Thr' flnnual Pltfllilffllillll of the Yalrima Senior High School FQRE. CRD Silhouetted against the sky, our school eagerly awaits the autumn. During the fall, winter, and spring months, it is filled from Monday to Friday with laughing voices, quiet study halls, reciting classes, and all the other sounds that make up a day at school. It is close enough to Davis and Kumler fields to hear the cheering voices as our Pirates participate in athletics, an important part of our educational program. There are the weekends with programs, plays, and concerts in the auditorium, parties and dances in the gym, and once each year the Junior-Senior Reception is held in the gaily decorated library. Then, with the blossoming of trees, the return of the birds, and the warm rays of the sun, our school, with some reluctance, sees June approaching. Once again, as it does each year, a new class leaves, better prepared to take its place in society and to try to make the world a better place in which to live. May this record of the highlights, accomplishments, pleasant associations, and hopes of our last year together here at YHS reunite us in fond memories of our Hhigh school days . 2 1 5 f '1 I IA. ,r ,,f' ,rf I , ,y K 4. x 1 ' .' Our school is a democracy in which every student is a citizen. May your experience as a citizen in school today assist you in your life tomorrow. I hope and know that you will continue to live a life as full of worthwhile endeavor as you have lived while here in school. Rolla S. Goold, Principal As members of the class of 1950 you are to be congratulated for what you have ac- complished. We are proud of your work and hold high hopes for each of you. A span of some fifty years and a new cen- tury lies ahead of you. May you carry out from Yakima High such important qualities as straight thinking and clear vision. You will make good use of these before progress in World Peace is attained. Continue on with same strength of mind and firmness of purpose that you have al- ready shown. You'lI he seniors by and hy. This was the greeting that we as freshmen got on the first day of school in 1946. With such a large building and such a small class. it seemed almost impossible that we would ever become seniors. Soon we will be leaving the school with only pleasant memories of YHS. But before we leave. we wottld like to remind you--lest you forget-of some of the accomplishments ofthe class of 1950. Our freshman year was under the capable leadership of Pat McBarron as president. We were the most worthy class in high schoolsaccording to the janitors-for we were the only class to clean up properly after ottr two parties. I With the coming of our sophomore year we were joined by Mrs. Irene Billington. our advisor. and many new mem- bers from Franklin and Washington ,lunior Highs. Now we could hold our own. We promptly elected the following lead- ers for our IOL year: Bill Pearl. president: Pete Trusley. vice-president: Darlene Dexter. secretary: Dick Allen. treasurer: Nancy Hollinsworth, historian: Guy Shinn. ASB representative: Menton Sveen. Boys League representative: Dolores Ifaton. Cirls League representative: Al Simmons. boys' athletic manager: and Marion Dietz. girls' athletic manager. We had just got estahlished and learned the importance of good grades when we were honored with new l0II class officers. They were: president. .lim Murphy: vice-president. Doreen Brackett: secretary. Kathryn llaguez treasurer. Barbara Graham: historian. Ann Markham: ASB representative. Guy Shinn: Boys League representative. BilbRobhins: Girls League representative. ,Io Ann Keeney: hoys' athletic manage1'. Chuck Shanahan: girls' athletic manager. Betty Armstrong. During our IOH year we gave a spring party. Chuck Shanahan and Ann Markham were co-chairmen. The gym ceil- ing was completely lowered with crepe paper. and beach umbrellas and halloons made it the scene of a garden. The deco- rations, with Doris Huntzinger and Ceralyn Kugler in charge. were said to he as beautiful any ever seen in high school. Leading our Ill, class were: Roger Pugmire, president: Paul Peterson. vice president: .lo Etta Arnt. secretary: Marita lfmmons. treasurer: ,Ioanne Sanford. historian: Boll Anderson. ASB representative: Bob Letnke. Boys League representative: Doris Iluntzinger. S x 2 i THE SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Kflontinued from page 151 We started the year off with a bang by having a halloween hard times party. It was under the direction of Ann Markham and Jack Brune. The dimly lighted room was deco rated with pumpkins and hop poles, under the chairmanship of Lee Ann Lindeman. During this semester we also gave our class play, 'iLife With Father . Miss Bucknam was in charge of the finan- cial