1968 BULLDOG Yale High School Yale, Michigan Much Effort Goes Into The 1968 Bulldog introduces you to the wonderful world of the theater and drama. It has been said that drama is the book ol people and that’s what our yearbook is. Our theater is new— Yale High School. Most of our drama takes place here but some scenes are played in the dairy bar, some in the Mem- orial Park. But wherever, we are the characters, the cast. Our teachers and administration play roles similar to those of the director and producer of a play— one makes the production decisions, obtains financial backing for the play; the other works to bring out values and meaning through the actors. The stars, of course, are the Seniors who have had the most experience and therefore take the leading roles in our play. The stage crew is behind the scenes working-clubs, sports, the action, the workers who receive little credit for much work. The people practicing to be actors, the understudy, the apprentices are found in the junior high where they first move from class to class, first have a student council and their own dances. They will soon move up to become part of the cast of the high school. And our last chapter is the pa- trons who support the play with their money and good will. So sit back and look through our drama, the 1968 BULL- DOG. Creating a New Setting JT 7 • ' X A new theater offers exciting prospects. While the cast is rehearsing in the old school, the builders and carpenters are busy creating the set-new large classrooms, adequate light- ing, new properties. So after a year of practice we moved in- to a theater which was not quite finished. The stage mana- gers, the master of properties, the coaches all have last minute details to check. A trial run, much like taking a play out of town to iron out the bugs before the Broadway opening, takes place. So you can see the contrast-the old, the new; the building, piles of boards, wheelbarrows, empty halls; then Our New Theater Charlie raises the flag, like the curtain rising, and the show goes on. Whether or not the play is a hit depends on the co- operation of the entire ; the producers, the directors, the stars, the cast, the crew and the patrons. And we think that YALE HIGH SCHOOL is a HIT! Yale High School Mrs. Brown Retires from Directing The students and faculty of Yale High School are proud and honored to dedicate the 1968 year- book to Mrs. Brown who has taught the last fifteen years of her thirty years teaching career in Yale. She had been successful and well liked as a teacher as well as a per- son. She received her B.A. degree in 1926 from Adrian College, then did post graduate work at Central Michigan University, Eastern Mich- igan University and the University of Michigan. So, as with her classes she shows through her life and work that we must never stop learning. She has taught English nine and ten, Remedial reading, and French. For many students she cast a light on their seemingly dark future through her constant encourage- ment and influence. She preferred honesty and de- termination more in a person than any other quality. Students looked upon her as a wise woman in many senses of the word. One student was overheard in the hall saying, “I like her, she gave me a lot of breaks.” She gave students the chance to make somethingof them- selves by “letting” them, not “mak- ing” them. We are happy that she can retire to enjoy her husband and the farm, but we hope she comes back to visit YHS once in a while because we will miss her. 4 5 RICK ARMSTRONG “Rick” Course: Gen. Awarded for academic excellence this year are the Se- niors with the highest grade point averages, Valedictorian Walter Parry (below) and Salutatorian, Kathy Seaton (lower left). Both have followed a college prep, course and been active members of their class. Walter was in both the junior and senior plays, a student council member and a band member. Kathy has been a class officer and an officer in the F.H.A.; she was a member of the drama club and the junior play cast and the Pep club; and she represented her class on Homecoming Court this year. Kathy also received the D.A.R. Award. Iff 20 Curtain Cal Mr. Jay Eldred, superintendent of Yale Schools, ad- dresses the capacity crowd at the 1968 Commencement ex- ercises. Graduation exercises began Friday, June 7 with Class Day. Those who won in the mock elections were an- nounced; the class will, prophecy and history were read and lastly, the class gifts were presented. Baccalaureate services were held in the gym Sunday, June 9 with the Rev. Mr. H.L. Matteson, pastor of the United Missionary Church, deliver- ing the message. The Commencement, itself, at which Dr. Lowell Eklund spoke was held June 12. After turning in their caps and gowns, the Seniors got together for the an- nual Senior Party at the Elementary School. 