'51 A.. 3, P W' 1 I ofzewofzd Like the busy Hornets, students of Yadkinville High School have created a veritable Hornets' Nest of activities around the campus again this year. It has been the aim of the staff in preparing this book to record these activities of the Hornets 'so that the reader may see the members of the student body as they are --- industrious, interest- ing, intelligent, willing to work or play as a team, ready to defend with a vicious sting any who might attack them. e icafion Dedicating our Annual took a lot of thought and discussion because so many people have done so much to help us. We decided that to honor only one or two individuals would be inappropriate. It would have been very hard to make the choice. We chose an organization that includes all of these wonderful persons to whom we are very much indebted-the Parent-Teachers Association of Yadkinville 'High School. We know that often the dedication page in the Annual is overlooked, but it seemed necessary to express ourselves in some way with fullest sincerity for the contributions made. This rather modest organization, usually working behind the scenes, was almost entirely responsible for purchasing our activity bus. This same group has sponsored recreation programs for us and has given much-needed financial aid in school projects, from improving the grounds to buying softballs. We only hope that future students at our school will be fortunate enough to have such an active group of persons who perform so efficiently. t , ,Wg , 5 1 fx A X A 2 W ' vs w i , ' A- l .r E nnual M66 Editor-in-Chief, Willie Grey Smith, Associate Editor, Betty Jo Hutclfiensg Business Manager, Lewis Brumfieldg Advertising Manager, Harce Dean Corneliusg Circulation Manager, Betty Ann Kigerg Sports Editors, Sue Ratledge and Joe Caslwion, Art Editors, Betty Ratledge and Bonnie Williams, Typists, Lydia Hall and Pattie Cranfillg Advisors, Mrs. Leo Wagoner and Miss Mary Harding. a Q C S , G c f ' 'Aft-Cx Q S OC Y 10 t S P B r , r I a rn n o D i QUIETEST Dorothy Sreelman Fred Royal upefzlafives PRETTIEST Loretta Reavis BEST LOOKIN G Darold Weaflnerman -.2 ri . 74' i. 5 'PPI' .fl ..1. .5 f, 5. 1 . .413 'if 4 'u 6 MOST DEPENDABLE Lewis Brumfield Barbara Prim MOST STUDIOUS NEATEST Billy Casstevens Sue Rafledge Betty Jo Hutchens Allen Sneed gupefzlafives MOST ATHLETIC MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Robert Trivette Willie Grey Smith Margaret Cheek Lawrence Nance 1 A 5 T We MOST TALENTED MOST POPULAR Gene Wagoner Betty Ann Kiger Mary Sue Sheek Joe Cushion gupefzlafives FRIENDLIEST MOST CO-OPERATIVE Patsy Redding Bobby Casstevens Fred Royal Mary Nell Hutchens MOST MISCHIEVOUS BEST PERSONALITY Joe Cushion Anne Speer Betty Rutledge Harce Dean Cornelius BEST ALL AROUND CUTEST Billy Wyatt Nellie Todd WITTIEST Harrie Branon Lloyd Willard Lydia Hall Richard Driver Q MOST COURTEOUS Bonnie Williams Lawrence Nance I Z ,I I X FC' S Q I K X ' sig N Q ix Sq 5 X S' ' aff wif? Tho the road was narrow and long, And our hardships more than a few, Our parents gave us hope to carry on And the teachers, our strength to renew. Twelve long years we've waited For this day of honor and success, Forgetting all misfortunes, Remembering our days of happiness. Glass Hisfofuj Forty-seven seniors were graduated from Yadkinville High School on May 31, 1952. This, our class, was the largest ever to graduate here, but we had our meager beginning, too. Ten students from Forbush Grammar School brought the total number of freshmen to seventy in 1948. Mr. B. S. Linville and Miss Arlene Williams had the somewhat dubious distinction of being our homeroom teachers. Scared and green, all seventy of us chose Betty Ann Anderson and Lewis Brumfield as our presidents. Besides our studies and other activities, we had lots of fun following the boys' basketball team which captured the Yadkin Valley Tourna- ment. We picnicked at Reynolds Park in Winston-Salem. Ignorance was bliss because we enjoyed everything that year. By the end of the year we were beginning to adapt ourselves to this new mode of life, but by that time we were sophomores. Miss Alice Dixon and Miss Mary Harding, as our homeroom teachers, were forced to listen to our silly giggles all year. This period of our high school history will forever be lost in oblivion, except for the fact that our boys' team won the Journal-Sentinel Tournament. We lost about one-third of our class these two years to jobs, marriages, and other schools. In 1950, we emerged as jolly juniors. Were we busy that year! Our homeroom teachers were Mrs. Claude Davis and Miss Ethel Marie Hall, who has since become Mrs. Richard Kelly. Class presidents that year were Pattie Cranfill and Betty .lo Hutchens. Football was reinstated here for the first time in fifteen years. Sue Ratledge represented us in the Piedmont Bowl Beauty Contest. Immediately