I-lS WE WERE V X Below, row one: Bill Frame, Mike Love? , Hapqy Carratt, George Cahoon and Lee Brauer were fourth grade basketball champions Row two is unidentified. , K 44 ri HISTUHY UF THE CLASS UF 1953 On September 5, 1950, we members of the class of 1953 invaded the halls of YHS to become the traditionally scorned sophomores. Class officers elected for that year were Ierry Yeager, president, Iohn Kingston, vice-president, Bev Martin, secretary, Dorothy McGrath, treasurer, Pat Eschbach, Girls' League representative, and Iim Cheshire, Boys' League representative. A year later, as mighty juniors, we chose for our officers Iohn Kingston, president, Dick Ander- son, vice-president, Pat Eschbach, secretary, Richard Kukay, treasurer, Nancy Rew, Girls' League representative, and Les Vierra, Boys' League representative. Under their leadership we enthusias- tically sold tickets to the class play, The Whole Town's Talking . Iuniors who appeared in the hi- larious comedy, directed by Mrs. Lucille Balch, were Alan Villesvik, Dick Shelton, Marilynne Hooker, Don Lunceford, Kathy Lamb, Sue Bradley, and Esther Pinkal. Milanne Crownover was student di- rector. ln May, those attending the junior-senior reception danced amid silvery music notes. The theme of the dance, planned by the officers and committees with the help and guidance of Miss Sylvia Murray, class adviser, and Mr. D. D. Finley, Mr. Wilbur Magness, Mr. David Schoessler, and Mrs. Carmen Walker, assistant advisers, was Rhapsody in Blue . The junior class was honored at commencement as lim Purdin and Ierry Goff led the seniors to the strains of Pomp and Circumstancen. Bob Thurston was chosen Most Worthy Iunior and Mary Miller received the DAR history prize. Gaining honor of election to ASB offices for the following year were George Cahoon, president, Felicia Melero, vice-president, Sue Bradley, secretary, Pat Eschbach, treasurer, Don Rabung, inter- school commissioner, and Bob Thurston, publicity manager. The following September, the long awaited time had come. At last we were seniors. To lead us through the all-important year we chose as officers Ierry Goff, president, Dick Anderson, vice-presi- dent, Wanda Clemons, secretary, David Smithhisler, treasurer, Mary Allen, Girls' League represent- ative, and lim Cheshire, Boys' League representative. Earline Burks and Dick Haubrich reigned as Homecoming King and Queen. Princesses Wanda Clemons and Felicia Melero and princes Mel Swett and Dallas Treat completed the royal court. The class of 1953 received its share of awards as Mary Anne Schoessler and Alan Villesvik re- ceived first and second places, respectively, in the Roberts Memorial Contest. Mary Miller was chosen DAR Pilgrim and Sally Shaw was chosen the Girl Most Skilliul in Sports. Yakima valley sports fans voted versatile Don Rabung Male Athlete of the Year, thus bringing more honor to the senior class. With the coming of spring, lovely Earline Burks was chosen Yakima's Apple Blossom Princess. Beverly Buller, with an enviable straight A record, was our valedictorian. Iust a step below her was Mary Anne Schoessler, salutatorian. As we, like classes before us, marched to the strains of Pomp and Circumstanceu on the evening of Iune 5, we remembered our Wonderful high school years and hoped that YHS would not soon forget us. 45 'lv' ll An ,-,lil . Yakima's tootball squad ended its 1952 season with tive won and tour lost under Yl-lS's new coach, Mr. Bob McGuire. Playing a ninefgame schedule, the Pirates Won the city championship and the Big Red Apple. ln Yakimas first game ot the season, the Bucs retained the city championship by defeating Mar- quette, 32-2, at Davis Field. The tirst half yielded only one TD to Yakima, but in the second half Marquette couldn't hold the Yakima line and the Pirates surged ahead. The Bombers scored in the beginning two minutes of the game and held the Pirates with their strong line. Yak- ima was unable to go beyond the Richland five. The first Pirate Columbia Basin conference win in two seasons came against North Central of Spo- kane by a score of l4-12. The North Central team wasn't to be underestimated and the deciding factor was the two conversion points for Yakima. Kennewick went on the kill list as they met Yakima on their home field and were defeated 14-U by the hard-playing Bucs. Both Yakima tallies came in the first quarter. Kennewick strength- ened its defense in the second quarter, but couldn't pass Yakima's line. Romping over Wenatchee, l2-6, the Pirates regained the Big Red Apple. The two teams were tied, 6-6, in the third quarter when a 64-yard drive put Yakima ahead to stay until the final gun. Lewis and Clark handed Yakima a 20-U defeat at Spokane as they consistently broke through the Pirate line. Yakima couldnt get its offense in gear and failed to penetrate any farther than the LC lU-yard line. Several passes by Lewis and Clark added to the yardage against Yakima's weak- ened line. ln the homecoming game, Yakima overcame Iohn Rogers of Spokane, 31-13. The Iohn Rogers team jumped ahead by 6 points in the first quarter but failed to score again until the last period. Two of Yakima's scores were on lohn Rogers' fumbles. The Little Brown lug stayed at Walla Walla after the Pirates lost 33-7 to the Blue Devils. Walla Walla switched from running to aerial plays and outplayed Yakima throughout the game. Yak- ima's score was on a recovered fumble. ln the last game of the year, underdog Yakima nearly upset highly rated Gonzaga of Spokane. The score was tied until the last half, but Gonzaga caught fire after the halftime and surged ahead 34-14, Row one: Mike Haubrich, Clyde Easter, Bill Gray, Benny Brunner, Bill Crook, Bill Jones, Earl Silvers, Scotty Mills, Chris Martinez. eLanny Kuzminski flow two: Wilbert Jiles, Jack Spohn, Don Norris, Jim Polk, Doug Eims, Larry Mooney, Chris McDonald, Harrison Lee, Eddy Pleasant. Losing the first two games resulted in being dropped from the tournament, but the team had already won distinction by recovering from a bad start in pre- season games and winning the first five league games in succession. The first to fall in league play were the Wapato Wolves, who dropped their contest to the Pirates by a close 47-44 decision. Pasco followed with a 48-46 loss to Yakima, On the Sunnyside home floor, Yakima came from behind in the third quarter to defeat the lower valley quintet 51-47. Back DON CROOK CLIFF MONDA 106 . Taking to the road, Yakima visited Kennewick and swept over the Lions ESU-46 in one of the Pirates' highest scoring games. Still on the road, the Yakima five descended from the heights to the depths in Ellensburg where, in one of the lowest scoring games of the season, the Bulldogs overcame Yakima 38-33. ln the final league game with Richland, the Pirates lost, 55-5l, in an overtime period. This loss made it necessary for Yakima to play in the district tournament at Kennewick and Wapato. After de- feating Cle Elum, 54-48, and Selah, 52-48, Yakima gained its ticket to Seattle by trouncing Ellensburg 56-4l. ln the valley championship game with Richland, the Pirates lost the right to go to the state tour- nament as first team from the Yakima valley by dropping a heart-breaker with a 52-5l score, Dis- putes raged to and fro and probably will for many years to come over the stopping of the clock in the final moments of the game. Yakima is looking for a strong year in l954 as returning sophomores and juniors will tend to make up a stronger team than before.
