HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF I956 The history of the class of i956 is a dramatic one. It began in the year of i952 as we were entering Yadkin High School as Freshmen. Being a Freshman was very exciting to us because now we entered into our first year of high school with twenty-two members strong, with a determination to do great things. We won second place in the Annual Popularity Contest with Shelby Jean Dobson as our contestant. ln our Sophomore year we were getting use to the idea of being high school students, and were ready to get down to work. But as it came to pass, many, with one consent began to make excuses. The first said, I am poor in health, therefore, lcannot graduate. Another said, lam dull and cannot learn, I pray thee have me excused. A third said, I must need toil at home, therefore I cannot graduate. And still another said, I am going to be married and therefore I need not graduate. So thus did this class decrease in number until the whole number at the end of the second year was thirteen. But that did not stop us because we were glad of the fact that we won the Popularity Contest with yours truly, Georgia Juanita Stimpson as contestant. We were very proud of ourselves because we made history. We were the first class to raise 5527.70 for the whole ten years the Popularity Contest had been going on. Entering into our Junior year was very exciting because of the thoughts of being able to give a Junior-Senior Prom. Every one said our prom was the most fascinating prom that had ever been held at Yadkin High School. Everyone really enioyecl this event. Entering into the Popu- larity Contest for the third year, we won third place with Edith Tucker as our contestant. And lo, the total number in the class at the end of the third year was twelve. Now this, the fourth year in the history of this great and wonderful class of l956, has been one of much hard labor and little resting by the way side, for preparations have been in the mak- ing for us to take our final departure from this land. Our little band still numbers twelve. During our Senior year we were invited to attend A. 8. T. College's Annual High School Senior Day in Greensboro, North Carolina. We accepted the invitation with gratitude, and had a wonderful time. With Laura Ruth Armstrong as our contestant in the Popularity Contest for the Senior Class, we won third place and took it with a smile. But the most exciting thing to have happened to us during our four years of high school, was the privilege of being able to publ is h the first yearbook at Yadkin High School, namely: THE EAGLE. We feel proud of ourselves for having the wonderful opportunity of publishing the first yearbook of this school, and we truly hope the idea will be a success throughout the years to come. Many, many thanks to the faculty and friends who helped us. So it has come to pass that of the twenty-two that entered this land in the year of l952, only twelve will depart, for verily, verily, l say unto you that broad is the gate, and wide is the way that leadeth to high school, and many there be that enter. But straight is the gate, and narrow is the way that leadeth to graduation, and few there be that find it. Four years hath the senior class of i956 soiourned in the land and gathered in large portions the fruits from the Tree of Knowledge. But it is written in the day when ye shall have eaten of all these fruits, ye shall surely be driven from the land. Now, lsay unto you we must depart thence to go each a separate way to lands we know not of, to do we know not what. But let us not be weary in well doing for in due season we shall reap if we faint not. GEORGIA JUANITA SIMPSON Historian