after school started, we began working for and arguing about the Junior-Senior Banquet. A new precedent was set by having the banquet at home in our brand-new gymnasium and high school building. In February, several members of the United States History Class took a memorable jaunt to Williamsburg, Virginia. Handle With Care was our junior play. With Willie Grey Smith as chief, junior marshals were Sue Ratledge, Bonnie Williams, Betty Ann Kiger, Lois Wooten, and Lewis Brumfield. Of course, we picked daisies and cried when the Seniors of '51 left. Beginning school in 1951 presented a new and pleasant change, since we were seniors. Miss Mary Harding and Mrs. Leo Wagoner were our sponsors. Lewis Brumfield was elected president of the class, Betty Jo Hutchens, vice president, Anne Speer, secretary, Geraldine Vestal, treasurer, and Willie Grey Smith, reporter. Right after school started, we received our rings, soon after eiecting Willie Grey Smith as the editor of our annual. Patsy Redding was our P' , -L' 1 . . . iedmont Bowl representative. Things started rolling right in the spring of 1952 when the juniors gave us a lovely banquet Then events began ilin u , , , ' P 9 P in rapid succession-the play, an unforgettable trip to Washington, class night and a picnic for the juniors. Graduation on May 31 was almost an anticlimax to this exciting whirl of ha e ' . W h our own way. Now who was in that cIass? Mr. Buchanan found the I95I-'52 annual and turned to the Senior division. The first picture in the class was that of Barbara Adams. I passed Barbara and Tommy Williams Saturday afternoon coming back from Winston-Salem. They live up here and Tommy works in Winston. I noticed in the paper that Betty Ann Anderson has her driver's license. Hattie Branon and her husband, Santford Swaim, are living at Harmony Heights. Martha Branon was a secretary in New York the last time I heard from her. Marie Brown is working for Bilt- more Dairy now, I remember she used to sell ice cream for them. I had a card from Lewis Brumfield postmarked Paris saying, 'I -am having a fine time.' I filled out an application for Joe Cashion to coach at Yadkinville. Billy Cas- stevens sent me two complimentary tickets to his new production at the Barter Theater, 'Here Is the Wind.' Bobby Casstevens, who is a doctor in Elkin, came by to see if I wanted to go with him. Margaret Cheek is six times 'All American,' with Hanes Hosiery. I saw the former Georgia Church and three of her children in town Saturday afternoon. Last week I talked with Lessie Church Blevins, who is now a housewife in town. I noticed that Harce Dean Cornelius is the biggest taxpayer in the county. He must be doing well on his farm. Pattie Cranfill is now living in San Diego with her husband, Captain Marshall Haire. I buy groceries from Richard Driver in his Super Market. In the executive department of Chatham Blanketeers, I found Wilma Gentry doing her daily work. Lydia Hall, who has now settled in a small bungalow in the mountains, is happily married to Gene Garland. When I flew to Washington the other day, Peggy Hoots was the hostess on the plane. Patty Howell Hutchens and Paul have a nice home iust below town. I heard that Congressman Stuffed-Shirt hired Betty Jo Hutchens as his secretary. Billy Cave won the Indianapolis race and Mary Nell Hutchens was seen kissing the winner. I found out that Reta Johnson is a nurse at the Baptist Hospital. I passed by a very prosperous-looking peanut farm in Center yesterday. It belonged to Leroy and Betty Ann Kiger Weather- man. Last summer when I was at the beach, I saw Nancy Carol Long and Miles Gray Gentry with their red-haired kids. Lawrence and Geraldine Vestal Nance have many acres and many children up in the country. They were married shortly after they both graduated from high school. Barbara Prim Trivette is still in jail since she married Byrd a few months ago. I read about Betty Ratledge being a famous hair designer on Fifth Avenue. The former Sue Ratledge is now living in Raleigh where her husband, Robert Gordon, is still connected with State College. After following Loretta Reavis through many beauty contests, I heard a report the other day that said she has now settled down to a quiet life with her husband. Patsy Redding is pursuing her art career in Raleigh. It is rumored that she is on her way to success. I under- stand that Fred Royal is a war hero in the Far East. At the recent meeting of the N. C. E. A., we elected Mary Sue Sheek as 'Teacher of the Year.' Willie Grey Smith is on the staff at the Lula Conrad Hoots Memorial as head nurse. While touring a nearby bakery, I talked with Allen Sneed, who makes buns. Time Magazine carried a story about Anne Speer and her missionary work in China. Dorothy Steelman told me that she had decided to remain at W. C. to be a secretary to the Dean. Nellie