CLASS HISTORY ln the fall of 1949 our class entered Central High School as freshmen. The class organized in our Sophomore year when we elected officers. Philip Gegner, president, John McCaIlister, vice president. Peg Neeld took notes at our few meetings, and Shirley Matson guarded the money. This year we held two dances, a talent show, and helped with the candy sales. The advisors were Miss Williams and Mr. Patterson. The leaders for our iunior year were John McCalIister, president, Philip Gegner, vice president. Peg Neeld again very ably kept the records, and Shirley Hinshaw handled the funds. To finance the Junior-Senior Prom we sponsored a dance and were in charge of the refreshments at the football and basketball games. After months of impatient waiting our class rings arrived. Mr. Sultzbach directed our class play, Father of the Bride, which was pre- sented two evenings. School work was abandoned as we worked on the Junior-Senior Prom and banquet. The theme was Under the Sea. This year our advisors were Miss Williams and Mr. Seilhamer. Finally the long awaited year arrived. Somehow we had become Seniors! We elected Dave Luttrell, president, Maurice Carroll, vice president, Shirley Matson, secretary, and Carol Brown, treasurer. Our very able advisors were Mrs. Balmer and Mr. Marshall. With much success, we pesented our senior class play, Annie Get Your Gun. During the second semester we ordered name cards and commencement invita- tions. ln May we were the guests of the iuniors at the Junior-Senior Prom. At last the great day arrived-Graduation Day! Dale Funk, first string fullback, tore ligaments in his knee in our game with Oakwood and was out for the rest of the season, Marc McCallister broke his collarbone in the Troy game, Dick Jordan broke his ankle, Sam Clark, first team end, missed one game because of a penicillin rash. There were several other minor iniuries that hurt the team's chances during the season. Central's Varsity was the strongest team in recent years. The Bucs again tied for third in the M. V. L. race. Led by Ted Detty, who was the leading M. V. L. scorer for the second straight year, the Bucs showed a strong offense and a scrappy defense. Coach Ankney loses thirteen seniors this year. For the second consecutive year Kaylor led his team to a Miami Valley League Championship. This makes Kaylor's 'fourth championship in five years. The Battling Bucs, and we do mean battling, finished the season with 15-4 record, climaxed by an exciting victory over a tall Springfield Public quintet, 66-63. As this is being written, Central is preparing for the District Tournament at Troy. The Bucs were seeded first in the pre-tourney drawings. The team broke the M. V. L. record for team scoring in a season with 496 points, and a single game school record of 88 points against Hughes. Many students are worthy of belonging to this society, but because of the limited percentage ofthe class as a total, only a few are so honored. To belong to this organization should be the goal of every student-and the only way to reach this goal is to keep our grades up, and to show character, leadership, and industry in every undertaking during the four years of your high school career. ' l , J-f Cast of Balcony Scene Cast of A Perfect Date SPEECH NIGHT The Fifth Annual Speech Night was presented in the Jean B. Elwell Auditorium on April 10, 1953. The Speech students under the direction of Richard E. Sultzbach, their teacher, staged three one-act plays, including two comedies and one of a more serious nature. Balcony Scene concerns a man who returns from the dead to witness his own funeral, and hears himself being ridiculed by his supposed friends and neighbors. A Perfect Date involves a lucky girl who holds the winning ticket which entitles her to a date with a handsome movie star. The play has plenty of humor and tense moments. ltchin to Get Hitched is the story of a fifteen year old hillbilly girl who wants to git hitched before she is considered an old maid. The entire hillbilly family gets involved in trying to get their girl a man. There were many humorous lines and loads of laughter in this one-act play. As an added attraction, Paul Fox delivered his prize winning l Speak for Democracy address. Maurice Carroll was the Master of Ceremonies, and the entire performance was enioyed by a large crowd who was well pleased. HN PHYSICAL EDUCATION NIGHT 4 The Boys' Physical Education Department of Central presented its annual show on March 28, in the Field House. Highlights of the program directed by Ross Bateson, phys- ed instructor, was a championship intramural basketball game between the White Soldiers and the Battling Troians. The White Soldiers won by a score of 46 to 36. Franklin Wall defeated John Walker in a heavyweight wrestling exhibition. Locke Glossner defeated Elwood Tobin in the rope-climbing contest, while Tobin beat Dick White in the foul shooting contest. Other activities on the program included a display by the varsity tum- bling team, relays, and rugged team games. l l s.ra wr a ., : , .wal GOLF TEAM Coach Walt Marshall, Dow Reichley, Dick Smith, Mike Ungard, Jim Reynolds, Bob Miller, Roger Filson, John Balmer. Coach Walt Marshall had another fine golf team this year. Although they only won four out of ten dual meets, they finished a strong second in the M.V.L. meet, and finished sixth in the District meet at Dayton. This is very good when you consider the tough opposition they met. Bob Miller, this year's captain, was runner-up medalist in the District and made a credible showing in the State Tournament at Columbus. Bob, Jim Reynolds, and Mike Ungard are the only graduating Seniors. Although they will be missed, the other boys are very capable in filling the vacant spots and will turn in another great team next year. The golf picture at Central is very bright for the next few years, as there is a Junior High team which can give the older boys quite a battle. F airmont Xenia Troy ...... Xenia Fairborn Xenia Fairmont Xenia Troy ...... This season was the first time in many years that Xenia Central has had a tennis team, and not too much could be expected. Although Xenia failed to win a match this year, they were champions in sportsmanship and spirit. The boys learned a great deal through their mistakes, and gained plenty of experience in the few matches they played. Next year Coach Patterson's four letterrnen will return along with some very good prospects from the Freshman class. With more matches and more experience, with plenty of hard work, Xenia should be turning out some excellent tennis teams in the coming years. BASEBALL TEAM First row: Bill Wynn, Manager. Second row: Carl Archer, Larry Ellsberry, Tom Merriman, Pete Combs, Jerry Huth. Third row: Richard Gifford, Lee Durbin, Phil Anderson, Bob Chapman, Phil Purdom, Lowell Brownell. Fourth row: Taso Dontchos, Carl Pepple, Don Link, Brook Seall, Fred Patterson, Coach John Donaldson. Absent: Burt Kidd. The Buc Baseball team clidn't fare so well this year winning only one out of ten games. But this record doesn't speak for itself. Xenia is in the rebuilding stage and this is Coach D'onaldson's first year. The team is composed mostly of Sophomores and Juniors who have acquired plenty of experience through hard work and scrappiness. The highlights of the past season were the two games played between Central and Beavercreek, who eventually became State Class B Champions. The Bucs only lost to the Beavers by scores of i to 0, and TO to 7. This alone is enough to encourage Xenia for greater heights next year. After eleven years, a Miami Valley League Track Championship was finally won by Xenia Central. Last year the Buc trackmen lost the championship by a more one-half point to Greenville. This year the Buc cindermen won by more than twenty points over their closest rival, Fairmont, A Xenia Central finished in fourth place in the highly regarded Springfield Relays and fourteenth in the Ohio Wesleyan Relays. Some of the best teams in the state competed in these meets. New school records were set in the discus, high iump, pole vault, high and low hurdles. Ted Detty set a new MVL and school record in the low hurdles. Locke Glossner finished third in the mile relay at the District meet in Dayton, and twelfth in the State meet at Columbus. Although most of this year's point-getters were Seniors, next year should be par- ticularly interesting because ofthe capability of the underclassmen. Coach Bateson and Wilson deserve credit for developing a fine championship team. They put in long hours with the boys after school trying to help them in any way they could.
