The seniors have known two prefects, Father Lehmkuhl and Father McDon- ough. Each has held an oHice deep in responsibility and shallow in reward. It is to these two men that the Class of 1957 gives inadequate, but honest thanks for what they have done for us. To them we dedicate this yearbook. facult fg- n X I I I 1 'ff i . . - . It is, on the other hand impos- sible, to anyone other than a graduate, to recall his impressions of his last day at Xavier. And the difference in the two impressions serves in a remarkable way to illustrate the effect that this school will have on any person who oncc walks through the doors as a student. There is a difference most obviously of four years of growth. in every sense of the word. Age- wise. we are four years older. Scholastically. we can be from three to seven or eight years older. Socially. we have attained several years, growth. But years are a strange and fickle meas- ure of growth. ln how many other ways have we grown? ln how many ways that resist and repudiate measurement have we advanced? How many decisions have we made that will affect us when time is no longer the governor and the yardstick of menis growth? It is impossible to come out of high school unchanged. There are some who try, but the four years which we have just completed have had an eminent part in the eternal formation of two hundred souls. Several days ago, for the last time. we stepped from various subways and buses, in the blue uniform we have worn at Xavier. Vfe have been doing the same for the past four years. And when we look ahead, as we eventually must, and anticipate fruitful tomorrows, we are constrained to take a last look behind us, and we in some way take note of that last bus or train ride. comparing it to one taken when we first entered the school. We have been eager to graduate. To deny that. would be to deny all the ideals and ambitions towards which we have been working. But there are things which we shall miss. Not to admit the thrill and pride of marching is to be false to ourselves. Wle have known the power and confidence of commmand, and have emerged the better for it. We have realized here, perhaps for the first time, that there are few worthwhile qualities which come unpriced. We have expe- rienced. in a real and moving way, the glory and privilege of being Catholic: we have heard men speak in obvious words, of the unity of man, and have seen the powerful unifying force of the Church of Christ. We come out of Xavier better lnen for the opportunity we have enjoyed. We can. and certainly will be heard to remark about the discipline, or about this teacher or that. but we will forever realize the part which Xavier has taken in the training of leaders for the future, and Catholic citizens for eternity. l l - .r . The Regiment There is no activity more deeply a part of Xavier's life than the Regiment of Our Lady. More naturally and lavishly steeped in tradition than any other part of Xavier, the Regiment, this year commanded by Thomas Donnelly and Ruben Cuhero, continues to pre-empt the place of deepest pride in the hearts of alumni, parents and students. 7 Spirit is high, indeed, as we march up Fifth Avenue, color flying, guidons high, proud, be- fore the entire city of New York, of our school. For years the graduates will remember the command 'LPass in Revieww, and with lasting loyalty will see the blue line of cadets marching, in the last evening parade, from the green field at Fordham. Senior Retreat Three carefree days of quiet relaxation in the country were usually anticipated by the mem- bers of a class about to go on retreat to Gon- zaga at Monroe, N. Y. Quiet days they certainly were, but the other part of the picture of a carefree and reckless rest had been somewhat distorted. Freed from the burdens of those un- necessary obligations which the city puts on its inhabitants, retreatants found themselves fac- ing other problems, more pressing in many cases, in every case more important. Retreat is an ineommunicable experience, and the seniors hope that next year's class may profit as deeply from such an opportunity. Studying contemplation. nr-f' Thoughtful labor. A most impressive scene for onlookers is the Friday K. B. S. Mass, since all are in blue uniform, and in a most apt knightly fashion, all proceed in column to the alter. Students grown to adult- hood will look upon this activity as the one most fundamental and important to Xavieifs training of a man worthy of Heaven, The habit of frequent com- munion will prove for these, Christis Knights, the most helpful and satisfying result of their education. Without their inces- X sant help our team could never have been the team it was. This year's squad sported sixteen seniors. Sev- eral of them have made city all-star teams and I received various coveted awards-namely Randy I Cubero, Biff Flanigan, John Stone, .loe Greaney, Jerry Modolo, and Al Sawicki. I W7e, at Xavier, and especially the Class of '57, l U are proud to have had such a team represent us. 156 Stone goes over for another Xavier T.D. CARDIN AL HAYES An opening day crowd of 4000 watched Xavier's ground attack defeat Cardinal Hayes, 33-7. Hank Sgrosso, taking over as first string quarterback, proved his adeptness by calling a variety of play which baflied the Hayes defense. The Kaydcts scored five touchdowns via Stone for two, Zeccola, Creaney, and Healy. Tighe converted three out of the five times. Our charging line, headed hy Co-Captains Cuhero and Flanigan, proved detrimental to the Hayes hacks. BROOKLYN PREP The Kaydet eleven won its second game of the season by hlanking Brooklyn Prep, 32-0. The contest was plagued by penalties and fumbles. The highlights of the game were Zeccola's 80- yard breakaway to the end zone, and Stone's 60- yard dash on an interception. The 16111 Streeters managed to rack up another five touchdowns lo their record--scored hy Greaney l2b, Zeccola, Healy and Kehoe. The coveted Rectorls Trophy, awarded to the hest player in the game, went lo Joe Creaney. Zeke goes around end. ST.JOHNG The Kaydets added St. .lohn's to their three game winning streak by defeating the Redmeu at Randall,s Island by a score of 14-0. The first half was comparatively uneventful as both teams exchanged numerous punts. The second half continued much the same as the first, but both Stone and Healy scored for Xavier. Wihen both PAT's were made, the depressed St. John eleven never threatened in the scoring column. The signal whistle halted another Xavier drive with the score 14-0. The cadets suffered their first defeat of the season losing to Iona bv one point, 13-12. It was a bitter pill to swallow for the high-spirited team. Iona began the upset on their first play from scrimmage when Failla broke away for an 85-yard touchdown run. The hall continuously saw ,M .-t if '4 IONA Hold onto it Zeke! changed hands until late in the second period when Joe Greaney sprinted 35 yards down the right side for Xavier,s first score. Swimming Swimming is a refreshing and practical sport. Almost everyone knows the enjoyment of a dip in the ocean or in a neighborhood pool. But for members of the swimming team, enjoyment is coupled with hard practice for the betterment of Xavier's swimming reputation. Reintroduced at Xavier in 1954, the swim- ming team has made swift and steady progress in the last three years. Coached by Mr. Walter Mullen, the team, though deleted by the gradu- ation last year of several specialty swimmers, has this year produced capable back and breast strokers for a number of swim meets. Sparked by Captains Bob Devine and Don Gunther, and managed by Bill Hill, the team spent long and difficult hours perfecting style and increasing speed. f v I . . . must como down 'gifim an-...w-A Whatever goes up . . .
