The members of the 1947 class have faced some very discouraging conditions during the past few years. To their credit these young people have met these situations bravely and intelligently. They are now well started on the road to useful citizenship. They carry with them our firm belief in continued suc- cess. A. C. DAVIS, Superintendent After 41 years of service to Yakima High School, seven of which he spent as principal, A. C. Davis is retiring from active duty, looking forward to spending his future years enjoying life. With sincere appreciation for what he has done toward making our school a better school, and remember- ing the counsel he has given us individually, we wish him happiness and contentment in his retirement, and bid him goodbye. THE CLASS OF 1947 4 Congratulations to the graduating seniors and good luck to the underclass- men. We all have memories of many happy hours spent together doing worth while things for our school. To some, this year has brought disappointmentg to others, very deep satisfaction in having done one's best. May the joy of accom- plishment come to each of you and spur you on to greater effort so that all of you will have the rich rewards which come from conscientious preparation, sincere endeavor, hearty cooperation and loyal service. CLARENCE ZIMMERMAN, Principal Commencement, nineteen forty-seven, marks the end of Mr. Zimmer- man's service to our school. The friendly help and guidance he has given so freely have earned him the undying gratitude of this class and of those before us. Our best wishes for continued success go with him to his next position. Tina CLASS ol-' 1947 5 N r s t ANNA WHITNEY Miss Anna Whitney served as a most efficient teacher of young people and as a sympathetic counselor of girls and boys in the Yakima High School from 1908 until her withdrawal in 1946. During this entire period, our school has been her first consideration. Her devotion to duty has been a wonderf ul inspiration to her students and to other teachers. As the years pass the name of Anna Whitney will be remembered by her acquaintances as belonging to one of their best friends who was con- stantly eager to assist in their growth and progress. A. C. '47 CLASS HISTORY After being initiated into the various intricacies of high school life, the class of 1911-7 imme- diately set about making plans for the coming social season. Pat Hogan and Gerald Vllilson were elected the presidents for the year. They with the other class leaders formulated ambitious plans for the sophomore activities. The first was an afternoon party which almost proved us anti-social because of the few people at- tending. The second party was more of a success but left us in an embarrassing position, the treas- ury was stone broke. Somewhat disheartened by the financial situation but otherwise sitting on top of the world, we disbanded for the year. To be in the 'unior ear we elected Ann Cavin to the rost of rresident and started out ener- . g 3 V . . , l l . . getically to redeem ourselves on the financial score. llhe class party was held early in february and the outcome was most gratifying. Bob Peterson, second semester president, was faced with the monumental task of supervising work for the junior-senior reception. With Mr. Zaepfelis able assistance the class did a very credit- able job of presenting this affair, using a French motif. lt was one of the most elaborate dances that has been presented at Y. ll. S. for many years. Under Miss Murle Birkfs astute direction we gave our junior play, g'You Canit Take It With Youf' Thus we ended another successful year. With our carefully hoarded money we bought a record player with six loud speakers for the cafeteria, our bequest to our dear alma mater. Dolores Bode and Stephen Bunch headed the Lolomi, while Ann Cavin and Nancy Sinclair served as editors for the Wigwam. The last days of school held the usual busy flurry. We found Stephen Bunch leading the class as valedictorian with a straight Aw average. Don Yates and Bill Yergen tied for honors as salutatorian. With the senior sneak at Eschbach park, the senior dinner, junior-senior reception, bacca- laureate, and graduation, the class of 1947s high school days were ended. Yakima High may well be proud of its tennis team this year. As this is written, the Pirate net squad proved itself invincible by downing all opponents. By May 1 they had played tand wonl seven of ten scheduled matches, defeating Ellensburg, Wapato. and Toppenish once each, and Selah and Highland twice apiece. This gave them an enviable average and made their chances of winning the Valley Tournament look very bright indeed. Much of the success of the team could be directly attributed to the expert guidance of Mr. Rowley, coach for the season. Under his able direction the team changed from a squad of early sea- son hopefuls to a team that commanded the respect of all the valley schools. NORMA SMITH 58 TENNIS Hdentifications on Page 582 TRACK To open the '47 season, Captain Alan Tinsley led his track squad to a 58 point victory in the 20th annual invitational track and field meet. At the next meet, the Pirates encountered four- way competition at Richland, where they took top honors with 8315 points. Chalking up their third straight win at the Ellensburg invitational meet, the Pirates amassed a total point score of 69. Yakima's old rival, Walla Walla, accepted a 68-54 defeat from the Buc cinder squad on May 2, the feature event of which was a nip and tuck quarter mile between Yakimais Pennell and Wa- Hiis Baxter, with Pennell the victor. At a night meet under lights in Toppenish, the Pirates record- ed 51 points for their fifth straight win. With three meets remaining to complete the yearis schedule, the Pirate cindermen have long since been conceded the valley championship. ALAN T1Ns1.l5Y First row: Duane Anderson, manager, Tom Bates.
