The slogan f'Defense is said to refer to The American Way of Life. Let us not forget that along with freedom of speech, press, and religion we cherish the privilege of choosing our own vocations and avocations. This means the continuation in our education of mathematics, the sciences, commercial and manual subjects to help us earn a comfortable living, and literature,-Yin our own and foreign languages, history, music, and art to enable us to enjoy a great variety of interests in our leisure hours, along or with others, in health or in sick- ness, at home or abroad, in youth or in maturity. So may we continue the pursuit of happiness. MABEL A. SQUIRE, Girls' Adviser. It has been the policy of the Yakima public schools in the past to give as much vocational and personality guidance as possible. This guidance is given through many mediums, such as the classrooms, explanatory courses, personal interviews and periodic conferences. Last fall the Boys' and Girls' leagues sponsored a two-day conference to discuss vocational problems. Dr. Edward L. Clark, president of Multnomah college of Portland, Oregon, was the principal speaker and counsellor. Again this year the vocational day was sponsored by the Boys' and Girls' leagues. Many group meetings were held where students were able to hear and talk with speakers from their chosen profession. It was an inspirational program. The advisers have, through the use of the Kuder Preference Record test, conducted many interviews with the graduating seniors for the past two years. Une might say that it is the last help given by the advisers to the seniors, in a vocational and educational way, before graduation. G. L. OLIVER, Boys' Adviser. ' Mr. Boucher, vice principal, with stenographers, Iva Howson and lmogene Morrison Seven

Dr. Wight To the Members of the 1942 Graduating Class: Representing your teachers, we genuinely regret that you are leaving our high school at this time to enter a world torn with discord and strife. We have confidence, however, in your ability to cope with situations, surmount clitli- culties, and attain the success to which you are entitled. Best wishesl A. C. DAXVIS, Superintendent. SCHOOL PATRIOTISM The war has focused attention on the fact that thousands of highly skilled and technically trained men and women are necessary if we expect to win the war. Nlany young men are being given military deferment so that they mav finish their college courses. Thousands of men and women are being given tecli- nical training in government schools at government expense. Boys who have a good background of mathematics and science are eagerly being sought by all branches of the service. These and many other facts should clearly indicate to all our students that it is their patriotic duty to prepare themselves for service to our country by doing their school work to the best of their ability. CLARENCE Z1Mml2R1wiAN.
