Yes, the days of this last year, That we'll spend at Yadkinville High. We'll remember our dear teachers, And Mr. Buchanan, our principal too, Our English and our History books, And our colors, White and Blue. No one will ever, ever know, The feelings in our heart, When it is time to say goodby, And from our friends depart. It's really very hard to say, Goodbye to classmates dear. But we shall surely meet someday, To recall our mem'ries here, At Yadkinville High. Herbert Willard COLORS: Blue and White FLOWER: Carnation MOTTO: Education is a ladder, at the top is success. Gail Whitaker . . . . .Roy Hoots Jessie Williams Richard Russel Glass Histofn, In 1946, the dignified seniors of today were entering high school as green freshmen. Since there was such a large class it was essential that we be di- vided into two sections. Miss Arlene Williams sponsored the girls, while Mr. B. S. Linville took control of the boys. The fact that several freshman girls made the basketball team, proves that the classwas unusual from the beginning. The jump into high school was a big one and some took marriage as the only Way out. After the first semester we had outgrown some of the shyness which we brought with us into the high school. In our sophomore year we had the pleasure of initiating the freshmen. They underwent the same experiences we had had the previous year. We were again divided. Miss Mary Harding and MissAlice Dixon were faced with the problem. Asjuniors we had a very eventful year. In January the United StatesHistory classes took a sightseeing trip to historical Williamsburg, Virginia. On our re- turn, six girls from our class were taken into the Beta Club. We were kept busy raising money for the annual Junior-Senior Banquet which was held at the Elkin Y . The Junior play The Meddlesome Maid was a great success. Our home- room teacher was Mrs. Elva Hoots. The big project for our Senior year was publishing our annual, The Yad- kinian. Our sponsors were Miss Mary Harding and Mr. R. P. Buchanan. To the Juniors we express our sincere thanks for the exquisite banquet which they .gave us. In the spring, along with spring fever, came that long awaited trip to Wash- ington, D. C. Although some of us had seen the city before, it was still an ad- venture never to be forgotten. Asa grand finale of our senior year came Class Night, Senior Play, and that all-important Graduation Day. Our dreams are about to come true. We can look back and see our mistakes and understand what a hard job the teachers have had these last four years, but perhaps their efforts will bring forth more fruit in the future than they now imagine. 5 55? .1 13 uh S W K cg , 7' S :eff S or 17 QE ,., x ' up 7 ri Si I A 2? 9 .Si i'Q..g-if ,M Q K X a ffl 0 WX' XQS - QE ? To our home room teacher, Miss Mary Harding, we bequeath our very kindest regards and our sincere gratitude for her unfailing kindness and aid. To the juniors we give our dignity, duties, and meritsg our sense of humor, our sense of honor, and our common sense we leave to the sophomores, our love for our Alma Mater and our ambitions and every good thought we ever had, we leave to the freshmen. Although the girls have never quite seemed to hit the stride they have been capable of achiev- ing all year long, they gave Yadkinville and Yadkin County basketball fans many a lively moment during the recently completed campaign. At times the team really looked great. At other times the girls had trouble getting started. With the completion of the new gymnasium, the sport of basketball has. had the greatest in- terest ever at the school. When Coach Malcolm Brown soundedthe first call for team candidates at the start of the season, forty girls responded. Many of these faces were new ones at Yadkin- ville. Among the new girls were Libby Smith and Ouida Brown of Forbush, and Gay Miller of South Fork in Forsyth County. Competition for every position on the team was spirited during the entire season, but the fol- lowing seven girls by great effort were able to muscle into the starting positions and held them during the year: Forwards--Peggy Hudspeth, Emma Lou Carter, Gail Whitaker, Janet Haynes, Guards--Margaret Anne Myers, Sue Ratledge, and Margaret Cheek. One of the strongest factors of the team this year was its fine reserve strength. There was hardly a night when one or more of the substitutes couldnft have played the entire game without much difference being noticed. Other members of the squad were: Forwards--Bonnie Williams, Willie Grey Smith, Betty Ratledge, Patty Cranfill, Libby Smith, and Ouida BrowngGuards--Rosemary Taylor,Hattie Bra- non, Nan Linville, and Gay Miller. It was usually conceded that the defense was stronger than the offense, but the four girls who started most of the games left little to be desired in forwards when they were clicking. Margaret Anne Myers was elected captain, and Gail Whitaker co-captain, of the team. Emma Lou Carter and Peggy Hud speth paced the scoring attack most of the season, while Margaret Cheek shone in the defensive play. The 1951 Yadkinville basketball team refused to believe those who said that the team would be woefully weak after the loss of the five regulars from the Journal-Sentinel championship team of 1950. Instead of believing all of those sob stories, the scrappy little band of players that made up the 1951 team went out and posted the second best record in Yadkin County, and one of the best records in the entire Northwest. The biggest handicaps to the team at the start of the season were inexperience and lack of size. Long hours of hard work under the able tutelage of Coach Malcolm Brown erased the inexperience angle. Plenty of fight and a bunch of sharpshooters who were considered one of the best shooting teams in the county took care of the problems caused by the lack of size. The average height of the team was five feet, ten inches. There were only two seniors on the team, Aaron Linville and Tommy Williams. Harce Dean Cornelius, Robert Trivette, and Darold Weatherman will be back for one more year of basketball, and the following boys are sophomores: Bobby Holcomb, Bobby and Delano Dinkins, Floyd Wilmouth, and Robert Shore. Kent Cranfill, a freshman, made up the eleventh man on the team. The team was strenthened considerably by the addition of Floyd Wilmouth, a transfer student from West Yadkin. The big burden of the offense was borne by sharpshooting Darold Weatherman and Bobby Holcomb. The team employed a man-to-man defense, and mixed up a fast breaking offense with their series of plays employing set shots. Some outstanding defensive work was done by Harce Dean Cornelius, Tommy Williams, Bobby and Delano Dinkins, and Floyd Wilmouth. The team should be considerably bigger physically next year. 4 Sh f-x gaslzeflmu goals Bobby Holcomb Darold Weatherman Tommy Williams Floyd Wilmouth Aaron Linville Bobby Dinkins Delano Dinkins Harce Dean Cornelius Robert Shore Kent Cranfill Ya dkinville Ya dkinville Ya dkinville Yadkinville Ya dkinville Yadkinville Yadkinville Yadkinville Yadkinville Flat Rock Boonville West Yadkin Mt. This year Yadkinville added something new to the athletic program. Football is back aiter a long rest. The last game was played almost twenty years ago when Mr. Rufus Crater was princi- pal of the school. The twenty-five boys outfitted with football uniforms started this sport using the T formation. Practice was begun on August 20th and the team made much improvement as the days went by. The weak places in the team were soon strengthened by replacements found by Coach Malcolm Brown. This year only two games were won out of the nine that were scheduled. Although the team is comparatively small in size, the big problem this season was the lack of experience on the part of the players. The team will lose only three players who are seniors: Hugh West, captain, who played right tackle, Hugh Weatherman, left tackle, and Aaron Linville, a plunging right half back. ' During the season the team scored forty-five points, thirty-one of which were scored by a junior, O' Dean Hemric, who played full back. The team's line-up is as follows: Floyd Wilmouth, end, Hugh Weatherman, tackle, Jerry Sneed, guard, Joe Cashion, center, George Bray, guard, Hugh West, tackle, Robert Trivette, end, Bobby Holcomb, quarter back, O' Dean Hemric, full back, Aaron Linville, half back, Harce Dean Cornelius, half back. Mr. Malcolm Brown, the coach, is a graduate of CarsonNewman College. This is his second year at Yadkinville.