21 The Wonderful World of the Young 4 . DANCING IN THE DARK Spring Enchantment The Senior Prom, Spring Enchantment, was beautiful this year-complete with a sidewalk cafe, a wishing well and a star studded night. The guest list included many famous names. Entertainment was provided by “The Words.” We were served a lovely luncheon by Mrs. Thomas (a great dan- cer, right?) and Mrs. Weston at the sidewalk cafe. Then back to the dance floor. As usual the Seniors outdid themselves— they have consistently had the best decorations-both for dances and floats. And SPRING ENCHANTMENT proved no exception! PRODUCERS and DIRECTORS A Good Production Staff Mr. Kells helps set the cornerstone on our new theater of Mr. Jay Eldred, Superintendent of Yale Public Schools, operations. Mr. Franklin Kells is president of the Yale Board of Ed- ucation. Other members are Robert J. Meikle, vice-presi- dent; Ted Molesworth, secretary; Robert H. Bricker, trustee; William J. Fenton, trustee; William M. Reid, trustee; Gary W. Schroeder, trustee. Producers Goals “Education is a Pride; a Goal; a Means to an End; it is ALL things.” Only Education can provide an answer to the ills of society— the Role of education encompasses all things. If we are to properly deal with the basic moral issues of the day— The rights of the individual, so- ciety’s responsibility to all people, the governmen- tal role in our society, and the interpretation of democratic freedom— it becomes increasingly ap- parent that education must prepare us to evaluate and establish those principles which will insure the future. Man’s education cannot be left to chance. The educational system is specialized in the production of people not manpower! If education is to flourish the government and the public have to be convinced that the resources must be found. Only good schools can determine whether the American dream can be fulfilled for all children re- gardless of circumstances. In spite of long centuries of education in his- tory— we are probably on a greater threshold of Frontiership than we have ever seen. Mrs. Bev Brown, Bookkeeper Miss Vera Hoskins, secretary. Provides a Fine Program MR. JAMES MARTIN-High School Principal busy look- ing over some work at his desk. Mr. Martin is a good friend to all-he always has a friendly smile and a wave for us as he walks through the hallways. He is the kind of man who is fair in punishment when it is needed and easy to talk to when we have a problem. He attends most of our school functions, not out of duty, but because he likes us. And we want to thank him for being “our kind of people” (that should, however, be said with a southern accent). Mrs. Rose Edgerton is Mr. Martin’s secretary and in charge of the student secretaries. MR. JOHN WARK-High School Counselor. Here is the man who helps with our schedules, our problems, sees to it that we get the necessary scholarships, the right applica- tion to the right school so that we may continue becom- ing. An if you ever want to see a man about a good joke to tell, now that Stu Cole is gone, see Mr. Wark! Mrs. Betty Halsey is Mr. Wark’s secretary (lucky man!) Did you ever see her frown? Betty always has a smile for every- one-even when she tells you Mr. Wark is busy. Mr. John Mitchell— Band Director Did you ever see anyone who was always so cheer- ful? The Directors Led Mr. Richard Wiersma, Jr.-Bookkeeping and Short- hand and Adult Education. Someone just interrupted his class. Wonder if he means us? The director, the teacher, the gadfly, the guide. The director is the person on whom the success or failure of the play depends. He is responsible for the unification of all production elements-the learning process, both subject matter and social ac- tivities. He must be an able guide with the right questions and the right answers. He must care about people for a good play presents a problem and lets the audience watch the solution and then teaches him to judge the outcome. It takes patience and love to let someone work out his own problem. The Yale High School Band, under the direction of Mr. Jack Mitchell, has provided our musical background well this year. They hosted the County Band Festival which was attended by many and enjoyed by all. It was an all- day practice under the direction of a guest director. They worked hard that day, but knew that it was worth it all. It is safe to say that we have a top-qual- ity band and should be proud of it. 