Blend priest with master gardener, classical scholar with guppiphileg combine a carefree soul with a strong sense of purpose, a gruff manner with a kindly concern, and you have begun to describe Reverend William Perboyle Hetherington, S.J. For over a generation now, Xavier stu- dents have benefitted from their contact with this dedicated teacher and exponent of sound liberal education. Already an accomplished scholar when he finished his doctoral studies at the University of Toronto, Father Hetherington applied his abilities as a classicist and teacher here at Xavier. For more than twenty-five years since that time, he has been drawing upon his familiarity with an- cient Western culture to give his students deep insights into the Greek and Roman masters. Father's dedication to breadth and excellence in education is reflected in many ways, but most especially in his work with the Honors Bachelor of Arts program. Under his guidance since its inception twenty years ago, this program has been successful in turning out liberally educated men who have gone on to pursue careers in many fields. To this whole process, the contribution of Father Hetherington has been tremendous. For the benefits he has conferred for so long upon so many, we of the IVIUSKETEER salute this priest, scholar, and educator par excellence. 49 Faculty Accounting JOSEPH S. SCHUTZNIAN JACOB W. Alpha Si ma Nu Xavier's chapter of Alpha Sigma Nu, the National Jesuit Honor Fraternity, is composed of Juniors and Seniors who have demonstrated outstanding scholarship, loyalty, and serv- ice to the University. While primarily an honorary society, Al- pha Sigma Nu also provides certain practical services to Xav- ier. The most important of these is an annual report on the university submitted by the members to Father O'Connor. Also, each year the fraternity selects a teacher of the year, provides the panel for Xavier's Forum Series, and awards a gold key to an outstanding freshman or sophomore theology student. Membership in Alpha Sigma Nu is, indeed, the highest student honor offered by the university community. 92 Physics Club STANDING: Dick Toohey, John Deitz, Chuck Gulley, Mick DeGuire, Fr. A line of life insurance and annuity contracts second to none in quality-modern, liberal, flexible . . . geared solely to the needs of policyholders and beneficiaries. LOW COST is another. Annual policy dividends in effect reduce annual premiums - and CML's traditionally higher dividends mean lower cost. SPECIALIZATION is still another. CML is one of the very few major companies in the world concentrating exclusively on individual-policy life insurance . . . the result being superiority in its field. Whether you are looking for life insurance or a life insurance career, it will pay you to look first to Connecticut Mutual Life-the 'Blue Chip' Company. JAMES H. WIRTH 1007 PROVIDENT TOWER TELEPHONE: Q513J 721-8111 STRENGTH AND EXPERIENCE are two more factors. Founded in 1846, CML now services more than S7,500,000,000 of life insurance in individual policies backed by S2,400,000,000 of assets. AGENT SERVICE is most important of all. CML is Blue Chip because of its highlyetrained representatives in 300 cities coast to coast. The CML Blue Chip lapel but- ton is the symbol of life underwriters whose workin the final analysis is service - professional service of the caliber successful men expect to receive from other successful men.
