What can bc thc reward of these thirteen dedicated mcn who have spent over a decade in training men ol Xavier? Fame and fortune are hardly tltoir compensation, but rather devotion and un- cxpressable gratitude on the part of each boy marks their prize. The years roll on and more students are prepared to face the troublcs and problems ofthe world, both in a spiritual capacity and on an intellectual basis. The nights of seemingly outrageous homework assignments and evcn the tours in Guard House go only towards their plans for our personal gain and ncccssary training. ln the years to come, we shall loolr back with thankfulness and cherish their memory. There was, however, one distinction that marked these boys. They were the Class of '56. The influence of the Class of '56 was soon felt throughout the Freshman and J. V. sports, particularly basketball. Scholastically, the freshmen led the school both in the number of honors and in the results of the Province Exams. The freshman class also had a large number of its members regularly attending the K. B. S. and Guard of Honor masses. On into second year continued the class as the tradition and training of Xavier became an indelible part of each student. Photographers and writers soon came forth and lent their talents to the paper, the magazine and the yearbook. Swimming, debating, and football, all felt the new surge, both in favorable decisions against their opponents and morale within. ln reaching third year, '56 proved no less ambitious and effective in both sports and studies. The re-commencement of the school year saw a change in the office of the headmaster, Fr. McGrail, S.J., taking the place of Fr. Fagan, S.J. At this stage of progress, '56 was literally chafing at the bit as the names of its members began to become commonplace in the school headlines. Ballplayers, writers, debaters, riflemen and students in general outdid themselves, and eagerly awaited the arrival of Senior Year, their year of rule. Minds impatiently thought of the class rings, the Military Ball, the rank and the recognition which accompanies the success- ful attainment of Senior Year. Towards the end of our Junior year, two of the '56 headliners received command of the next season's football team. It was not, however, the will of God for one part of this duet to continue on in his activities. During the summer, while working at Bear Mountain, Bob Keating was called to his eternal home. Those of us who knew Bob well, or even slightly, realized his potentials. His memory will surely accompany us long after our diplomas have been mounted upon the wall. For the fourth time, '56 enters the threshold of Xavier, only this time to be the Senior class. Years of work and anticipation yielded rewards in buttons, stripes and acknowledgment. Three days of conferences, meditations and spiritual reading marked the Senior Retreat at Gonzaga. Before reaching it, the outlook may have seemed uninteresting. But those days that followed proved to be among the most rewarding and well spent days in our years at Xavier. The months that followed seemed to fly by for the seniors. Thanksgiving Day, the Christmas Review, a new semester, May Day, exams, all swiftly came and went. Then on June l7, we, more than 200 members of the Class of '56, ended our four years as students of Xavier by mounting the stage of the Hotel Astor's Grand Ball- room and rec ' ' our hard-earned diplomas. All in al ur very profitable years, perhaps we are safe in adding, It's been fu , 24 T? V' l 6 Senior Sodalit HE Sodality built its inner structure by ap- pointing an Apostolic, a Social, a Sanctuary and a Rules Committee. From this base, it reached its influence into the Sodality Council, a group organized to direct school wide Sodality activity. With the moderator explaining Sodality themes to the committee members, the members then instructing the entire Senior Sodality and finally each Senior passing this direction on to his Freshman Sodalists, the complete cycle was set in motion. With this inner structure functioning, the Sen- iors then spread their influence to social areas outside the school. Talks at Communion break- fasts, meetings with other Sodalities and attend- ance at the Detroit T. S. S. A. widened the Apostolic circle. The Guidon, a Sodality news- paper, reached the alumni Sodalists as well as those in the school. The climax of the year came at lnisfada when the Seniors made their solemn Act of