Each of us came, bowed under our own private pack of unfounded prejudices and un- faced fears. We cherished these like household gods, for they were our own, safely tucked away to be invoked or placated as the amophous breeze of our own personal whimsy should blow. But the ideal of maturity that Xavier attempted to exemplify for us did not allow of such childish superstitions. Like the shades desiring to cross the Styx, we had to leave that somewhat un- wieldy burden of personal baubles on the farther shore. Pride, envy, impetu- ousness, all were to be deposited, for desiring to become men, we had to put away the things of a child. Only that one possession within us which was really valuable could we carry over with us: the desire to be men at whatever per- sonal cost.