52 Yale High School Band The Pep Band was newly formed this year. Cymbal clash, drum roll and the Vale team takes the court. It seems much easier to cheer with the wild sup- port of the band. Among the numbers performed was a lullabye “Jesus, Jesus Rest Your Head’’ in which Diane Beach did a fine job as soloist. On April 2nd, the girls boarded the bus in the morning to start on their way to Port Huron Northern. At one o’clock in the afternoon they began a three-hour rehearsal in prepara- tion for the evening performance. There were more than 1000 participants from the schools of St. Clair County performing for the Festival. The girl’s ended their season with a successful Spring Concert in the month of April. 54 Future Nurses Form a New Unit Back row: Linda Holsworth, Linda Burton, Lee Ann Wixon, Kathy Fasal, Ruth Houle. Homecoming ’67 . . . The Leading Man and Lady, King Jim Brown Queen Trudy Conley With the junior members of the court, Kelle Liebler and Jeff Martin, last year’s queen Jan McGaw waits to intro- duce the star, the 1967 Homecoming Queen. Our director, Coach Anderson, gives advice. 58 . . . A Parade of Stars The Homecoming’s theme this year was movies or television shows. Just by looking at the floats you can tell how clever the students were. These take a lot of time and effort and all the classes, though they didn’t win a prize, deserve high esteem. Our court was hailed royally on this beautiful float made especially for stars by the student council. The Seniors’ “The Unsinkable Malcomb Bulldog” took first place in our annual float competition. The Sophomores with “We’ll Run ’Em Barefoot in the Park” took second place honors. Our third place winner, the Juniors’ “The Flying Bulldog.” Seventh grade’s “The Shaggy Dog.” 59 Gone - Glimmering Through Besides being “cold”, Trudy was certainly surprised. The 8th graders piled on their float, “The Magnificent Bulldogs and Their Winning Machine. It was cold that night, but we sat there, freezing, and cheered our boys out there on the field knowing they were out there for us, not just for the “fun.” Even though they were unable to break the Saints’ barrier, we are still proud, and always will be, of our team. Our boys fought with all their might but they just couldn’t quite outrun those Saints. The 9th grade did a fine job with their, “The Hanging Tree.” 60 the Dream of Things That Were Our court for the King and Queen was beautiful this year, not to mention handsome. They were— seated: Connie Hansman (1 1th), Kay Kammer (10th), Kathy Seaton (1 2th), King Jim, Queen Trudy, Sandy Clyne (12th), Diane Bul- lock (1 1th), Mary Jo Lashbrook (9th). Standing: Robbie Halsey (1 1th), Randy Richards (10th), Ben Steinhoff (12th), Bill Smith ( 1 2th), Claude Bedy (11th), Pete Wiegand (9th). Poor Jeff Martin had a little problem with the crown but it didn’t bother him. The 1967 Homecoming is over. For some, it was their last. It is sad when something slips through your fingers never to come back. But life goes on not waiting for anyone to catch up. You’ve just got to keep up. As we end the show, we know a little more about life, but there’s still much to learn. Our mascot, Malcomb, is shown here with Linda Fagen. 61 The Show Is Done for 1967 62 STAGE CREW Sail on for Dear Yale High Yale’s fight song-Yale’s cheers-Yale’s pep and spirit — This is the job of our cheerleaders. These girls work on their own time practicing, making signs, selling tickets to games, and attending all games. They are also in charge of planning and running all pep assemblies. THEY deserve our cheers. An exciting moment for the Bulldogs as the girls cheer is pictured at the upper left. We can fill the gym when we all turn out for the Bulldogs as you can see. The graduating Seniors, the coaching staff and those of us who are real football fans are hopefully assured that the attitudes and skills, the sweat and pain, the bitterness of de- feat, and the glory of victory, were not in vain. Where each boy stood, a man stands now. A wonderful game, this foot- ball-even without the taste of victory. But there is next year . . . A TOUGH GAME A ROUGH CALL 67 Yale Bulldogs Triumph Had one of their best years we’ve had in years. We played some tough teams and played hard. We cheered at some close games and cheered hard. We had some close calls and took them like the good sports that we are. We lost some good players this year like Bill Strenk, captain (right), Ben Steinhoff (below), Harlan Ginrich, Keith Lossing, Stew Cole, Dave Gillian, and Don Harnden. Tough, good players. Bill alone gathered an average of 15.5 points a game. But the J.V.’s are working hard.