Consecra- tion for one year, preparing to carry on a Sodality way of life in college. The omcers were: Prefect, Paul Marto, Vice- Prefect, Peter Deversg Secretary, Gene Flannery, Treasurer, Nick D'Agostino. The sodality tried to give its members a deeper realization of the nearness of Our Lord and His sacrifice with regard to each individual. By his talks the mod- erator tried to make each member lead a more Christ-like life. A group of Sodalists also at- tended the day of recollection ot lnisfada. The outside work of the Junior Sodality was quite successful. Forums were run on Education in the non-Catholic college and The Legion of Decency, two important subiects at this time. A A Sophomore Sodallt N the apostolic sphere, sophomore sodalists visited various places of charity such as the Dominican Sisters' Orphanage at Blauvelt, New York. They have also sponsored the weekly Sta- tions of the Cross during the holy season of Lent. You may also have seen various members around the school instructing young men to be altar boys. They also conducted the well-enioyed Tropical Paradise that was held on May 12, under the direction of Frank Lee. Mainly, however, they have brought them- selves and others closer to Christ through the Immaculate Heart of His Blessed Mother. Freshman Sodallt HE Freshman Sodality, under the direction of Fr. O'Donovan, S.J., has spent the year in learning what the Sodality is and what its Way of Life means. Though only Probationists, they have thrown themselves wholeheartedly into the activities of the Sodality with all the zeal and enthusiasm of full-fledged Sodalists. For most ot the year the Sodality was sparked by Class Representatives, After proving their worth the following men were chosen as Ofticers: Prefect, Daniel Gatti, Assistant Prefect, Francis McDermottg Secretary, James Riordang Corre- sponding Secretary, Robert Keating, and Treas- urer, Peter Lavalle. FRESHMAN SODALITY, Thursday morning meeting with Fr. O'Donovan, S.J., in Larkin Hall. 9 Guard of Honor ACH May Xavier takes part in devotions to honor Our Lord and His Blessed Mother. Among these ceremonies there is one, simple yet impressive, which puts the finishing touch to a year of self-sacrifice and devotion. This is the pledge of dedication to the ideals of the Guard of Honor. In fulfilling the requirements tor this society of Mass and Communion three times a week, the men of the Guard of Honor can be seen every Wednesday morning, faithfully attending Mass in the now redecorated and recently renamed Larkin Hall. K. B. S. AVlER growth is a highly stressed product. The cadet develops his mastery of the Latin verb in the classroom, the flank movements in military drill, and the ability to sink a foul shot on the athletic court, but his most important growth exists before the eyes of God. The Mass of The Knights of the Blessed Sacrament at Xavier plays a large role in the growth of his soul. As its name implies the Mass develops a young Christian into something stronger, into a knight for Christ. lt is on Friday mornings that these Christian youths and knights assemble to pledge their allegiance to the king who directs their spiritual growth. The development of the soul, here, has an ideal environment. lt is among souls of the same state of life, with the same regulations and duties. This uniformity aids its growth. 0 ,lk if ' 1 Af: H A ' QQ 1 .-Z ki at ,, S wwf M ' H X , 556 A 73 fag' 2, .Z X 3, K '55 34 432+ L' W mf V W? 3 .wif ,Y 275' -4, E His vgzepfi 3 iswiiif, qw 1, r a MN.g?, M 331,154 A A . ff' 1, 'G f 'QF off Front raw-Deppisch, Boes, Fr. Scarcely has one issue been distributed, before co-editors Frank Boes and Gerry Seitz can be seen conferring with their moderator, Fr. The avier HlS year the Xavier has again appeared before the faculty, students and friends of Xavier, The task of rolling the magazines oft the press was execu'ed by co-editors Bob Fitz- patrick and Paul Kusbach, together with Bob Geoghan and Doug Logue, associate editors. Under the guidance of Mr. Green, S.J., the work ci organizing the magazine was carried out very smoothly, Much effort went into bringing about a few new changes in the Xavier policy. For instance, students are encouraged to write essays by being placed in competition with their fellow class- mates. With this incentive in mind, their essay may be the one chosen to appear in the Xavier. Much credii is also clue the entire staff for their fine cooperation, Many hours