Todd is a receptionist for one of the prominent doctors in Winston-Salem. She dropped by for a visit with me not long ago. When I went through Statesville recently, I stopped to see my dentist, Dr. Eugene Wagoner. Velma Wagoner was at P.T.A. last week. She has a little girl in the third grade. Darold Weatherman drives his new '62 Ford to play ball with Hanes Hosiery. Hilda White told me recently that she and her family had moved into their new house near Yadkinville. She is busy caring for her house, husband, and children. I hear that Lloyd Willard was given a safe driver's badge for driving for the Greyhound Bus Company. Bonnie Williams is associate editor of a leading fashion magazine for women. Lois Wooten is now a model, whose picture is frequently seen in advertisements. Billy Wyatt is a well-known mechanic in Detroit. Just an average class, Mr. Buchanan thought. They turned out fine. Bridgewater, head coach, came to us from Leaksville High School, where he coached for the past three years. Coach Bridgewater, a native of Asheville, North Carolina, is a graduate of Lee H. Edwards High School. While in high school, he participated and was awarded letters in football, boxing, and baseball. He wasamember of the Mythical State Championship Football Team in l94l . On his return from service he enrolled at High Point College, where he played three years of varsity football. He received his B.S. Degree in Physical Education from High Point College and his Masters Degree from the University of North Carolina. JohnWesley Mathis, assistant coach, is a native of Jonesville, North Carolina. Before graduating at Jones- ville High, he played football, basketball, and baseball. While enrolled at Appalachian State Teachers College he played football and basketball. He received a B.S. Degree there during the past summer qifzlsl gasfzefluall Basketball has reigned as king of the sports at Yadkinville High School for another year. Fine play has marked the '5l-'52 season as being among the best. As in the past, the teams have shown spirit of sportsmanship in every game of the season. Mr. Bill B. Bridgewater came to this school to be head coach this year. Mr. Bridgewater attended High Point College and received his masters degree at the University of North Carolina. Boxing, baseball, and college football were some of the sports in which he participated. He was an aerial gunner during the war and was a prisoner in Germany for thirteen months. Graduation set the girls back somewhat on the basketball court this year, but all in all the season has been usuccessful one. ln November approximately forty girls put in their bid for a uniform. Competition was there- fore extremely keen, but through much effort these girls usually drew the starting positions: fonwardsg Libby Smith, Janet Haynes, Ouida Brown, Peggy Howell, and Betty Rutledge. The guards who played most regularly were Margaret Cheek, Sue Rutledge, Willie Grey Smith, Hattie Branon, and Jean Hutchins. I An important source of strength came from the number of reserves that were capable of playing in any game. Betty Rutledge, Frances Harding, Adelaide Hinshaw, Marlene Sprinkle, Georgia Ann'Cashion, and Bonnie Dinkins showed up well in several games. The outstanding Forwards of the year were Haynes, Smith and Brown. These girls took care of the scoring whileWillie Grey Smith, Margaret Cheek, Sue Rutledge, Hattie Branon, and Jean Hutchins sparked the defensive play. Both basketball teams at this school are indebted to the cheerleaders and to the cheering section for the support that they have given throughout the entire season. Every game was not won, nor was the going always smooth and easyp but whatever happened, the cheering section was ready to give their support to the teams. ln addition to the twenty scheduled games that they played, the girls were outstanding in two tournaments. The Yudkin Valley Conference tournament saw the girls go into the semi-finals. They defeated Beulah 37 to I7, Mt. View 23 to l8, and East Bend 23 to 20. After being seeded number six, the Yadkinville girls traveled all the way to the finals in the Yudkin County Tournament. The team bowed out to Boonville in the final game. In reaching the finals, they defeated Court- ney 23 to l8, and Janesville 34 to 32. RECORD FOR '5l -' Janet Haynes Ouida Brown Forward-Junior Forward-Soph. Bobby Collins at first, Bobby Holcomb at second, Darold Weather- man as short stop, and Thurmond Phillips at third made a very strong infield. ln left field we had a veteran of four years varsity baseball, Harce Dean Cornelius, in center field, Bobby Dinkins, and right field position, either Johnny Reece, Robert Shore, or Delano Dinkins. The Hornets lost only three men to graduation this year. They are Darold Weatherman, short stop, Byrd Trivette, pitcher, and Harce Dean Cornelius, left fielder.
