and thrilling games. Yale was led by Senior Steve Bond who earned All Blue Water Area honors with a .520 batting average. Brian Rykowski and Jim Meharg, both Seniors, contributed .250 and .257 batting averages, re- spectively. Junior Tom Kean was the man on the mound for Yale, pitching in 76.3 innings, and also contributed a .300 batting average. This stuttering savant of the computer worlds greeting of ' H-h-hi there, M-M-Max Headroom here! These stylish bands of color were found across the wrists of student and teacher alike. The general style was comfortable and loose. Long untucked shirts and long pant legs tucked into colorful socks seem to be in among the girls. A pair of 501 ' s in blue, grey, or white and a loose sweatshirt or sweater was the norm with the guys. There were sparkling pins and bolo ties at the neck, and lace up boots at the foot. Temporary hair colors and gels were used to add splash and light to the years fashions. Bold prints on basically everything, Reboks, and oversized shirts were also very popular this year. And thats the way it was, full of color, light and comfort. 123 Bruce Springsteen Robin Williams Jim McMahon All Photos Courtesy of the P.H. All Photos Courtesy of the P.H. The top two shows Bill Cosby ' s The Cosby Show and Family Ties with Michael J. Fox were both from NBC as were Cheers, Night Court, The Golden Girls, L.A. Law, and Crime Story. NBC even had late night television tied up with Johnny Carson, David Letterman and David Brenner — all having hit shows. This was to the chagrin of Joan Rivers whose own new show was met with lukewarm reviews and poor ratings. 126 Aliens with Sigorney Weaver, and Back to School with Rodney Dangerfield (pic. below) were two of the years biggest hits, but the three major box office smashes were Top Gun , with Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis, Stand by Me a Rob Reiner Film, and Crocodile Dundee an Australian Import. Other big hits were The Fly , Star Trek IV and Ferris Bueller ' s Day Off. George Lucas, Howard the Duck, Sean Penn and Ma- donna ' s Shanghai Surprise, and House took top honors in the lemon cate- gory.