of work were put in by these men to uphold the standard of the Xavier, Evening Parade N a secluded ofhce hidden away in a little- known region of the school, the members of the yearbook stat? prepare each year's edition ot the EVENING PARADE. Long, tiring hours and late departures from school characterize a nor- mal day's work for them, The difterent workers, when not writing or rewriting are out among the student body gathering important material on various activities and individuals. Early in the year, the foundation is set for the annual edition and ideas begin to fall into a mold. From this time on to the final rush to meet the printer's deadline the days are filled with ideas, writing, typing, gathering of pictures and in general, work of the entire staft. Finally, a few days before the summer holi- days, the product of these long hours of prepa- ration is ready for distribution, the new edition ot the EVENING PARADE. Fred Adame and Steve Carney, Press Club EEPING Xavier in the publicity spotlight is an important iob and it is this job which is the particular occupation of the Press Club. Throughout the year this behind-the-scenes or- ganization has lived up to its motto, Tell us and we'll tell the world. During the football season, for instance, telephone lines were kept iingling with reports of scores, touchdowns and lineups to all the New York papers. Spots appeared in these papers, the club clipped and saved them and clipping after clipping was added to the volumes of scrapbooks which tell of Xavier in the news. The football season was merely a mirror of the whole year's activities. When Father Matthews, the club moderator, was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital in January, the organization thought that its spark and guiding light had been extinguished. But they were wrong. From a hospital bed and a room full of visitors, Father Matthews managed to keep that spark glowing, The Press Club operated at full speed. Doug Logue and Dan Pieroni. Sons of Xavier HE purpose of the Sons of Xavier is to pro- vide a means of contact for the alumni of Xavier. This year the SOX continued the publi- cation of a small newspaper called the l'Alum- news which gave news of fellow graduates to the alumni. The SOX also runs the annual Smoker on Thanksgiving Eve and the Communion break- tast held during Lent, in order to bring together as many alumni as possible. An overall season record of 14 wins against 4 losses was topped only by the tact that Xavier went undefeated in 10 home games for the first time in their court history. The season came to a finale with the initial appearance of the ma- roon and blue in the city championship playoff. Success was due to balance. The first seven men were potential scorers, and each was the individual pace setter in at least one game. However, co-captain Pat Kelly led with a 317 point total and a 16.2 average. His rebounding was also tops. Lou Turco, the year's dark horse, ran a close second with a 15.1 average and 242 total. Lou's fiery spirit helped gain him post season honors along with Kelly. Pete Brunone's 13.4 average and 227 total was good for the third spot while Vinnie Alvino's playmaking was second to none. Dee Maynard, the only Junior starter was an important cog in Tony Karpowicz's machine as was Jim Hanley and Ray Clyne. These were ably backed by a strong bench, led by John Casko. Baseball URING the latter part of the year when spring fever is in the air, the clatter of spikes ring out the beginning of the baseball season. In this year's edition of that abbrevi- ated high school sport, Coach Tony Karpowicz retained a solid nucleus from the '55 infield. Going around the horn were Seniors Duncan Barry, Jim Stark, John Casko, and Bob Thomas, backed up by subs Bob Devine, Bill Hagany and others. Patrolling the outfield pastures were Andy Mulrain, Fred Pilanski and Lou Turco, aided by fly-chasers Jerry Modolo, Timmy Tighe and Ray Slevin. Rounding the starting team and wearing the catcher's tool was Joe Franchina. Composing the Xavier mound corps were vet- erans Eddie Cornelia and Dee Maynard, and newcomers Paul Marto, Bill Hogan and John Kalben. Starting a fast fielding but weak hitting nine, Xavier nevertheless shook up many of the league's top contenders during their eighteen- game schedule, beating their arch-rivals Ford- ham Prep in their first start. 4 v -4 f mill? l' Indeed, Joe is a Many Splendored Thing. 6 3 44 .xt g J.