part. She was aided by Bill Gekler, Leon Buzitis, Kathryn Hague, and Geralyn Kugler. Some of the members of our class displayed their talent by acting in the play. They were: Bill Carter, Joanne Curtis, and Trina Ogle. We were soon grieved to learn that Mrs. Billington would be leaving us to retire. The class presented her with a purse as a token of appreciation for the splendid assistance that she had given us. Mr. Sebastian became our new class advisor, and he had as his assistants the new elected officers who were: Presi- dent, Roger Pugmireg vice-president, Chuck Shanahang secretary, Trina Ogle, treasurer, Jim Whartong historian, Joanne Sanford, ASB representative, Bob Anderson, Boys League representative, Derril Meyerg Girls League representative, Doreen Brackettg boys' athletic manager, Bill Pearlg and girls' athletic manager, Marilyn Kukay. The biggest junior event finally arrived-THE JUNIOR-SENIOR RECEPTION. Jane Deaver and Darlene Dexter were in charge. Marlene Beem was in charge of decorations. The theme was a Chinese Fantasy and the programs were in the form of Chinese fans. Honor once again came to the junior class when Louana Sipe was elected Hi-Y Queen of Hearts. We received the honor and she received the kisses. Doreen Brackett was another sweetheart, but of the DeMolays. We were brought additional honors when Pat Saling won the DAR American History contest and Bob Anderson was chosen Most Worthy J union Soon we were to lose the upper classmen for the 1949 graduation was here. The juniors under the leadership of Roger Pugmire and Geralyn Kugler took on the decorations for Baccalaureate and Graduation, and Roger and Bill Gekler were given the honor of leading the graduating class down the stairs. At last--WE WERE THE MIGHTY SENIORS! and the time had come for the greatest honors. We were led by Guy Shinn, president: Dolores Eaton, vice-presidentg Ann Markham, secretary: .lane Deaver, treasurer, Geralyn Kugler, historiang Derril Meyer, Boys League representativeg Darlene Dexter, Girls League representativeg Chuck Shanahan, boys' athletic managerg and Betty Armstrong, girls' athletic manager. Football season found lovely Dolores Eaton as homecoming Queen, with Don Dexter reigning as King. Soon after, the seniors found the funny side of life by sponsoring the Nutcracker Sweep. To fit the pattern Ro- berta Worley and Mel Lewis were put in charge. Any relation to the bedposts, faces, or hands used for decorations to any person living or dead is purely coincidental. The month of sweethearts rolled around once more, and we were again honored when Betty Jane Kinnaman took the place of Louana as Hi Y Queen of Hearts and Nancy Hollinsworth became DeMolay Sweetheart. We found we had something on the ball when Chuck Shanahan, Derril Meyer, and Dick Thomas placed on the All Star basketball team. Dick Thomas proved himself again when he placed in the state track meet doing the high jump and Ed Parish showed outstanding pole vaulting ability. Marilyn Kukay was also very handy with the tennis racket and won many honors. But athletics weren't our only glory for Gloria Ottaiano was chosen Concert Mistress for the Ellensburg Music Festival. Bill Carter and Referd Gorman brought us honors by winning first in the state debate contest. Jane Deaver dis- played her masterpieces and brought back several Gold Keys in the art field. Jimmy Robinson made our class known by directing his outstanding band for many functions. At last spring had come. It was proved to us when Gwen Gee was elected Apple Blossom princess to represent our schoo'l at Wenatchee and Barbara Graham and Jack Brune were elected King and Queen of the May Dance. Mary Fran Jeffers and Barbara Graham were in charge of the dance. On the day our annuals were distributed, we could see the hard work that Trina Ogle and Bill Gekler had put into them. To top everything we established records scholastically. Bob Anderson, Kelly Shaw, and Trina Ogle placed among the top students of the nation in the National Honor Society Scholarship contest. Another scholastic record was made when our class presented four Valedictorians, who were Bob Anderson, Mary Fran Jeffers, Geralyn Kugler, and Kelly Shaw. with Trina Ogle as salutatorian. Now the time has come for us to walk down those steps to graduation leaving the honors to be bestowed on thc members of other classes. And-although we may leave you with Freshmen, Freshmen, don't you cry, you'll be seniors by and by. -don't cry! for you have a long joyful high school ahead of you, while all we shall have are the happy memo- ries behind us and envy of you who do not have to leave so soon. 121 P Eff A fiiwffgtg , DW , 23.23 X- 59941 .P 14 TV wrffxxlqq ., W , ffxgb' FR ' f ff' if M W iff?
