The sacrifices which are made are repaid in full bv the many graces bestowed upon them. The habits formed bv the members of the Guard of Honor will certainly effect all the other activities of their lives. Spiritual growth at Xavier is a highly stressed product. The cadet develops his mastery of Latin and Math.. and also gains precision on the drill field, but he must remember that his 111ost important growth exists before the ey es of Cod. Therefore. every Friday morning. the cadets file down the middle aisle in the lvpper Church in their blue uniforms. a most impressive scene. These students attend Mass and receive Holv Communion to do homage to God in the Blessed Sacrament. Tops Anywhere Bugle Corps For manv years. the Bugle Corps has thrilled the public as well as the cadets With their exciting half time exhibitions at the football games. This year was no exception. together with the Color Guard the Bugle Corps proved to be well received by its audiences. The general appearance of the Bugle Corps was improved by re- placing the worn brass bugles with new chrome pieces. The music of the corps was brought up to date by inserting some new selections and by taking out many often heard marches. The Bugle Corps was successfully commanded by Cadet Major Lou Calasso. Mr. Reilly SJ., the moderator, proved to be very helpful in aiding the corps behind the scenes and was partly responsible for the acquiring of the new instruments. All in all, the Bugle Corps did its best to see that the Regiment had the best possible accompaniment in its many appearances. Beeb . . Beeb . . Beeb . . Such was the motto Father Matthews established for Xavier's Press Club. And such is the work it does. Students, especially underelassmen, wonder about the Clulfs existance because they never see the Club making any display of itself. Rather, the small group works lwehincl the scenes to fulfill its purpose-to publicize, not to be publicized. This year the Club once again succeerlecl in getting Xavier in many newspapers and even on television. The moderator was Mr. Butler, SJ., and the senior officers were ,lim Riordan and Juvenal Marchisio. Where's my trot? Gree lub Is Greek dormant? No, not as much as non-Hellenics may think. Directed by Mr. Brown, SJ.. a group from the Greek course wakes it from slumber every Friday afternoon. ln these periods, Socrates comes to life in Plato's dialogues. Obstruse queries are also proposed by characters in the dialogue which are concurred with or disagreed upon by the mem- bers. Sometimes after a discussion the group arrives at an answer which does not conform to Socratesis conclusions. A Greek play at Hunter College is also on the agenda. Latin Sight The men of Latin Sight seek further bene- fit and enjoyment from the Latin classics. Directed by Fr. Jones SJ., for the last five years, they study passages from Caesar, Cic- ero, and Virgil with the final outcome of the mastery and appreciation of the language that once ruled the world. Their efforts are also directed towards the annual spring Latin Sight competitions. More Creek? Kibilzing? orts CARDINAL HAYES The Hayes game proved disasterous as Xavier never got started against a below-par Hayes team. The Kaydets pushed the panic button, and before they realized it, the game ended with the score 34-0 in favor of the Cardinals. Outstanding for the Xavier 11 were Dan Cronin and Mike Coyle. 4.' ' QL . ST. CECELIA To redeem themselves for the crushing defeats, the Cadets traveled over to Englewood to meet the always strong Saints. The Maroon and Blue were hell-bent for victory, and turned a close game into a rout as Mike Goodwin put on a terrific show and scord three T.D.is. The initial Xavier T.D. was on a 40 yard pass play, Maloney to Brandt. Dick Maloney uncorked a new weapon in the Xavier machine, as he filled the air with footballs. He passed to Mike Goodwin for the linal T.D. How- ever, Xavier suffered a loss as star guard Bob For- lizzo injured his elbow. The Kaydets were on the march. DON BOSCO Under their new coach Lou Scarzello. Xavier's cadets opened up their 59 season with a smashing 37-13 victory over Don Bosco of Ramsey. From the opening kickoff, the Xavier 11 ran off with the cake. A new backfield sensation. Mike Goodwin. scored two T.D.'s in his varsity debut. Mike Coyle. Mike Dowd, Don Shara, and Bob Galliger added singles. This was the first time the Xavier fans had a chance to sing the school song proudly at a foot- ball game in 2 years. It looked like good times were coming to Xavier. BROOKLYN PREP With many key players out with injuries, the Xavier team dropped another to Brooklyn Prep, 26-0. The game was closer than the score indicated. as the score at the end of the half was only 8-0 But Bob Forlizzo was the only Xavier man who showed any sign of spirit that day as he played a great game on defense. It looked to the fans as if the team was bogging down in the mud. af, 1 -v M. -L. Xavier was a three T.D. underdog and pulled the upset of the year by trouncing St. ,lohn's 26-14-. Don Shara finally got rolling and bucked the heavier St John's line for almost 200 yards. He scored three T.D.'s. The standout Xavier defensive line gang tackled all over the field and held the vaunted to next to nothing. The turning point of the game came when the i'Goal line stand crew. led by Co-Captain Gordon Murphy, held the lndians for five downs on the 1 yard line. Not to be outdone by their de- fensive bretheren. the offensive line, led by Co- Captain Dennis Connolly. opened gapping holes for Don Shara. This game put joy in the hearts of Xavier alumni as the Kaydets passed the mid-point of the season with a 3-2 mark. ST. MARY'S OF RUTHERFORD Full of confidence and ready for an easy game the Kaydets again traveled to Jersey to face a new opponent. Saint Marys of Rutherford. Xavier got quite a surprise as the Jersey ll proved to be a rough bunch. The only Xavier score came on a two yard plunge by Jim Ryan. Although Xavier com- pletely outplayed Saint Marys by keeping them within their own 30 yard line for the entire second half and had thrce good chances to score. the game ended as a stale-mate and also as a loss to our team as Don Shara was injured. If fwaag. , .,,-4 N.Y.M.A. As the blue clad corps of cadets marched brisk- ly onto the field, the stands roared: and they roared even more as the Kaydets came from behind to overpower a larger New York Military team. After being surprised by an early touchdown. the cadets bounced back as Dennis Connolly snared a Maloney pass in the end zone to put the Maroon and Blue within striking distance. Spurred on the team drove inside the 20 and Big Mike Coyle made a diving catch for the second T.D. For the remainder of the game, the strong Xavier defense proved too much for their opponents as they pushed them all over the field. but failed to register another score. Outstanding in Xavit-r's fourth victory were Connolly, and Lavalle on offense, and Mike Burns on defense. FORDHAM As Thinksgiving Day rolled around. the NMa- roon Warriorsw went hunting for the Rams. But as the gun ended the game. the Kaydets were on the short end of a 7-6 score. We deserved to win, but the fates were against us. The Xavier eleven shone brilliantly for all but one brief minute in the second quarter. when a ramlet back raced into paydirt and put them into the lead 7-0. Xavier fought back and Don Shara crashed over to make the score T-6. The Xavier defense was superb as the stalwarts of the line. Lavalle and Lanzillo, and the backs. Keating and Cronin, stopped the Fordham backs in their tracks. Xavier had a chance to cop the game in the first seconds but the air attack failed and the team ended the season with a respectable 4-3-1 record.
