Here, on a secluded mountaintop, far from the cares and troubles of Xavier, rests Gonzaga, the first Jesuit retreat house for youth in the United States. For the past several years this has been the setting for the closed retreats. From the explanation of the retreat on the first day to Benediction and the Papal Blessing on the fourth day, there is only one rue for a good retreat, silence. There are only two people making the re- treat the senior and Christ. The others in the room are miles away from his mind. Here thoughts of New York and Sixteenth Street seem out of place. Al- though it is three days of hard work, no one will deny that it was three of the happiest and most prayerful days of his life. ,as-, . This year it has again proven itself more than worthy of this reputation at its parades, reviews and Church Parades. From T907 to 1958 it has progressed from a battalion to a regiment and from a little known unit to New York City's constant winner of the cov- eted Red Star award. There has been marked improvement in the Regiment in the last two years due to the Officers' Candidate School. The potential officers put in two hard weeks in which they do more work than they have done in their previous three years at Xavier. As a result, this regiment is better than any other seen at Xavier. Colonel Manuel Yvars. On this day the traditional Solemn High Mass of the Holy Ghost was offered, after which, the investing of the Colonel and Lt. Colonel took place. They were escorted up to the altar by an honor guard to receive their swords during the ceremony. Following this presentation the Colonel rededicated the Regiment to the Blessed Virgin Mary. During this year, Colonel McNulty as chief executive officer, has proven his leadership qualities and has made the Regiment of Our Lady the best yet. ,Q-Q SC J Saluting The Regimental Commander. Birbiglia's Boys The X Squad Through the years, tradition has decreed that the X Squad should not only represent, but also show the precision and snap of a model Xavier unit. This year's Squad did not detract from the reputation of former Squads, but enhanced it by its famed exhibitions throughout the year. Under the command of Moior Nicholas Testa, who was ably assisted by lst Lieutenant Michael Benedetto, the Squad demonstrated its ability in the field of precision drill at both military reviews, on the football field at St. Peter's, and at Ford- ham and in competition with college drill teams. Lest anyone forget, this precision is not achieved overnight, it is well to bear in mind the numerous hours these men have spent in the armory drilling. We give them thanks for the honors they have heaped on Xavier in all their actions. 111 ll lt X 9. I 'Tk Fx-N E so x Q g v lil 1 . . Q mf .J .. ' .Ji- X .agyglff 'Kxxg . - fp 5 t H F f' -f'. Sparked by the Co-Captains, John Donohue, a specatular line-crashing center, and a terrific guard, Angelo Gambino, the team completed a very successful season with a record of three wins and one loss. Under the guiding eye of Mr. Louis Scarzello, the J.V. easily stopped St. John's Q25-61. Then they trounced our Bronx rivals from Cardinal Hayes U8-6j. Among Xavier's cheerleaders are: Pete O'Brien, Tom Wolek, Bob Finnegan, Andrew Hargan, and Pete Del Boca. Xavier has pulled out of many a tough game with the support of the cheerleaders and crowds. Despite much ridicule of co-ed schools, the cheerleaders keep cheer- ing the team onward to victory. Although Xavier is losing four of these cheerleaders, it has hopes of seeing more boys as cheerleaders and cheer the teams all the way to victory and glory. v0 'b Fordham had a little rum. .
