But these hopes were to die at Sunnyside as the Bucs were destined to go no farther than the district tournament. The armor of the Pirate ship was pierced for the second consecutive year by the Highland Scottles The Bucs sailed out of port with a pre season win over the arch rival Wolves from Wapato to start what appeared to be a very prosperous season The Pirates continued their pre season domination of teams in the state which included wins over North Central of Spo kane Wenatchee Highllne of Seattle Seattle Prep and a victory over Walla Walla their long time rival The Pirates finished their pre league schedule with a second win over Wenatchee for an impressive record Mr 'luck lenmngs coach of seven wins and no losses From top rating in the state the Bucs began to drop in rank as the season developed into a most unusual one The taste of their first defeat at the hands of the Wapato Wolves was bitter and grew more distasteful as the Bucs lost four consecutive games played away from home lt was a season in which we won the wrong ones commented Coach Jack Jennings The performance turned In by the Pirates wasnt always borne out by the score board For example the games with Richland and Wapato were both chalked up as losses yet In both Instances the Pirates probably played their best games and scored more field goals than their opponents At Richland the Bucs dumped in 23 to the Bombers 19 but were defeated 65 59 The following night in spite of making 20 field goals to the Wolfpack s 19 Yakima lost again 54 53 The bulk of the scoring during the season was fairly equally divided among four regulars Bob Golphenee Bull Maples Steve Frye and Don Reeder all of them averaging 10 14 points a game An undue share of hindrances seemed to hoax the ball team Illness and lnlury In one form or another plagued the Pirates almost constantly from the middle of the season to its finish Steve Frye Royal Keith Bill Maples Cliff Monda and Don Reeder were all disabled at some time during the season Physically the Pirates were small as compared with Ot Hendrix Lgg ttT I A d F kS tt ls B ,Quai mgzfge, sqm managers mn we teams of other years Steve Frye being the tallest at But an overdose of determination made up for their handicaps and in third place Yakima moved into tournament play The Buccaneers drew the Cle Elum Warriors for their first game After coming from be hind in their true Cinderella fashion with a 20 point rally they eliminated Cle Elum 58 57 Then they stopped Selah s Vikings to qualify for the champion ship game But Yakima s fast rising expectations of traveling to Seattle were shattered with a 54 51 defeat 110 - F I I I ' .
